Not bad. I'm beginning to understand what made this such an important play in its day; what with all the controversy surrounding 'New Women'.
Shaw keeps it all alive by dragging the plot past the second act where traditional 'Fallen Women' plays would end (The aged prostitute embracing religion and redemption). This allows him to send his political message and piss off a bunch of critics at the same time. Vivie chooses to systematically reject everyone in her past life to bury herself in work...more

Entertaining social commentary (albeit now dated) in the form a play about the causes of prostitution. Shaw's experiments with language and paradoxically (I say this because of the subject matter) feminist views merit significant thought.

G.B. "Boombox" Shaw at his finest. It's a pretty funny play and so I had expected a comic ending, but no, it's a tragedy this one. Anyhow, we forgive him. It's worth the read, preface and all.

Short read, well done, characters rendered nicely. But ending feels like there is more to come - despite the finality, doesn't feel done. Like a movie begging for a sequel.

The writing in this play is so rich in detail - I read it several years ago and I still remember some of the details very clearly.

I remember this cemented my feelings that George Bernard Shaw had a really good eye for personalities & human folly.

It was a decent book. The daughter was annoying, but I think that's what Shaw was going for.

One of my favorites by Shaw. Biting in its commentary on early 20th century British piety, tenderly vulnerable and gratifyingly witty.
