Sammy Harkham's collection, sort of like Raw, a place to go for the avant garde comics of that year… and this was.. 2006? And this is the first time I am reading this volume, and by now I have read more expanded versions of work by the included artists. But it's nice to see them in a kind of historical context, I guess. I also just read #5, which I liked a little better, but I still did like quite a bit of this, actually, as much as I dislike collections, which are inevitably uneven. It's a pict ...more

Not really my thing, but I'm glad I got my boundaries pushed. Nice to know what is out there, style-wise.

More great/insane comics from around the world. My favorites in this volume are the comics by Matthew Thurber, CF, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Vanessa Davis, James McShane, Tom Gould, and most of all Souther Salazar. The addition of examining some more historical work by the late and Suiho Tagawa and Marc Smeets was a very nice touch as well (and I felt they both fit right in with the contemporary stuff). There were also many illustrations without words that weren't exactly comics but were certainly ...more

The avant garde of comics these days - comics meets modern art. It will either appall you or blow your mind. Kramers Ergot is the place for cutting edge short-form comics lately with just a hint of yesterday's cutting edge comics. For me the precursors to the book are: Zap Comics (60's), Arcade (70's) and RAW and Weirdo (80's). Dozens of diverse artists are packed in to each issue. Check out a ten page sample

So pretty. The cute, creepy WWII-era Japanese comics were the real reason I bought this, but there are also wonderful things by Vanessa Davis, John Porcellino, a really funny Paper Rad story, and more and more. Some are better than others, but that's the nature of an anthology. This book is incredibly rich and beautiful and makes me want to draw.

These anthologies may be the bleeding edge of the avant garde in comics, but I guess I just don't really like avant garde comics all that much. The parts that actually tell a story are for the most part okay to pretty good, and there is some work by some folks I like, but there's also a lot of pages filled with weird crap that's no fun at all.

Some Fantastic, awe-inspiring sh*t in here! Wide-open creativity running rampant over 200+ pages of heavy stock in kaleidoscopic color.
Favorite artists included here: Helge Reumann, Shary Boyle, Fabio Viscogliosi and Jeff Ladouceur.

This book had so many drawings of people peeing. I feel like I should point that out. More generally, it was totally fucked up and awesome.

Better than Kramers Ergot 5. I don't know how it compares to KE7 bc it was so stupid big I didn't wanna check it out. I may now, though, bc these collections are pretty amazing.

bought after reading kramers five...another very strong slab of cutting edge imagery. Its hard not to feel like you are reading something important
