I rated this book highly for its coverage of Louisiana during and after Reconstruction. The Plessy v. Ferguson case clearly shows the move away from equal rights and towards the wishes of politically strong white supremacists. It is chilling to see the changes that occur over four decades, especially in a city like New Orleans, where many rights appreciated today were present before and after the Civil War, only to be removed by 1898.

I do wish the book had a better narrative strand. The research
fantastic --and impeccably researched!
