I don't know if perhaps it's me, but I there are a number of recipes in this book that I have had to tweak to make *ahem* BETTER. I am not a chef, but I do consider myself an amateur foodie of sorts. I had to adjust the muffin recipe (maybe I am just used to the super fabulousness of Gingerbread Muffin Company muffins, but anyways...), I had to work on the pizza dough recipe to get it to rise just so and become the correct consistency of pizza dough and not so crunchy at it kept turning out with...more

beginning cooks, busy cooks
This is the most fool-proof cookbook I've used. It's definitely for contemporary, American style cooking. Pretty much any standard American dish I can think of has a recipe here, and they're usually simple and tasty. It has sections discussing different cuts of meat and types of fruit and vegetables, complete with color illustrations.
It is an excellent, basic recipe book. I'd also recommend Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything". It has more international fare. But, you still nee...more

This is my go to book for baking, it has the best recipes for peanut butter cookies, ginger snaps, and fruit crisps. It also is a great cook book to have if you don't want to have 10 cook books (like I do) and it has enough of a variety to be your "only" cookbook, as these are tried and true recipes. The one downfall is that it doesn't have many ethnic or alternative (non-meat) recipes, so you'll have to go elsewhere for that.

this is a classic cookbook that I refer time and time again. Everything from meat temperatures to classic stews to biscuits and baked goods. Almost everything I've made from this book has been quite good and all of the recipes are easily adaptable to what you have lying around the kitchen. My favorite recipes: nun's puffs, blueberry-cornmeal pancakes, dijon chicken strata, beef stroganoff, & beef bourguignon (my favorite in the whole book!!!!!!), among others

I think this will always be my favorite cookbook (though I use allrecipes.com more and more for the ratings) because it has everything normal you'd want to cook and some things that are not so normal, too. It's good for making easy or hard things, fancy or dull. I think every home ought to have one.

This is a great cookbook, which only lost a little luster when compared to the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook. I have to say that almost every recipe I've tried has been a keeper - the beef stroganoff recipe in this one is much better than the ATKFC's. We love it.

The must-have kitchen resource. This has great instructions for picking, canning and freezing fresh fruits and vegetables, a great meat section and lots of yummy breakfast and quick bread recipes. This is my go-to-gal for basically anything.

This is a great go-to cookbook to remind yourself how to hard boil eggs or make pancakes. Lots of classic dishes that remind me of my childhood. I find it handy to have around, but a little dated.

This cookbook has all the great classic dishes. I would suggest every kitchen to have one. Directions are very easy to follow.

The best general-purpose cookbook I own. Even though I mostly cook vegetarian, this is worth a spot on any kitchen's shelf.

Good basic cookbook. The pages of mine are stuck together at the brownie recipe... which is the best one I've ever found.

This is just a note...not a review:
I have the 1989 edition, which appears to no longer be in print.

Good for finding classic American recipes, but not really inspiring beyond that.
