Okay, so I gave the book another shot, and I'm glad I did. This is probably one of a handful of books where that admirable effort actually made a difference. Despite myself, this book grew on me.

Readers of Nina Bangs' (and what an unfortunate choice of pseudonyms) other works will recognize her style in Eternal Pleasure, fast and flippant with no excess scenes or dialogue, but unlike Bangs' other novels, the Gods of Night are meant to be darker and troubled. After all, these are men imbued with...more Okay, so I gave the book another shot, and I'm glad I did. This is probably one of a handful of books where that admirable effort actually made a difference. Despite myself, this book grew on me.

Readers of Nina Bangs' (and what an unfortunate choice of pseudonyms) other works will recognize her style in Eternal Pleasure, fast and flippant with no excess scenes or dialogue, but unlike Bangs' other novels, the Gods of Night are meant to be darker and troubled. After all, these are men imbued with the souls of primitive, destructive beasts, creatures of nightmare, savage machines that don't belong in the world of men. The author certainly manages to capture that tension.

When we first meet our hero Ty (I bet you can't guess his other form-- the heroine does too), he bears a striking resemblance to our good friend The Caveman. (I'm paraphrasing, but "Me kill now," is a pretty close approximation to his first lines.) I had grave doubts here that were not immediately alleviated by Bangs' continually flip tone. Buffy was never my favorite TV character.

I wanted to stop here, but I took the chance. I continued, and I was rewarded. Some chapters in, we're introduced to another element of the story. We learn more about Ty, who is apparently more layered than he first seems. Now this feels more like a romance and less like a Nature special. It also helps that Bangs' world is peopled with lots of other interesting creatures and secondary characters for books to come, especially the oh, so mysterious and reputedly soulless leader Fin (Bangs, you tease).

Action: Good. There's enough fighting and fisticuffs to satisfy the bloodthirsty reader, but there is no horror-inspiring description of obscene violence, blood or gore. This is CBS violence, Moonlight rather than Supernatural. In this respect, Eternal Pleasure stays well within paranormal romance.

Romance: There are several, requisite near encounters before the final culmination full of tension. The actual bedroom scene is not as clean as a historical, but not as steamy and raw as a Larissa Ione, and taking a page from Romeo's book, the hero makes a rather unlikely declaration. Fortunately, we can move on to the real action immediately afterwards.

The ending was anti-climactic in failing to reveal an important event that had been alluded to for most of the book. It would also be nice to see a change of scenery now and again.

However, outside of that, I would recommend Eternal Pleasure as a good action paranormal with a couple in-lust (I'm hard pressed to believe the heroine's melodramatic vow of eternal love at the end-- perhaps if the book was longer) and some good twists, and also because dinosaurs are just cool. I was a little interested to see how Bangs would do with this book considering her Sparkle and Ganymede series is a little more lightheared.

The story line for this book is a group of 11 men who used to have the souls of different dinosaurs are brought forward to the present time to basically save the earth. Each man is given a name after their dinosaur. Sound hokey, but it really ends up working out.

Ty (t-rex) is the hero in this book and Kelly, his driver, is the female. What I liked most about...more

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Its hard for me to find a first book in a series that I really enjoyed, this one fits that bill and gave me more. I don’t find may heroine’s that I truly enjoy reading, but Kelly was wonderful. Kelly never new that things that goes bump in the night exist, until she gets a job as a driver. When she picked Ty up she knew something wasn’t right and she soon finds out how right she is about him, when she see him change into a T Rex (it gets really tense here). As Kelly looks at all the hot men she finds one that she cant keep away form that’s Ty, even though she knows he can take out a wolf pack in a heart beat, she cant stay away from his protectiveness of her. These too are really good together and they get into a lot of hairy situations that keeps you reading to find out what will happen next between them.

I really like Ty, he is one most like about hot and ready for any action. Now remember these men haven’t had any women around them for sixty- five million years, so you know what on each ones mind;). The more Ty is around Kelly the more he falls for her and the more he want to protect her from all dangers. But is Kelly the one woman that can love him enough to walk into the heart of the beast and claim a piece of his soul and become immortal and stay with him for eternity? Well you’ll have to read and find out the whole story.

I have a friend that wrote to Nina and asked her when the next books is due out and Nina says “around Dec.” so you wont have long to wait for book three.(less)

The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because I wanted more steamy scenes between Ty and Kelly. (What can I say! ;-) )

I just couldn't get into this author. The idea was interesting and original for sure but it was just poorly executed. I don't know if this was a bad edit job where too much was cut or if it was a writing deficiency. Either way, I was left feeling that the story was choppy and made huge leaps that made no sense. Felicia Day and Bonnie Burton, I love you and think you're wonderful people, but I don't think I can be part of your book club anymore. I know you said this book wasn't screened, but it was so awful in so many ways, I just don't even. A lot of people found this book so bad that it was funny, but I am not so amused. :/

First, the writing was terrible. There were so many fragmented subplots, thoughts, sentences, and characters that I wasn't sure what was going on at times, or who the main character actually was, or why I should care anyway. It was like the author couldn't decide on one thing (one plot, one set of characters, one set of immortal beings), and so she just went with all of them. Shapeshifting dinosaurs might sound cool and different at first, but when you get into vampires and werewolves and demons and sorcerers and the Mayan apocalypse you just sort of lose anything you had going for you.

Second, the love story. Ugggghhh SO BAD. So the main male interest was a Tyrannosaurus rex in his past life. That's pretty cool. He has no idea what it means to be human, which is understandable. But then he meets HER and everything becomes angst and unfamiliar emotions and love, and when they have sex -- no, sorry, MAKE LOVE -- the first time she SEES HIS SOUL (no, seriously, she sees it and describes it and takes some of it with her) and it's like... okay, really? Did I seriously just read that? I did, didn't I. Wow, that was so awful. The main female interest isn't really all that much better. This guy is totally weird but hot and she wants him and cares for him and gets angry at him for doing something dangerous like fighting (because, you know, he's not still part T rex or anything) and will sacrifice her mortality for him and then they get married and I still really cannot believe that.

I think my main problem is that I just found the love story sort of gross. I've read alpha male romances before, and while I didn't like them, they didn't leave this awful ickiness in my head. This whole romance was just icky. It was weird and cheesy and unbelievable and stupid and didn't really fit the plot (which plot?) and just blah.

Oh my God, this book was so bad. I mean, just...terrible, really. And yet, I wouldn't burn it in a fire. What I'm saying is that it's not in the so-bad-it's-good category, but it's definitely so-bad-it's-hilarious. It almost makes me rethink my one-star review, but I'd hate for someone to pick this up thinking it's in any way a quality read.

Bangs has offered up a unique concept - it's not every day you read about dinosaur warriors fighting immortal evil - and characters that had appeal. While some aspects are familiar in theme to Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series and others, I'm was thrilled to get away from the Greek pantheon which has proliferated into so many other series. I was charmed by the Eleven and amused by their soul nature. Other ancillary characters lacked a little depth, but there was a wide array of them introduced and they fleshed out the scenes nicely.

The problems I had with Eternal Pleasure weren't character-based, nor were they centered on the concept of the book. It wasn't even the plot itself, which I thought had some promise. Where this book broke down for me was the execution and delivery of the plot. There are lots and lots of paranormal romance series that are similarly themed (and I read most of them): a brotherhood of badasses fighting together against a seemingly unbeatable foe. Ward does it, Kenyon does it, Showalter, Adrian...and the list goes on. And on. It's a familiar and well-tread theme. Through them I've realized that the devil is in the details, and there just weren't many here - and those that were didn't make a lot of sense in this book.

I tend to visualize the worlds that authors create, the arc of their series, the plots of each book, and the characters that inhabit them all as deep, wide, dark lakes full of promising story in which I like to swim. In Eternal Pleasure, though, instead of been thrown deep into that story lake with the force and creativity of the exposition, narrative, and dialogue, it felt more like the author took a flat rock and skipped it across that glassy surface, and the book was the sum of the spots the rock touched as it danced across the top. I never felt submerged into the world, the plot, or the characters lives. Too many things went unexplained, or avoided, or danced around. Instead the focus was on the relationship between Ty and Kelly and a lot of repetition about Ty's struggle with his T-rex nature.

We're allowed to know that dino-boys aren't just dino-boys (that's probably a good thing, because...well...ew). Before that they were something else, and it's big and awful and crippling...but their memories have been wiped because of the trauma it would cause them or the distraction it would provide. That's convenient for a couple of reasons - not only to cue the dark, mysterious music and try to add a layer of threat and mystery (unsuccessfully), but also to provide danger for the women who love them, and who will have to enter their beast and join their soul to be their mates (apparently, verbal commitment and a ring just don't cut it with dinosaurs and PNR series with this sort of theme are all about the metaphysical connections). Unfortunately, all the potential for scary threat and "no human love can survive that" angst was ultimately unrealized when the story stone skipped its way across that part of the lake.

It was a problem that recurred throughout the book. Lots of teasers and hints and nudges towards a bigger picture than a bunch of dinosaurs stalking the night...lots of skips of that stone over what could have been a deep, dark, delightful lake of story...and no real moments of sinking in and getting any more than your toes wet. It was impossible for me to connect to the story or the characters more than superficially because of it, and in some places (most notably the scene where Neva disappears and the events that follow), make the characters concern even for each other seem false and unrealistic (hard to believe someone could be SO upset over a person's disappearance when they had only met that person once...in passing...and impossible to sustain belief in the bosom buddy attempt following it).

There's promise in the originality of the concept, there's comfort of familiarity in a favored theme, and there are characters and story I could care about...but if the next book doesn't do more diving than skipping, I think I'll be leaving the Gods of the Night shores.

4hrs into the book and I am enjoying the story, but the narrator SUCKS. All of her voices sound the exact same. I've had to relisten to about 25% of the first half again just to keep up with who is talking. There is no effort on her part. It's like someone at the recording studio said "Hey, we can't get Xe Sands or Tavia Gilbert to narrate, so let's grab Eunice from the lunch room and have her read it so we can meet our deadline." This was just okay to me. For one thing (and this isn't the deciding factor for me) there was only one sex scene! Not what I'm wanting when reading a smexy romance novel.

The real kicker for me is that the male character switches from violence-loving, mating-obsessed alpha male to sensitive human in no seconds flat and still the female character gets all huffy at him when his persona slips at any point. Congratulations to Nina Bangs for coming up with a completely new twist in the Paranormal genre. It´s always refreshing when that happens.
The book has gotten some raving reviews here on Goodreads. And it is good. Just not 4 or 5 stars good in my view.

There are some leap of faiths you have to take in the story and I´m not a fan of those. To me it feels that the author isn´t quite finished with his/her world building.

This book is definitely one of my new favorites. It is rare that I find a supernatural romance, a paranormal romance that fits my standards for books. There is actual PLOT to this story, there is something other than just "blah. blah. blah." hot sex scene here "blah. blah. blah." Seriously.

I casually referred to this book as the "dinosaur sex book" as I was reading it, and well, that description holds up. A former dinosaur soul is put into a human body to help save the end of the world in 2012. I KNOW. The heroine in this book is given very little to do except swoon over her dinosaur lover and be told that her flute playing can save the world (I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW). I'm going to be honest here, prior to reading this book I'd never really thought of dinosaurs as sexy. Big? Yes. Lumbering? Sometimes. Predatory? Absolutely. Sexy? Not so much. However, I can say that Nina Bangs has given me a whole new outlook on predatory dinosaur-souled men.

This was the alt-book in Vaginal Fantasy Hangout in September, and due to the rather unusual subject matter, I felt compelled to check it out. As the e-book is currently unavailable, I ended up paying 5 times the cost of the actual book to have it shipped from the US, but it did entertain me, so I guess I don't mind too much.

There's a lot of paranormal fantasy and romance out there featuring shapeshifters of various kinds. I suspect it's the most common trope after vampires. The hero in this book, is a slightly different sort of a shapeshifter, hence the lovely ladies of VFH's enthusiasm, and my needing to read the book. But what is it actually about, you ask.

Apparently there is a battle between huge and powerful forces in the world, and the bad side, known among other things as the Lords of Time (and yes, there is a Doctor Who reference in the book!), whilst the good guys are the Gods of the Night. The leader for the Gods of the Night is called Fin (he has long, silvery sparkly hair and silvery eyes with hints of purple - my brain can't even fully visualize that, but boy, do I want to read whatever book he's the hero of). He leads the Eleven, who are souls who have been resting since dinosaurs roamed the Earth, and now have been placed in the bodies of super hot dudes. Who have to help Fin fight the various evil supernatural creatures that are the minions of the Lords of Time (just to make it more confusing, there's "good" vampires and werewolves too). If the Gods of the Night don't stop the baddies,humanity will be wiped out on the 21st of December 2012 - the exact date when the Mayan calendar ended!

Our hero in this book is Ty Endeka, who when he was last conscious, was a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Yeah, I kid you not. All of the Eleven were dinosaurs in their last incarnation (although it's suggested that that is not who they originally were, and this battle between good and evil has been going on a LONG time). They need help adjusting to the modern world, and can't drive cars, so they have sexy ladies to chauffeur them around (because who wants a dude to do stuff like that?).

His driver is Kelly Maloy, who when she's not making lots of money driving the hot, but clearly dangerous Ty around is a student of some sort (I don't remember the finer details - c'mon, I just wanted to get to the dino parts!). If the Eleven don't concentrate real hard, their inner dino-ness seems to affect everyone around them, and people tend to get twitchy when gigantic pre-historic predators are around (yeah, none of the hot dudes seem to have been herbivores, if there had been one, I bet that guy would be the quiet, sensitive, nerdy one of the group). Anyways, Kelly is attracted to Ty, but also understands that he's not just your normal hot dude.

While the truth behind the Eleven is supposed to be kept secret, too much stuff happens over a short space of time for Kelly not to understand that there's a lot more out there that goes bump in the night than was dreamt of in her philosophy, and soon Fin has let her in on all the secrets, and conveniently Kelly is needed to help them defeat one of the evil lieutenants, boringly just called Nine (because there are Nine of them).

Over the course of the book, there are obviously a bunch of action sequences where the dino-dudes have to fight evil vampires and werewolves and such. I was disappointed to find that the Eleven don't actually shapeshift into actual gigantic dinosaurs, it's more like a big big dinosaur-shaped forcefield around each guy (which can still bite and rend and claw, so that's convenient). Also, at least one guy is a flying dinosaur, and one is one of those gigantic toothy water-based ones, which I liked a lot.

Naturally Kelly and Ty's attraction to each other is because they are each other's soul mates. The romance aspect of this book is not exactly the most compelling I've ever read. Nor is this ever going to be classified as great literature. But it was quite fun, it certainly offered something new in a genre where a lot of things are very samey and if it turns out that Nina Bangs(I do hope that's her real name) ever writes Fin's book, I promise to buy, read and review that too.(less)

By high school, I’d decided to trade in my lariat for a trench coat. I was into dark and dangerous. As an intrepid foreign correspondent, I’d stalk the mean streets of the world. Did I actually write anything? No, but I did read all of Agatha Christie’s mysteries.

I worked at a department store during college. My short stint in the accounting department taught me a lot about math. Three hundred-dollar shortages plus hysterical tears equaled instant move to gift-wrap. A career in math was not in my future. I didn’t care because I’d discovered “real” literature. I plowed through James Joyce’s Ulysses and Tolstoy’s War and Peace. If it didn’t make my eyes cross then it wasn’t worth reading. Yes, I admit it, I was a literary snob.

But there’s just so much “real” literature one person can take. I graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in English Literature and a determination to avoid books that induced eye crossing or had tragic endings. The only things I managed to write during those years were research papers.

I taught second grade for several years then spent two years in Dublin, Ireland. A friend and I supported ourselves by singing folk songs in Irish pubs. We weren’t great, but we were young, enthusiastic, and wore short skirts. It was obviously my destiny to be the next Judy Collins. I spent a lot of time poring through music books.

Returning to New Jersey and reality, I taught elementary school until I grew restless again. My cross-country odyssey included stays in Arizona, California, and Texas. Along the way, I indulged my love of horses. No black stallions, but I did have several beautiful Arabian mares. I read tons of books on breeding and showing.

Somewhere between California and Texas I grew addicted to romance novels and cats. The cat’s independent attitude was exactly the quality I admired in my romance heroes. And once I decided to try writing my own romances, I made sure a cat crept into each story.

Texas is my permanent home. I’ve come full circle. Born in San Antonio, I spent most of my life in New Jersey. Maybe the Texas in my blood accounts for my attachment to strong men, fast horses, and wide-open spaces. My love of cats? Haven’t a clue.(less)
