4 and a half stars. A great tale.The author (sister of one of my favourite authors Rumer Godden) maintained and built the tension as the book proceeded.

The book describes the relationship between Janey and her nasty nephew Michael, and their friendship of sorts with others they meet. The characters are so well drawn that I have a very clear picture of them and their surroundings, and can imagine very clearly all that takes place as the relationship between Janey and Michael disintegrates.
