Wild Card (Elite Ops #1)
by
Lora Leigh
It was supposed to be simple. All Navy SEAL Nathan Malone had to do was rescue three young girls from a Colombia drug cartel, then allow himself to be captured just long enough to draw out a government spy. That was before his mission went disastrously wrong…and before his wife, Bella, was told that Nathan was never coming home.

This one is a keeper. One of those books that you can't stop reading and then find yourself sad as you approach the end because you don't want it to be over. WILD CARD is a beautiful romance with scorching hot love scenes, plenty of action and a sexy alpha male hero that literally jumps off the pages at you. Bound in leather chaps and just daring you to get on the back of his Harley. What an escape, I loved it...more

I'm not sure what it was about Lora Leigh's latest, "Wild Card", but something just didn't hit all my pleasure buttons with it. Maybe it was the hero's stubbornness that lasted just too long for me not to get irritated with it. Or maybe it was his push/pull tactics that drove me nuts...Either way, I just wasn't as thrilled with this book as I usually am with most everything Leigh writes.

Based on everything I'd heard about Lora Leigh's books, I started reading Wild Card with some caution. But I'd also heard that this book was very good and not too heavy on her usual "style", so I decided to give it a try. Well, I'm happy I did. :)
I loved the setting and the story. I was surprised by the identity of the villain who had been leaking all the info to the bad guys (I won't go into details here, for it would be a major spoiler) and I was literally sitting at the edge of my chair when...more

Wow, what a book! Imagine being a young wife and losing your husband. Then, six years later, a dark, powerful man comes into the life you've been barely living. You're feeling scared a guilty. As your confusion begins to clear, you realize that this sexy stranger is your dead husband.

What a ride! When I started this I was rolling my eyes: TWO prologues and several large leaps through time. But, I was riveted to the book from that point on. I had a lump in my throat at the PROLOGUE for crine out loud! The two main characters LOVED each other so deeply I felt it down to my toenails. They had a connection, a soul-deep connection that spanned miles and included shared dreams and horrors.

We start off this book with heartbreaking scenes of a couple madly in love and then ripped apart when a mission goes wrong; Bella is told that her husband, Nathan "wild card" Malone is dead.
Truthfully in the beginning this is what everyone believes until Nathan is rescued after 19 months of torture.
In the seedy hole where he was kept, drugged, abused, the only thing that kept Nathan from bowing down to the demands of his captors was his vows to his wife. But in the end, Nathan feels that he is n...more

I couldn't wait to read this book once I got started on Leigh's Tempting SEALS series...and it mostly lived up to my expectations.
I enjoyed the overall storyline...SEAL Nathan Malone spent 19 months tortured by a drug lord, and when he's finally free, he's so messed up he doesn't let his wife know that he's alive. Years pass, Nathan takes on the identity of Noah Blake and signs up with an private sector Elite Ops groups. Then he finds out his wife is in danger from a militia group and returns ho...more

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about a man who has hidden from his past and let his wife think he was dead, even if he felt that he couldn't give her what she needed. But Noah and his Bella were interesting, because while they both pined for their lost spouse, they both learned to grow and continue without each other. And coming back together really lead them to create some serious sparks. I loved Noah from before; his strength in the face of addiction was quite powerful. Bella's feistiness, and her...more

I wish I can say how much I loved this book and how much the characters made me root for them ... but...
I can't, plain and simple. I refuse to call Lora’s characters as the "Hero" and "Heroine" since they are anything but that.
"Wild Card" was one of the first books I read from Lora Leigh and I admitted that I was anticipating an actual love story between the characters since the back cover seemed so interesting. But no, all I got was a book that was 418 pages long and half of them...more

If you can't say anything else about Lora Leigh, you can at the very least acknowledge that she can write a hot and kinky scene as good as anyone. But be warned, she isn't into the vanilla and if you're looking for strait-laced 'nice' sex and love, don't even bother delving into her world. If you're okay with extreme, and I do really mean extreme, dirty talk and seriously hot sex, then you've found the right woman. There are also numerous elements of light (but incredibly hot) BDSM and mentions...more
There are only two series the prolific Lora Leigh writes I continue to follow: that being the Breeds and her Tempting SEALs series.
By far the Breeds are my favs, but the latest- and I believe the last Tempting SEALs team entry as well as the first in a band new one called Elite Ops, - reminded me so much of the Breeds, I enjoyed it much more than the previous entries.
Sure, there wasn't fated mating heat or animal "instincts" popping up everywhere, but the hero is uber alpha and that coupled with...more

Wild Card was certainly unlike any book I have ever read. Nathan Malone was a Navy SEAL who was captured and severely injured on an away mission. So severely injured in fact that his wife Bella was informed of his death and he took on a whole new face, identity and future…without her. With the bad guys closing in on his “wife”, in order to keep her safe he must re-enter her life as someone else and keep hi...more

This story has an interesting and a somewhat humorous storyline. Nathan left his home and wife for a mission. Sadly, he got caught and was brutally beaten. When he was rescued, his corpse was so destroyed and had to go under surgery in order for him to have a functional body. A few months later (and after tons of physical training) he was back on the field. Instead of flying back to his wifes arms, he continued to work for the army. Bella, thinking Nathan is dead, morns him for three years. Nath...more
Nathan Malone is a Navy SEAL. He is leaving his new wife, Sabella. Nathan’s mission was to rescues three girls from a Colombian drug cartel, uncover the mole, and get out. Instead Nathan is captured and almost every bone in his body is broken. Nathan is lucky to be alive. Nathan has a new identity…Noah Blake. Nathan is fine with never seeing his wife again but when he learns that Sabella is in trouble with the Black Collar Militia, he can not just stand by and do nothing. Only how long with Nath...more
Wow, so this was my first Lora Leigh book. It was a bit...raunchy. I was not prepared.
I really loved the story. It was gut wrenching at parts. There was a lot of emotional pain, and I felt it. There were parts that made my stomach clench and my chest tighten with the sadness Sabella felt. Regardless of Nathan/Noah's stubbornness he was pretty HOTT! I loved all that dark attitude and fierce protectiveness he felt for Sabella. Although I though some of the parts where he talked dirty to her had m...more

Let's sit down and talk about something for a minute. That one thing we all think about but don't really talk about. You know the one.
SEX.
I'm not going to get into the romance is porn for women discussion. Not gonna do it. But obviously, I'm a girl that likes a good romance. I love the snap and sizzle. The gutting heartbreaks. The push and pull between people falling and fighting. The eccentric families that always seem to surround them. In all its shapes and forms, I love a good love story. A...more

Nathan Malone was a Navy Seal, captured in a mission and tortured by 19 long month by his captures. He never broke for them. But 19 month in hell has a way of killing a man. When he was rescued Nathan Malone stopped existing and Noah Blake took his place. After long surgeries, painful recoveries and extensive training he became icy, deadly, a killing machine. Now the target were his wife and brother and he had to protect them, even if he had to kill to do so, no one was going to touch his family...more
Before I give a full review, I just wanted to put something out there. I'm sure many readers here do this, but just to be clear. I try to review each novel in the context of its genre, not as compared to all written word. When I review a Lora Leigh book, I'm comparing it to romance novels/romantic suspense, not say, historical fiction or horror. That would be comparing apples to oranges. Do all reviewers do this? I'm not sure. I've seen scathing reviews of books that reviewers clearly state are...more
This is the first time reading a Lora Leigh book outside The Breed series for me and I wasn't sure what to expect. The writing and the plot were very LL, which is good. The characters felt a little bit deeper to me than I'm used to seeing, but this book was longer than a typical Breed book so that, I think, accounts for it.

Four stars because, once I started reading, I literally couldn't put it down, and despite whatever plot or character flaws occur in a book, if it can hold my attention from beginning to end, then it's doing it's job.
Having said that, I found the explicit (and numerous) sex scenes rather tedious after a while. Yes, they're definitely hot, and leave zero to the imagination, but I personally don't need it all laid out on a plate for me, so to speak. Also - although it was only used once - I'm not a...more

I really enjoyed this story. The characters were likeable and Noah was sexy as all hell. NO really, I mean wrap him up and duct tape him to my bed sexy. There was a lot of hot sex and dirty talk which I like but others may find it a bit much. I haven't listened to many Lora Leigh books before but she's definitely on my watch list. The story moved along alright enough, but there were times when all the angst was just way too much. There are only so many crying jags I can feel compassion for befor...more

After reading the last word of this book and closing it's cover, I can honestly say that Lora Leigh has found a new fan. While not an easy read, it was emotionally gut-wrenching and the storyline drew me right into the middle of he emotional tug of war between Nathan/Noah and Sabella.

I have recently realized I like Odyssey’s type of story in my romance book. It’s the kind where the husband leaves the wife for a long period of time and comes back a different man. Another book, which I love, that goes by the same formula is The Ugly Duchess by Eloisa James. Wild Card is supposed to be same. That’s why I'm surprised that I just can’t click with this book. It’s supposed to be perfect. Hell, I think it’s perfect. (view spoiler)...more
Nathan/Noah and Sabella are overly deserving of a happily ever after. Lora Leigh makes them work for it in this book. Just as Nathan and Sabella are finding a rhythm in their marriage, Nathan dies. Actually, Sabella is told that Nathan is dead because for all intents and purposes, the man she knew as Nathan is gone. A darker, harsher Nathan, now going by Noah, emerges from his trials and tribulations to help protect Sabella from the scourge that is taking over his hometown. Noah does everything...more
Six years ago, Navy SEAL Nathan Malone died in military hospital after being tortured and disfigured by drug lord Diego Fuentes. In his place, Elite Ops Agent Noah Blake was born. Nathan left behind a family, including his young wife Sabella, who were told he died in combat rather than the truth – he came back from Columbia a physical mess and pumped full of whore’s dust, a drug that creates a crippling need for sex. So Noah has a new face and a new job as a special security agent – in exchange...more

“Oh, now my Erin, she'd smile down on me no matter where I walked." Grandpop smiled that little smile again. "But I'd be separated from her, and I'd feel that separation in my soul, you see?"
Nathan shook his head.
Grandpop sighed. "You have the Irish eyes, boy. One of these days, you'll see from eyes, not your own, feel with a heart outside your chest. Wild Irish eyes. Nathan. When you love, love well and love true, and take care, lad, because those Irish eyes are windows into not just your own soul, but the soul of the one you love."
