Maria Weisz has always been Shrew & Company’s most easygoing investigator and the sisterhood relies on her soothing empathy during times of stress. The Shrews have no idea, though, that Maria’s outward calm disguises long-simmering turmoil.
For years, she’s relied on her secret lover Eric Falk to chase away her demons, but he’s tired of an outlet for her anger. He’s ready to call it quits; however, when his alpha and Maria’s boss make them partner up to fetch a couple of kidnapped Bear shifter kids, he has no choice but to reevaluate a commitment.
With unsettling revelations about Maria’s nomadic childhood surfacing and the formerly mellow Eric becoming a Bear with power that rivals his alpha, she’s desperate to shut him out. Although he claims he loves her in spite of her hang-ups, she’s used to the people who claim to love her lying to her. A Shrew and a Bear might make an impressive duo both on the job and off, but Maria can’t trust giving him her heart. She doesn’t want to give Eric the chance to prove that he’s yet another liar. ___

Maria has trust issues believing anyone who says they care for her is a liar. When Eric and Maria are thrown together on a mission, Eric tries his hardest to have her trust and open up to him. Maria is afraid that if she gives in to Eric, he will tire of her and leave.
INCREDIBLE fantastic fast paced well written creative read by a truly gifted author. The characters spring to life with the plot and breathtaking scene descriptions. The chemistry between Maria and Eric is filled with passion and devotion. I adored both characters as they are quite an intriguing couple. As a turned bear shifter Eric is a force to be reckoned with. I relished this story; a most exhilarating read. If you treasure shifter romance this is an excellent choice for your library. {I received a copy of this book for a completely honest review}. In the world of fantasy romance the possibilities are endless and always fascinating. Without reservations I recommend this book.
This book is more enjoyable when the series is read in order. At first I didn't like Maria, but the more that is revealed about her, the more I came to like her and root for her. Eric was awesome and just what she needed. This book has lots of surprises, paranormal elements, humor, suspense, steamy romance, and a HEA. The story doesn't have a cliff hanger ending, but the major story arc still hasn't ended and there are two pairings of couples that have been introduced, but not resolved yet. I can't wait to read the next story in the series!
Eric's Edge is more like Maria's raggedy edge, but when they fall over it, they fall together, getting a HEA and so much more.
'Eric's Edge' is the fifth book in Holley Trent's Shrew & Company series of paranormal romances about a group of women who have banded together as private investigators after being experimented on, supposedly in trials for things like anger management drugs, becoming so much more than they were, and the men who love them. I love Holley Trent's books and I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I've read in this series so I had no idea of the background to the story and I wasn't sure if I'd suffer from a lack of previous knowledge, but I needn't have worried. There's just enough of the background and history in this book that I didn't feel like I was missing out on much of Maria and Eric's story and once I started reading, I very quickly became totally absorbed in the story and really didn't want to put it down, but it is a full-length novel and took me a few of days to read it. This book can easily be read as a stand alone and I absolutely loved it.
Recently made werebear Eric Falk has been in love with private investigator and empath Maria Weisz for years, although how many years is ambiguous, and has finally decided that he needs more from their relationship than being used when her anger needs managing, so he tells her they aren't doing what she wants anymore. Maria is an emotional wreck and her nomadic upbringing hasn't really prepared her for life in the big wide world where she has to interact with people on a daily basis, but she's trying hard to fit in and be wanted by not allowing anyone but Eric to see what a mess she really is. Her way of dealing with all her insecurities and problems is to either completely hide everything behind a calm face, or to lash out at the only person she can, the only person who knows.... Eric.
Sent on a mission together to retrieve two kidnapped children, Eric forces Maria to start opening up about her life and a lot of surprises are in store for both of them as Eric's questions force Maria to start digging into a past she hasn't had the courage to investigate before - her own - and what she finds rocks her world, but she finally allows those who care about her to give their help and support as the revelations just keep coming.
I don't want to give any spoilers, and I absolutely loved this story, but I would have liked a little more information about the differences between born and made shifters, although the characters seemed to suffer from the same lack of knowledge so I could easily understand the confusion felt by Eric and others. Eric is a sweet character who only wants to be allowed to love, protect and care for Maria, and he eventually gets his wish as the real Maria is uncovered layer by layer throughout the book. This is a story of love, trust and redemption set amidst an on-going war between the two werebear factions of the rightful clan Alpha, Bryan, and the pretender, Gene, who uses fear to hold his position. It has gritty bits, lots of steamy bits, surprising revelations, some humour, good guys and bad guys, as well as the happily ever after we all expect for Eric and Maria and whilst their story is complete, the book does end on something of a cliff-hanger and I really can't wait to read the next one. There are some really interesting characters in this book and I've put the previous four books on my wishlist so that I can catch up on their stories too. I'm sure they'll be just as captivating as this one.
This is my first shrew and Company book and I liked it. Now that I have read the book out of order I will need to go back and read the other stories to bring me up to speed on the Shrews. Eric’s story is book five in this series so there is plenty of reading in store for me.
Eric is a made bear shifter who is still learning about what he has become even after 5 years and things are still changing.
Maria is woman that was altered against her will and the lone survivor of her group from a research study that she had been recommended to by a past boyfriend. The study altered her DNA in an irreversible ways. Maria has emotional issues that she has not resolved that are continuing to cause her problems. When she can no longer coup she seeks out men to cause her pain to help her compartmentalize these issues. She also believes she should not be close to anyone as she cannot always control who she hurts when those walls coming tumbling down.
She has been using Eric secretly for about five years to combat this problem until he decides he can no longer act in this capacity with her. He knows that she needs to confront the issues from her past and to learn to lean on others so that she can stop bottling up these problems before she has a meltdown.
With his help she will find the secrets hidden in her past and maybe a new freedom to love.
Looking forward to reading more about the Shrews, Catamount and the Bears.
Shrew and Company, books 1-3, was my introduction to Holley Trent. I loved it and it remains one of my favorite PNR series, along with her Norseton Wolves and Desert Guardians. She writes amazing, stubborn, flawed, yet strong and insightful, lead characters. While it's possible to read this book without first reading the previous books in the series, there is an overarching storyline, the characters are strongly connected and it will be clearer to begin at the beginning. It is well worth it. In this book Trent features Maria, the last of the unmated Shrews, and Eric, a made bear shifter, innkeeper and the Shrew agent Astrid's brother. Because of staffing shortages, Shrew and Company owner Dana partners them on a mission to rescue two kidnapped bear shifter children and to return the children to their mother. None of the Shrews know that Maria and Eric have been secret lovers for years, or that Eric has reached his limit with their clandestine arrangement and has called it quits. But no one else is available, so they go, traveling in a borrowed RV, trying to make sense of things with her and between them, while avoiding the bear shifters the corrupt bear alpha Gene will be sending to stop them. I received an advanced copy in return for an honest review and have purchased a copy for my e-library. I highly recommend it.
eric and maria, two unlikely people that came together to help each other. rather eric helping out maria. he tried his best to hide his true feelings but even his bear had enough of it and wants maria to be fully theirs. guarding his heart he tells her there won't be anymore hook ups when she's feeling overwhelmed by her anger. but the company she works for has other ideas and puts them together on a RV in order to pick up two bear-children who were kidnapped by their dad. i only picked up this series and not having read the prior books doesn't deter from the story. there where needed enough is told to have a general idea how things came to be and don't feel left out. it was a heartfelt story that mostly revolved around trust and the bravery to take that first step into the unknown.
I had not read the first books in the series, but I can definitely say that I want to and have added them to my TBR list! Since I didn’t have a foundation for this series, it took the first few chapters for me to get caught up on who the major players were. There are several subplots in this story, but the underlying them is the same: You should look out for those who look out for you. It isn’t always easy and sometimes, it can be very scary, but if it’s the right people or person, it’s definitely worth it. I’ve had as many twists and turns in my own life as Maria, and I can definitely understand why she has so many walls up and fights to maintain them even when it makes no sense. I found myself cheering for Eric’s persistence and I’m glad that it everything works out in its own way. After I catch up on the previous four books, I look forward to learning more about Maria’s sister!
I bought Shrew and Company boxed set back in January 2015 and have been following this series since then, the books can be read alone but I would recommend reading from the beginning you will not be sorry you did! This is about Maria Weisz a shrew and company investigator an easy going woman so everyone thinks. Eric Falk has been her secret lover for years, but now Eric is ready to call it quits because Maria can not commit. They have been partnered to bring back two kidnapped bear cubs. Can Maria get past her insecurities to see Eric's love ? Can Eric keep Maria and the cubs safe? Like all the other books I had to read from start to finish in one sitting. I was given a copy for an honest review barwatts@telus.net
I got this in exchange for an honest review, I like Holly work and this one was a joy to read I liked this one a lot even if I have not the full series or the ones before this one but I still got everything and it was amazing there are many secrets action suspense thrill passion sparks that fly everywhere and Maria and Eric are great characters I liked their interactions of how things are between them and change due to events that help change and alter things differently for everyone not just them and things will be uncovered secrets revealed and peace comes to those who solve things I loved it big time amazing plot and story line everything was perfectly written I recommend this to everyone
I'll state up front that I do not care for shifter books. I simply don't understand the fascination with having sex with animals. But there are a few well crafted stores that I have enjoyed... This wasn't one of the enjoyed...This tome is part of a series and you would have to read the first 4 to get an idea of what's going on. I read the very first one in the series, didn't recall that I had already done so(clearly it didn't leave much of an impression)... after the first chapter of this one - I frankly couldn't be bothered.
Well this was a pretty interesting series. Since I haven't read any other books in the series I was a little lost and confused. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the books in the series in the future.
Now this was a fun book, packed full of action and adventure. The authors pulled these characters together through the pages and I couldn't put it down until I was finished. A must read
