I didn't like the political aspects of this book. I'm just not a political monster. The main focus is a campaign for the state senate (of Alaska, of course) between a native female newcomer and the male whose held the seat for years. When Anne receives death threats, Kate Shugak is called in as security. It's pretty tame (read boring) until someone ends up dead then it livens up a little. Especially when Jim Chopin and Ethan enter the picture. It's rather interesting because Jim has it bad...more
The Singing of the Dead is not my favorite book in the Kate Shugak series, but it was still a worthwhile read. In this outing Kate has taken a job as bodyguard to a politician. Of course murder follows the campaign trail. The twist with this novel is that the present day murders are closely tied to a 1915 murder. Once again, Alaska's cultural heritage and environment play a huge part in the novel.
I think I picked this book up based on the beginning taking place in Dawson City in 1897, around the time of the Gold Rush. Then I looked at the back cover and saw that this was a Kate Shugak story and she goes to work as protection for a state senatorial candidate.
This is a campaign full of dirty tricks. Not to mention murder.

Worried about how she will protect and support her dead companion's son, Kate agrees to protect a native running for state senator, who has received death threats. When the candidate's chief fundraiser (and future son-in-law) is murdered, followed the murder of a campaign-hired researcher, Kate has to figure out who is behind the killings. Like almost all others, good stuff.
Kate Shugat hires on to work security for a Native Alaskan woman who is running for senator. This is just before Sarah Palin, but has many of the political overtones of Alaskan politics. Fun read on my vacation.
EVen visited Wasala where Sarah has a home.

Kate has a new mouth to feed, so she takes a high-paying job. Protecting a Native candidate for the Alaskan Congress turns out to have historical implications. Kate is as irresistible a character as ever.
One of the best Kate Shugaks. Made me think about how the state was founded--"first families" who began as lucky gold-miners and the loose ladies they married. Loved every minute of this book.
You all know I love this author and her Alaskan heroine. This book, however, did not leave me on the edge of my chair like most of hers. As always, though, a pleasant read.
Jumped in in the middle of this detective series set in Alaska. Hard to know whether I really would like it. Would give the first one a chance but it’s iffy.
One of my regular series. This one has Kate working as a bodyguard for a senatorial candidate. It is post-Jack and has a small bit of sexual tension between her and Jim Chopin.
Enjoyed listening to the audio book but would have liked in better if the reader pronounced the name of the village of Tok correctly. I swear she did the first time but then pronounced it like tik-TOCK. If that is all I have to complain about it must be okay, eh?
Kate Shugak....Dana Stabenow...Another favorite author discovered! I wish I would read these in order, though.
I enjoyed this double story, one taking place in 1915 during the Klondike gold rush, and one modern Alaskan story
Excellent book to reread. Kate Shugak is always fun to read and cheer for!!!!
A good solid mystery with the added benefit of an Alaskan history lesson.
I'm really really really loving that Mutt!!! Adorable.
very interesting converging and historic plots
Excellent; Continuing character: Kate Shugak;
Another dependable Kate Shugak mystery.
Keep them coming...
Very interesting take on connecting historical case to current murder. Love the Alaskan setting and Stabenow's style.
Loved it.
I love this series. In fact, after reading this one (#11), I read on through #15: A Fine and Bitter Snow, A Grave Denied, A Taint in the Blood, and A Deeper Sleep. The characters are always interesting and fun, the mystery entertaining and often enlightening about Alaska politics (and other issues) and Native concerns. But most of all, I enjoy following the relationships and watching them change and grow. After taking a respite, I just placed a hold on the next two.
I gave this book two stars on the first run through, but I just came back to it to reread after getting caught up with the series and I kind of liked it better on a second read. I think I was too caught up in what was going on between Kate and Jim the first go to really appreciate the secondary/parallel historical plot, which was actually pretty interesting.

Not my favorite of Dana Stabenow's series...but still enjoyable.
