Mark Twain read one of Grace Donworth's "letters" in a newspaper and mistook it for the real thing. When he discovered it was fiction, he encouraged the author to write more letters and include them in a book. This is the result, published in 1908.

Jenny Allen is a plain, uneducated unmarried woman who lives with her brother, his wife and children. The story is told through a series of letters sent by Jenny to Miss Musgrove. A lively correspondence begins between the two as Jenny tells of the tr
