Schoen is a moderate Democrat by nature and a pollster by trade. His central thesis is that the time (he was writing in fall 2007) is ripe for a serious third party candidate for President, and the de-centralized nature of campaigning in the Internet era would give such a candidate a plausible chance at winning the presidency, or at least mounting a serious challenge.
