A haunting canvas of jealousy, betrayal and atonement that can take its rightful place alongside Fall on Your Knees and Mercy Among the Children.

1970. A tiny fisherman’s shack on the dark Nova Scotia coast, eccentrically covered with folk art images (à la Maud Lewis), which are all the work of a benign, disfigured mute whom the locals dismiss as a misshapen nobody. Miss El

This was a strange book. I honestly don't know what to say about it, because I still don't really think I know what's going on. Yes, of course I understood the plot, it's not very complicated, but the whole book left me with the feeling that I had missed something crucial at the very beginning, so I never got to be part of that club of people who will miss Miss Elva at the end of the book, as the cover so optimistically advertises.

I got this book off the bargain shelf.....sounded interesting, written by a Canadian author and the few pages I skimmed through caught my attention. However, I found the language to be horrible, it was hard to know whether the characters were in the present or past as it jumped back and forth a lot. I'm really not sure what the point of the story was? Your jumped into their lives and a lot of different things happen but you don't ever get to really know any of the characters. An interesting read with some great twists. The similarities to Maud Lewis in the latter part of the book were a bit distracting for me and it took me a bit to get used to how some of the punctuation & writing was done in the beginning, but I got used to it.

Got to page twenty four and closed the book......didn't capture my attention and was not motivated to see if the story got any better. The reading was dry and I didn't find the characters very interesting.

Hard to follow. Managed to keep my attention but usually just because I was confused.

Born in Ontario, educated in Montréal, I currently live and write on Canada’s east coast. In 1994, I published my first novel, ENDLESS BAY (Mercury Press) under the pseudonym, Laura Fairburn.
