Zachary Taylor (The American Presidents #12)
The rough-hewn general who rose to the nation’s highest office, and whose presidency witnessed the first political skirmishes that would lead to the Civil War
Zachary Taylor was a soldier’s soldier, a man who lived up to his nickname, “Old Rough and Ready.” Having risen through the ranks of the U.S. Army, he achieved his greatest success in the Mexican War, propelling

This is a short and simple biography of President Taylor, volume twelve of The American Presidents series. (Once again I was unable to pick up a substantial bio that covered a president's entire life. I'll be glad when I get to Lincoln.) General Eisenhower does a pretty good job of covering Taylor's history. The focus of the book is on his military career, especially his actions in the Mexican-American War. Whether that's because Eisenhower himself is a retired General, or because that really wa...more
Zachary Taylor is actually a cousin of mine, but I can't say I'm overwhelmed with pride at the conclusion of this particular biography. Taylor was our 12th president, elected in 1848 but dying in office just 16 months later, causing historians speculate as to what could have been had he lived.
Taylor is special for a few reasons:
- He's the first President elected having held no previous office.
- He's the last President to have held slaves while in office.
- He's the ...more

Interesting and just long enough!
A couple of interesting tidbits:
Taylor's oldest daughter was Jefferson Davis' (President of the Confederacy) first wife -- she died a few months after their wedding in 1835 of malaria.
Taylor was career army (and a great soldier) and disappointed that he had to resign his commission when he learned that he was elected President.
He maintained his rank as Major General and commission until the day he took the oath of office.

Just wanted to know more about some of our lesser known presidents. Taylor was a "good" man although he chose the military and politics over abolition of slavery. He owned slaves but he was opposed to the expansion of slavery.
A very brief bio of the life of our 12th President. I wasn't to interested in the first part of the book dealing with Taylor's military career but I enjoyed the part about his Presidency.
I knew when I chose a short biography that I wouldn't be getting an in-depth look at Zachary Taylor. I think this book did a great job of providing a brief look at Taylor's life, military career, and presidency.
a little short and I should have liked more details about home life and less about the military campaigns, but it gave all the highlights.
Unlike the earlier Presidential Series bios that I have read (Tyler and Van Buren), this one was very well written and pleasurable to read.
The author John Eisenhower was very knowledgeable of Taylor's presidency and made it very interesting. This one did not seem as much life a Time-Life condensation of a presidency.
Highly recommended.
