I originally started JD Robb’s In Death series because it was recommended to me by well… everyone. And Yes it is good. In fact I ended up liking this 2nd instalment even more then the first however (except for Roarke) I don't totally love it either. I originally started JD Robb’s In Death series because it was recommended to me by well… everyone. And Yes it is good. In fact I ended up liking this 2nd instalment even more then the first however (except for Roarke) I don't totally love it either. The writing is top notch and Robb spins an easy to read dark mystery filled with lots of interesting suspects(including Roarke again) But I’m just not a fan of the police procedurals and therefore large parts of this book dragged for me. Particularly when Eve very dryly and very frequently interrogated the many suspects (these parts read like furniture assembly instructions) and in the end I couldn’t have cared less about whodunit. I was reading strictly for the romance and a certain someone named Roarke.

Sigh… Irish lilting, button carrying, patient, unwaveringly romantic, sexy, mystery man Roarke. If only he existed in the real world. Yes I have developed a serious literary crush on him and he’s what keeps me coming back to this series. I love how he is tough yet tender with Eve while accepting her unconditionally just the way she is.

Speaking of Eve, although I still find her character very difficult to like she does soften here some, allowing herself to gradually except the little pockets of peace Roarke creates for her. I’m also beginning to realize that Roarke is equally as damaged as Eve and that’s what draws the two of them together, making their developing relationship worth watching. One of my favourite parts of this book would be the afterwards of an explosive confrontation when Eve finally, finally lets Roarke in. (Well that and their little moonlit trip to casa del Roarke in Mexico)

The future aspect (its New York 2058) which I found unnecessary and gimmicky in the first book has been expanded slightly and while not distracting it does provide an interesting aspect that I enjoyed this time. (I really want an Autochef) There are also some great secondary characters here; and I particularly liked Eve’s troublesome relationship with Roarke’s man-servant Summerset and her wild, no excuses nightclub singing girlfriend Mavis.

GLORY IN DEATH sees Lieutenant Eve Dallas searching for a serial killer of prominent career women. Eve follows the clues and interrogates a lot of suspects, getting her thick skin bruised in the process. As the clues take her closer to those she cares about like Roarke and her boss, Eve becomes relentless in her search for the killer, putting everything else secondary. Its Roarke who sees how tired and overworked she is and forces her to step back and recharge (in his spa tub!) In the end everyone’s bloody, the killers caught (I never did guess that one but then again I wasn’t really trying) and damn if Roarke hasn’t set things up so I just have to read the next book Immortal in Death. I'm so happy I have found another series this good. I must admit I wasn't expecting to like it this much. What makes me the most happy person on Earth is that I heard every book in this series is as good as this first 2 and as there are 30 more of them still to read I will be extremely entertained for quite a while.

I WANT TO MARRY YOU, ROARKE!!!!!

I'm going to use this review as an excuse to post more Gandy Candy.

Opening line: “The dead were her business.”

From that first line, I was sucked in. There is something about Robb’s writing that just sucks me in completely. I love the way she describes things. I love the way the words flow and I love that there’s this sense of detachment or coldness in the overall tone of her writing. It makes the mystery of the story that much more intriguing.

Eve Dallas is one of my favourite heroines. I love her strength and determination in her work. It’s admirable. Ironically enough, Eve Dallas lives and breathes death. It’s her job and Eve takes her duty seriously. So much so that she forgets to take care of herself.

In Glory in Death, Eve is the primary on another murder case, this time of a well-known woman in law who was caught off-guard with a slice to her throat. Lieutenant Dallas is on the case, doing her job to perfection. But when more deaths occur, Dallas is thinking that maybe the person she initially thought was committing the crimes isn’t the right person anymore. This causes her to retrace her steps and review the evidence. The suspense in this book is amazing, all the way to the end of the book. I can’t even choose which one I prefer between the first book or this one! Both are great!

And then there’s Eve’s relationship with Roarke. There are some rough tides between the lovebirds in this one, but in the end, Roarke is still as loyal as can be. I want to marry Roarke! Even when he’s angry, he manages to turn me on. There’s nothing about this guy that isn’t sexy. Simply put, Roarke is a dream. And I want him bad.

I loved that Eve let herself feel in this one. She’s so preoccupied with her work life that she doesn’t take time for herself. In this one, she does. She spends some quality time with Mavis, her awesome best friend and of course, Roarke, who does the most sweetest things for her. I’m incredibly jealous. Would it be creepy to say I wish I was Eve Dallas?

I can’t wait to read the next one! I wonder why it took me so long to read this series. Obviously, I was missing out. And if you haven’t read this either, then make sure you pick this one up soon! (less)

I'm a little past half-way through and I can say right at this point that I hate it when Roarke isn't around. Unlike the first book, Naked In Death, I found myself less interested in the murder mystery this time and more focused on Eve's and Roarke's relationship.

I'm curious whether Glory will end in a proposal and if it does, will Eve accept or do I have to wait till Book 3 (whatever that title is) to find out - or, God forbid, several titles later! I'll know the first part of my question later...more

I listened to this book on audio. I don't know if it was because the narrator was so good (I read book 1) or if it was the story, but I liked this book a lot more than book 1. This is a fantastic series.

Eve is a fantastic character. She's tough, kick ass, smart, and she has hints of a troubled past. I like that the author doesn't dump a ton of information on us about her past, she gives tidbits in each book.

This series continues to suck me in. Lt. Eve Dallas takes a serious turn in her relationship with the sexy Irishman Rourke - he asks her to move in! He no longer thinks he's falling in love with Eve; Roarke is now head over heels in love with her! I loved Eve struggling to reconcile her growing feelings for Roarke with her need for independence. One of the initial reservations I had about this series was the doubt about the “readability” of a series with the same leading characters, Eve Dallas and Roarke. I mean, wouldn’t it get boring after a while?
The first book read like a “standard” romance to me. Boy meets girl, falls for her, girl falls right back, they defeat a murderer, and live happily ever after. What’s to add?

<5 Stars...I LOVED it!

Not as good as the first...but oh my it's still a 5 Star!!!

I know now that I'm in trouble with this series...how in the world am I going to be able to read anything else now that I've started?! I'll try to make myself quit after the next one in line because I don't want to burn myself out...but HOW will I do it?!

The second book in the In Death series by J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. Eve Dallas is once again called to the site of a murder. This one a high profile Prosecuting Attorney Cicely Towers. Basically, a fast-paced, futuristic crime drama/mystery with a bit of romance in the form of boyfriend, Roarke. The mystery wasn't too hard to figure out but, of course, there were a few "red herrings" that tried to lead you away.

Well, I know this is just a book. And I need to suspend disbelief a little to enjoy many of my favorite authors, series, books, movies, etc.
But serial killers are not like this at all. I don't mean to be melodramatic, but a dear friend of mine was murdered and the town ravished by a serial killer. Robb wrote the suspense ending of the story without much research and thought. I certainly don't mind suspense-lite, but this book made me feel belittled as a reader. It's definitely not meant for serious reading.

Please be assured, anyone reading ths: I can put my personal knowledge of what it's really like aside easily. IMO, the eyes of any suspense fan would call foul on this ending. It was just too 'easy" and cheesy for a pro like Nora Roberts. I wish Nora Roberts would concentrate more on research and quality and less on cranking out quantity. The world of intelligent Romantic Suspense is lacking.

Oh and why the hell would Roarke have a huge society party during the pinacle of Eve's case. The night of the party is pretty outrageous. And why on earth would he leave her alone while she acts as bait for a serial killer?!?!?!
Oh forgot how angry that makes me. I take back the Roarke is a god statement!
While the book has lots of yummy Roarke and Eve drama and relationship issues to increase its value on my ratings scale, the painful scenes with Roarke telling Eve his ex was a great, carefree lover and how much spirit and beauty she had made me almost as crazy as Christian's "bath with the ex-sub" scene in 50 Shades of Crap2.

All in all, ths was not nearly as good as the first book in my opinion. Though there is one shining star in the mix-- Susan Erickson narrates the series. She is so damn good in this book, she has easily become my hands down favorite series narrator. The good parts of this book were highlighted by Erickson: Eve who hasn't always been my favorite heroine, gets a fresh perspective that's hard not to love- through the interpretation of Susan Erickson. Oh and her accent and timing for Roarke is almost in league with Phil Gigante's JZB. (before I am flayed alive, remember Erickson is rocks at male and female voices; Gigante is great at sexy male voices, but his female voices leave a hell of a lot to be desired (Dreamman- Linda Howard audio??)

I liked this book a little better than the first in the series.

Roarke (the male romantic lead) irked me in the first book because he was over-exaggerated both on the sweet side of the spectrum and the alpha male side of the spectrum. This second book tones him down a bit - he's still very sweet and very alpha, but the two mix together in a more convincing way.

The second of approx. forty books in the "In Death" series, but the last one that I will be reading.

Once again I found it pretty obvious who the killer was from almost the outset, and was surprised that they weren't picked up sooner. This, however, isn't my main bugbear with the novel. Acabei de ler este livro hoje, eram 3h da manhã do dia 21. E porquê a esta hora? Porque estava entusiasmado com acabá-lo. :)
É o segundo livro que leio da autora. Estou a segui-los pela ordem da saga "Mortal".
Se achei Nudez Mortal menos policial que romance, neste foi ao contrário. Deixando as conquistas à parte e estando já o casal Eve e Roarke juntos, a autora dedicou-se mais ao conceito policial.
Desta vez, o caso passa-se em 2058 e, ao longo da leitura, somos surpreendidos com aspectos futuris...more

I'm getting a serious thing for this series. Two books in, and I'm now a little fangirl over the fact that there are 798 more books in this series.

I love Eve to a point I can't even say. She's my favorite protagonist in a long while. She's just so...boldly drawn. I see her clear as day. She surprises me, but I never doubt her, and because of that, while I'm reading the book I'm completely involved. There is no hesitation, like this doesn't feel real or that was so TSTL, what is going on. Never...more I'm getting a serious thing for this series. Two books in, and I'm now a little fangirl over the fact that there are 798 more books in this series.

I love Eve to a point I can't even say. She's my favorite protagonist in a long while. She's just so...boldly drawn. I see her clear as day. She surprises me, but I never doubt her, and because of that, while I'm reading the book I'm completely involved. There is no hesitation, like this doesn't feel real or that was so TSTL, what is going on. Never any of that. I'm knee deep in a mystery, picking up clues alongside her, while also becoming involved with her thoughts, feelings, fears, and growing relationship with the enigmatic Roarke.

I'm a bit in love with this guy. I love that he's got a shady past. That he wheeled and dealed from nothing and can still throw a punch like he's in the back alleys of Dublin. I love that Eve feels herself swoon then feels stupid over it but makes a joke and kisses him anyway. I love seeing the walls come down, but slowly, because that's the only way it would ever happen for Eve. She tries and she scares but there's no TSTL moments for her. This is the sort of character I love to read.

The characters around her are so easy to fall for too, with their quirks and dialogue. There are moments I'm cheering because someone said exactly what I wanted them to say. It's fast and funny and impossible not to love it. This is a fully fleshed out time and place filled with people who make their mark quickly and permanently. I think I've got a thing for the new chief of police.

I could go on and on, but simply this series has everything I love in a really good book. It has my romance and my chest tightening moments where I can't help but swoon, and I sweat over the delicious tension between the leads, but it also has a really strong, developed mystery with characters that are just as vivid as Eve in a future that is believable and interesting and I want to escape into this story every chance I get.

LOVED this book! Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book. Since this is the second book of the series, JD Robb takes off right from the start. The crime story and love story were more much more developed than Naked in Death, and it was awesome.

Glory in Death is the second book in the futuristic In Death Series by Nora Roberts, written under her pseudo name, J.D. Robb. It follows Lieutenant Eve Dallas through her homicide cases and her relationship with big roller, Roarke.

This installment picks up a couple of months after the debut novel in the series, Naked in Death, left off. Eve is still dating hunky Roarke, but he’s pushing for more from Dallas then she is willing to give. He wants a commitment and gives her an ultimatum that leaves them on the outs for a while. Until they both realize they can no longer go on without the other and Eve gives in and confesses her love for him and agrees to move in with him.

Meanwhile, Eve is investigating a string of murders, where once again they all the victims have connections with Roarke. Eve doesn’t believe he had anything to do with the murders, but feels she must find a way to take suspicion off of him.

After coming to the wrong conclusion on who murdered these beautiful successful women, she finally stumbles onto the real killer and she has to take him down before he takes her out or before another innocent woman loses her life at his hand.

After reading the first installment of this series, and loving it, I couldn’t wait to delve into this one. I have to say that the book was good, but I was a bit disappointed through a lot of it. The blurb on the book makes you think the storyline is a repeat of Naked in Death. Another set of murders that all lead to Roarke being the killer, but that’s not the case. Yes the victims all had connections to Roarke, but nobody ever really suspected him in this book, where everybody did the last time around.
Although reading the blurb on the book, you would think everyone was accusing him.
I found the book kind of dragged during the standoff between Eve and Roarke that resulted from his ultimatum to have all or nothing with her. There was no Roarke and it left that part of the book extremely lacking. Not to mention reading through Eve following leads that even I didn’t think could possibly end up being the murderer.
But the book did turn around when Roarke and Eve gave in to their feelings to each other once again and quit fighting. And of course Eve getting on the right trail as far as the murders went was helpful to.

The last few scenes in the book really turned it around for me. Eve scuffling with the murderer and Roarke coming on to the scene, his protective instincts taking over. And it was too cute with them walking away all beat up and him telling her he wants her to marry him. Will she?? I guess I’ll have to read the next one to find out. With over thirty books and counting in this series, I’d say it’s a pretty good guess that they probably will wed eventually…but it’s just a matter of how long it takes him to wear her down .

review of the first two books, because the first alone feels more like a sketch than a full story arc. and, no, it's more a 3 star than a 4 if I think about it too much, but I have to give credit to anything so engagingly written that I burn through it in 24 hours or so.

jd robb is writing romance/mysteries. that slash is very important (no pun intended, though these are chock-full of bloody murders), since thusfar the books' page time is about equally devoted to tough-as-nails NY-of-the-near-fu...more

Then there is another victim, a young up and coming actress. Same scenario – found in the street, dressed for a meeting with someone, throat slashed. And this young actress also has a link to Roarke. The two were former lovers and have remained on friendly albeit distant terms. Eve is distressed by this. One link she can deal with, but two? Ties to two separate murder victims, obviously and forensically proven to be killed by the same person, and she’s got to do some interrogating. To make matter worse, Eve is having trouble getting accustomed to the speed at which her relationship with Roarke is progressing and the two are at some odds due to her inability to commit and his desire for it to be all or nothing. When Roarke walks out, Eve is faced with being alone – not something she’d normally worry about, but this is different. She’s finding it much harder to be without someone after having been with Roarke.

Eve figures out the killer is now in it for the glory – the publicity, the attention, the thrill of baffling the police force. She orchestrates a deal with a reporter-acquaintance to get the case -and Eve- a huge amount of exposure, giving the killer a new and very recognisable target, Eve herself. She’s determined to draw his attention and lure him in that way but when it backfires and the killer goes after the wrong person, Eve is forced to rethink her approach. The media are making her look foolish, playing up the lack of leads in the case, with one reporter in particular continually making a nuisance of himself and constantly getting her way. She’ll deal with him later but right now, she needs to focus on finding the killer….

The second book is always interesting in a series, because it’s a good test of how the author is developing their characters and whether or not it looks like an idea that can be sustained. Of course I already know this one is sustainable, because I’m coming very late to the In Death party, but having now completed book #2, I can see why these books have done so well and why there are now over 30 of them.

They are so incredibly readable! It’s so easy to just pick them up, settle down on the couch or in bed for a couple of hours and just rip through them. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, moreso than I did the first and I am really coming to appreciate the character of Eve. She has an incredibly disturbing past and she’s a really driven character, determined to be the best homicide cop she can be. She is able to battle through the gritty, gruesome details that come with her job and focus on finding justice for victims. Because of her lack of family in her background, she’s accused in this novel of not understanding family values and also, of lacking compassion, feeling and emotion. The barbs sting, low blows that they are but I have to agree with the counter-opinion put forward by Robb through Roarke and occasionally Feeny, that Eve does not at all lack compassion. If anything, she has an abundance of it, and it’s what drives her at times, do do this job. There’s very little dignity in death, especially a violent one and Eve has dedicated her life to making sure that those that suffer through violent crimes are avenged through the ways of justice. She’s an intriguing character and I am interested in learning more about her. In this novel Robb just began to touch on perhaps Eve getting to the bottom of her past and I think that will definitely be explored in further novels. That’s reason enough to keep reading.

I felt the criminal and procedural element was tighter and more interesting in this novel than in the first – more chilling as well. I’ve come to terms a bit more with the futuristic world. It’s kind of amusing how far advanced 2058 is in this world and although I am sceptical about a lot of the situations, there’s no doubt of the speed at which technology is advancing. I hope I live to see the day of something like the AutoChef. I quite like the idea of it making things that I request.

I’ll be picking up the 3rd novel from the library probably after New Years. I have a long way to go with these books but I don’t want to read nothing but them for the next month or two! Trying to space them out so they don’t get too routine. Enjoying them so far though so looking forward to continuing with the series.(less)

Nora Roberts. . .where do I start? She's a master of formula, but not much else. To be fair, I've only read the first IN DEATH book, along with another of her novels, which I couldn't get past page fifty because of its utter failure in concept, plot, and execution. But alas,this isn't about that.

But alas,this isn't about that.

Glory in Death, Roberts second novel in the story of Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her flamboyant billionaire lover Roarke, starts with the murder of a well-known criminal attorney named Cicely Towers. The breadcrumb trail that follows from there is a series of rollarcoaster ups and downs--not always for the best reasons.

Techincally, Roberts is a sound writer. She's sleek and lean, but gives you enough to immerse yourself within the narrative. However, at times you can be left sctratching your head at rather odd, and sometimes unrealistic charactization. Eve Dallas, for instance, is a tough ass cop who takes her job very, very seriously, and yet, we are to believe she can hop from solving a chilling murder case to being melted like butter in the arms of her luxiourous lover like a teenage girl. And Roarke himself seems to be a bit of a crybaby in a couple spots about his desire for her to profress she loves him.

Within the first fifty pages of the novel, there is serious tension between them that is very enjoyable as it escalates, but within the next fifty pages all is well and they both can't get enough of each other in their fits of sex. Which leaves me, the reader, to wonder why the hell this was even included, as the whole angle is seemginly thrown away. In truth it serves as a transition for their overall relationship, which is explained with more satisfying and organic answers(err. . .in retrospect, maybe not)near the end of the book, but the immediate effect is pretty disappointing.

Roberts loses the plot here and there up until the last one hundred pages, which I actaully blazed though this evening. While I have reservations about Robert's abilty to tell a "get together" romance(the first book had my eyes rolling constantly), she is much better suited for the "maitenance" side of fictional couples, which also allows her to focus more attention to the plot, which, while not exactly the cleverest brain teaser in the world, is enjoyable in the guilty pleasure sense.

All in all, a three star effort on Mrs. Roberts part. This could have been a four star if not for the flaws. I will most certainly be reading the third book in the In Death series in the future. I recommend to anyone who'd be willing to tolerate the first book's misteps.(less)

Lt. Eve Dallas has another complicated murder case on her hands. Prosecuting Attorney Cicely Towers has had her throat viciously slashed in a back alley. All her money, jewelry, as well as her expensive handbag and shoes were left at the scene, nothing is missing except her umbrella. No one can figure out why the victim was in the alley. Eve's boss was a close personal friend of the victim, and needs his best detective's help to solve the case.

During her sophomore year in high school, she transferred to a local public school, where she met Ronald Aufdem-Brinke, her future first husband.

In Augusy 17, 1968, as soon as she had graduated from High School, Eleanor married, against her parents' wishes. The marriage settled in Keedysville, Maryland. Her husband worked at his father's sheet-metal business before joining her parents in their lighting company. While, she worked briefly as a legal secretary. "I could type fast but couldn't spell, I was the worst legal secretary ever," she says now. After their sons, Dan and Jason, were born she stayed home. Calling this her "Earth Mother" years, she spent much of her time doing crafts, including ceramics and sewing her children's clothes. The marriage ended separating, and they obtained the divorce in January 1985.

In February 1979, a blizzard in forced her hand to try another creative outlet. She was snowed in with a three and six year old with no kindergarten respite in sight and a dwindling supply of chocolate. During the now famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write down one of those stories. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981 as Nora Roberts, a shortened form of her birth name Eleanor Marie Robertson, because she assumed that all authors had pen names.

Eleanor wrote under the pseudonym Jill March a story for a magazine titled "Melodies of Love".

Eleanor met her second husband, Bruce Wilder, when she hired him to build bookshelves. They were married in July 1985. Her husband owns and operates a bookstore in Boonsboro, Maryland called "Turn the Page Books". Since that time, they've expanded their home, traveled the world.

In 1992, she decided adopted other pseudonym so to publish a futuristic-suspense novels, she first decided to use the pseudonym D.J. MacGregor, but she discovered that this pseudonym was used by another author. In 1995, her first "In Death" serial novel was published under the pseudonym J.D. Robb, the initials "J.D." were taken from her sons, Jason and Dan, while "Robb" is a shortened form of Roberts.

Eleanor has also been known as Sara Hardesty, because when the "Born In" series was released in U.K. it carried that name instead of Nora Roberts. She has since changed publishers.

Eleanor has been plagiarized by another best-selling romance writer, Janet Dailey. The practice came to light after a reader read Nora Roberts' "Sweet Revenge" and Janet Dailey's "Notorious" back-to-back; she noticed several similarities and posted the comparable passages on the Internet. Calling the plagiarism "mind rape," Eleanor sued Janet Daily. In 1997, Janet, admitted to repeatedly plagiarizing from Nora Roberts' work, and that both "Aspen Gold" and "Notorious" lifted heavily from Nora Roberts's work. Both of those novels were pulled from print after Janet's admission. She acknowledged the plagiarism and blamed it on a psychological disorder. In a settlement, Janet paid Eleanor an undisclosed sum, which Eleanor donated to the Literacy Volunteers of America.

A founding member of the Romance Writers of America (R.W.A.), she was the first inductee in the organization's Hall of Fame. She also is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry. (less)
