" When night comes, the gargoyles creep on stubs of feet. They swoop down to hunch with gargoyle friends around the fountaiin and mock the watcheman as he passes by " Eve Bunting

During the day they protect our Churches , Schools and Libraries. Then there is night, and the time for the gargoyles to arise.

I have always had a fascination with gargoyles. This book caught my attention and I had to by it. The book is in black and white. David Wiesne More...

In this book, gargoyles come to life at night! The beautifully detailed black and white illustrations done by David Wiesner show the fun things the gargoyles take part in when they come alive. They visit the museum, fly (if they have wings) straight up into the sky, splash in the fountain, scare people passing by, and talk of what they’ve seen and felt (the sun burning them, the rain pouring down on them, and the birds that perch on them that leave behind stains). But, they always return to t More...

I have been a fan of Eve Buntings for a long time. I was drawn to this book because I hadn't heard of it and because it seemed a drastic change of topic for the author I knew, with heart tugging texts such as Fly Away Home and The Wednesday Surprise. After reading through the book, which was also illustrated by David Weisner, the author of award winning books such as Tuesday(1992) I was pleasantly surprised to find a creepy and somewhat humorous book. As the illustrations reveal the goofy antics More...

Bunting tells story through poetry in a vivid ways. She uses fun and creative language like "split-splat" as verb or the idea that laughs need space to "somersault". The images are dark and a bit frightening so I'd have to decide carefully to whom I'd want to recommend the text. The images and text compliment each other well and Bunting wrote only some pages with one or two words while others have lines. It forces the reader to think see the pictures differently. Really f

This book was okay at best. I thought the illustrations were nice, but because of what they were, I didn't care for them. I didn't like the thought of gargoyles coming alive at night to roam where they pleased. And I'm not sure how a young child would feel about this book. I'm not going to go around recommending this book anytime soon.

A bit creepy overall, but a fantastic book with amazing illustrations by David Wiesner. We borrowed the book primarily because we love his books and illustrations.

This story shows what stone gargoyles do at night while everyone is sleeping. Our girls don't really know what gargoyles are, but they liked the book and it's likely to make them wonder the first time they see one for real.

I see what Eve Bunting is trying to do here, but it didn't appeal to me. David Wiesner's illustrations are the best part of the book, yet I would recommend looking at any of his other books before this one. I'm not sure who would be the target audience for this. I think it would be too scary for some kids, and not scary enough for others. It definitely missed the mark with me.

A fun book that tells the story of what gargoyles do at night! An entertaining book that might entice a reluctant reader. The black and white illustrations pair with the story nicely as it adds the element of darkness, yet not too much! Students might try to write their own story of what something might do in the night!

I've liked gargoyles since my college days, and I enjoy black and white photography and illustrations as well, so this book was right up my alley. Love David Wiesner illustrations as well, so I enjoyed this one. It isn't as light as the other Wiesners I've seen, but still interesting.

I like this combination of author/illustrator, though I wish some tinge of green from the text could be shown in the illustrations. This fun story tells what the gargoyles at the museum do at night, and all of the fun they have together before the freeze in place during the day.

I love the playful spin this book gives to the seemingly stiff and creepy figures of gargoyles. Eve Bunting’s poetic language and David Wiesner’s striking black and white illustrations come together to create a fantastical night of gargoyle fun.

The secret lives of gargoyles and their nightly frolics. This book reminded me of the gargoyles on the National Cathedral. Outstanding charcoal gray, black, and white illustrations.

This is an interesting tale of what gargoyles do in their downtime. I think this book is a little dark for small children, but the illustrations are amazing and older kids would enjoy it.

Beautiful word choice, and another great one to show point of view. I've also planned to use it to teach a lesson on using a prompt that has to do with curiosity.

Definitely one of my all-time favorites. I used to read this to my own kids and they loved it. The illustrations are beautiful and very fun to look at time after time.

Although I really enjoy reading Eve Bunting books with my son, it was the illustrations (David Weisner) rather than the story that made this book.

I loved the illustrations. the prose is a little more than what I am comfortable with. Funny and a little spooky. Always showing the reader a world of interest and amazement just outside the ordinary everyday experience.

Some nice lyricism. I can see this being a big hit with the read-aloud group of younger boys around this Halloweening time of year.
