There are some cons with this story. There were some easily fixable spelling mistakes and the plot was as transparent as water. But honestly.......WHO CARES! This book was great! John's protective instincts was hot enough to make me want to swoon. Yes, I said swoon. He is not a gentle, easy man. He only smiles maybe three times in the whole book. Suzanne counts his smiles because they are so rare. He's described as a predator, a silent assassin and he practically stalks poor Suzanne. Wait, did I say, "poor Suzanne?" Yeah, right. That girl is one lucky SOB. The sex wasn't very graphic. On the Ellora's Cave grading curve of eroticism, this was a sensual read. However, Lisa Marie Rice built up sexual tension like there was no tomorrow and it was delicious! I wish it could have gone on and on, but I also know this book was done perfectly. It was tightly woven, suspenseful and incredibly sexy. Also for those who might want to know, there was only about 230 pages to this story, so depending on your own inclinations you might want either the ebook version or the paperback version. I like curling up with a good book however, so I'm happy I got the book version. Get this book. Now. (less)

I'm glad I read the third book ("Midnight Angel") first, or I might not have gone on with this series. Don't get me wrong - "Midnight Man" was good, but not GREAT. A couple of things really bothered me about it once I finished: the heroine was never told of the violent death of someone significant in her life; and the HEA (which I'm a sucker for, I have to admit) was summed up, not in one page, not even in one paragraph, but in one SENTENCE! The first book in the Midnight series by Lisa Marie Rice. John Huntington is looking for a new space for his business and decides that Suzanne Barron's renovated factory will work just fine. A former military man, John aka Midnight Man, is now the owner of Alpha Security International. Suzanne is an interior designer.

Another story that could have used a little more character development but I loved it anyway. A spicy little read with a nice plot and a little suspense.

Oh my freakin' dang I liked this book!

Parts of this book were perfection (like the hunter/prey scene- I really dug the writing technique employed there- brilliant). I loved the structure, loved being in John's head for the initial sequences and that the author honed in on the sensual romance with development of the characters as the priority of the story.

I loved the structure, loved being in John's head for the initial sequences and that the author honed in on the sensual romance with development of the characters as the priority of the story.

If anything the suspense is like wallpaper here (we aren't forced into the head of the bad guy and there's not even interaction with him (which I HATED in some books *cough* Dark Lover *cough*). It was just a dash of suspense and it wasn't drawn out or overly-contrived. It was just enough to move the story along without the torture and brutality I have to either slog through or skim in some books (*scratches nose then discreetly points to the entire In Death series*).

It had that short story feel to it where there's not much fluff, just character development, lots of sensuality, and a good little plot.

Bonus: There's no TSTL moments! There's no misunderstandings (unless you count her slipping away and closing the door behind her a misunderstanding... hmmm. Nope, I think John knew exactly what that was about!).

Other reviews have stated the ending was too abrupt, but I thought it was great. *possible spoiler alert* The conflict was resolved and the leads had their "moment". I thought it was perfect- short, but sweet. Another reviewer thought it ridiculous that John can't cook after so many years in the military, but sheesh, if he did that well too, he would be too perfect imo. His only other flaw was that no matter how much he wants to take his time from point A to slot B, he just can't do it :) but he improves!

Things I liked:
I liked that ultimately Suzanne recognized the world as dangerous and he recognized more of its beauty (his appreciation of her design, the color thing, her Christmas traditions, his own desire for foreplay, etc).
I liked that they each had their moments of sacrifice.
I liked that the characters here are almost caricatures of male and female extremes (which may grate as old fashioned or stereotypical), but they embrace those extremes in one another and also bring each other more to the center. It was very appealing to me.

I am glad this book came down in price because I just couldn't bring myself to spend ten bucks or more on an e-book let alone a shortish one, but seven bucks was do-able. If you notice, my friends, its under my loanable tags, so step right up, don't be shy. I can likely only do it once, so don't wait too long.

One other thing, the color "fudge" made me laugh. If you read the book, you'll have to tell me if I'm just being a 12-year old :)(less)

As romance its alright, if you are able to suspend your disbelief as to the amount of time it takes the two to get physical. Basically, Suzanne (h) an interior designer, rents out some rooms to this big, tough, ex-military scary man. Whose name also happens to be John (H). They both feel an intense attraction and have sex against a wall the first night they meet. John also shows his apparent skill with disabling a security alarm with wire and some of his spit. Mmm. 4.5. Good god damn John was alpha to the extreme. I use to search for these types of books after reading Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn (Mitch Rapp) and Lee Childs (Jack Reacher). I love Navy SEALS and military bad asses and an H that is an absolute killing machine who is brought to his knees by his woman.

Lisa Marie Rice writes the best alpha male stories. The men in these books are so tough and mean and damaged, but so sweet and tender to their ladies you can't help but turn the pages at a breakneck speed. I will also save this one to reread around the holidays because like Die Hard, it is a perfect Christmas story about killing terrorists and fucking a totally hot guy. Like Christine Feehan books, there is a pretty set formula, but oh what a formula! I definitly plan to finish both this series...more

When John Huntington a retired SEAL, AKA, Midnight Man, AKA, alpha on steroids who is seriously in touch with both his inner and outer caveman (and inner alpha werewolf what with his supper sensitive senses and elemental nature), meets interior decorator Suzanne Barron and his soon-to-be land lady, it is lust at first sight. There is heat, stalking of prey (Suzanne), clothes are damaged and a particular weapon of mass destruction is used too readily without proper due care or warning ...ouch!!

Seriously, I can't believe that Suzanne didn't need medical help or at least walk bow legged for a while... I mean come on! She was practically a virgin.

So when bad guys mess with his lady love, this alpha caveman has licence to use the modern equivalent of a club and introduce a couple of earth's lower life forms to their creator.

I really liked Suzanne and John's story and how they complemented each other so well. I also liked the lack of misunderstanding or games between them after he became her protector, it was refreshing.

There was a hilarious moment where Suzanne was trying to explain decorating according to energy flow and the wind, AkA, feng shui, and the look on the supper alpha men's faces...OMG! It’s as if she turned into a performing / tap dancing seal! Lol!!

Although I enjoyed reading this story, two things bothered me about it. The fact that something happened to someone close to Suzanne that John didn't want her to find out about just yet (which made sense at the time) but she never found out anyway or even wonder if that person was ok. In that respect, I found Suzanne's character to be self-involved (or too distracted with John's animal magnetism and love making which can fry any woman's brain cells) because she left everything up to John and that's how he likes it.

Secondly, the ending was too abrupt and left me wanting and disappointed with the lack of proper closure.

This was a very hot sensual read full of sexual tension.

While Midnight Angel is my favorite of the Midnight trilogy, there is something about John Huntington...sigh! Sure, he's a neanderthal, a bit mysoginistic even, but he's also a true Alpha among Alpha males. (view spoiler)[Again, my complaints are about the main female character, Suzanne. I couldn't get myself to like her and I tried, honestly. Aside from the usual "running away from things that make you feel good" and "I don't 'do' relationships" plot devices, there were just a couple things that she did that almost made me close the book and give up.

She sees a light coming from her office at night. Her thought process: OMG Fire! Maybe I should run into the room and check it out! But wait, it's actually a flashlight. Instead of fleeing immediately, let me take a peek into the room to see who's stumbling around with a flashlight! Oh look, they have a gun. Let me now go over, in detail, the various things I've previously read on burglars and them not having guns. He must not want to burgle me. So he must want to kill me. PANIC!
And I'm just sitting there wanting to scream "BITCH, RUUUN!"

The would-be killer's arterial spray is spattered across her walls, yet she can't figure out why she needs to pack a suitcase before leaving what is now a crime scene.
She dwells on it twice, but still doesn't understand why in the world she'd need a change of clothes. I assume she believes that after giving her statement down at the station, she'll just return home and go to bed by walking around the puddle of blood in her hallway. No biggie, whatevs.

Aside from those two horribly stupid moments that made me want to kill her myself, most of this book was full of her inane thoughts that came at the most inappropriate times. And I don't mean that she was like "Oh god, I need to stop thinking about random things and focus!" (Although she did come across pretty poorly during her initial statement to Bud because she couldn't focus on anything but John... I didn't like that.) I mean that the author made the character basically infodump random nonsense when she should have been thinking about, oh I dunno, not dying? Or perhaps, dare I say, talking? Paragraph after paragraph of her thinking about shit that doesn't matter AT ALL and isn't interesting or entertaining enough to justify it being written. I understand our hero, John, is the strong and silent type, but there was very little dialogue between them and a whole lot of irrelevant infodumps.

The villain was obvious to me right after John questioned her at the hideaway. Simply because the situation was never mentioned again until the big reveal. (hide spoiler)]

In summary, Suzanne wasn't likeable for me and I felt she was pretty stupid. John was a good hero, but a little too quiet. The infodumps were mostly irrelevant and felt like filler. And the villain was too obvious. I forgot the character's names immediately after I closed the book and nothing stuck with me to remember this book by. It was a very quick, very light read.

And the way John commands all of her senses right from the very first meet itself has Suzanne ready to flee from the intensity of her response to a man that she barely knows from Adam. However, from the moment John possesses her up against the wall during their very first date means that there is no turning back for Suzanne who has envisioned a very different process by which she would fall in love with the man she would share the rest of her life with. And when danger of the life threatening variety comes calling out of nowhere, it is to John that Suzanne turns towards who pulls no punches in ensuring that the woman who rocks his world in more ways than one would remain safe as long as he is capable of breathing.

The Midnight series tells stories of uber alpha males and the dainty yet strong heroines who are actually damsels in distress the said alphas race to rescue. With mind numbing passion of the explosive variety which is very well done, Midnight Man delivers on all counts and I loved reading every little bit of how two very different people find their soul mates in each other in the most unusual of circumstances.

I fell in love with John when I read the following part of the book where his burgoening feelings towards Suzanne is vocalized for the very first time in the story.

And I definitely loved the ending of the story though there was no epilogue in this one which somehow doesn't end up feeling lacking.
Recommended for fans of Lisa Marie Rice/Elizabeth Jennings.

I read this book back when it first came out and I fell in love with former Navy SEAL Commander John Huntington and the woman that steals his heart Suzanne Barron. This is the story that put Lisa Marie Rice on my must buy list. It is difficult to write much about this story and not give away any of the important parts. Well, it wasn't the worst book that I've ever read...but it sure as hell wasn't good and I'm very glad it was free. My comments as I was reading it:

59% of the way in: "Hot but unbelievable hero, likeable but easily led heroine. Quite a few sexist statements made by hero and his cop friend, heroine says "they're right". To be honest, I didn't really know what genre this book was supposed to because I hurriedly skipped the blurb. All I saw was that a recommended author had a recommended book as a freebie on Amazon Kindle *bows my head in shame.* I was under the impression that Ms. Force writes romantic suspense, and so was expecting that. What I expected and what I got were two vastly different thing. What I read was....weird. Let me see if I can explain.

All I saw was that a recommended author had a recommended book as a freebie on Amazon Kindle *bows my head in shame.* I was under the impression that Ms. Force writes romantic suspense, and so was expecting that. What I expected and what I got were two vastly different thing. What I read was....weird. Let me see if I can explain.

The basic plot is this: Retired SEAL/Black Ops/highly-trained-and-deadly John Huntington has started his own security business and goes to hire office-and-home space from Suzanne Barron, interior designer with space to rent. Immediately John sees Suzanne, and I mean immediately, he decides he absolutely has to have her. Fair enough. Suzanne, also, by the end of that first meeting, is immeasurably aroused by this dark dangerous guy. Also, fair enough.

John asks - no, tells Suzanne they are going on a date. And that is the beginning of my issues with the book. Throughout the plot, John tells Suzanne what is going to happen next. I found creepy instead of sexy. The sex starts and doesn't stop. Over and over we are regaled with scene after scene of John and Suzanne, with many descriptions of the magnitude of John's er...you know, and the verve with which copulation was taking place.

Don't get me wrong, the plot wasn't bad; it was progressing well enough. Then all of a sudden, we had some attempts to weave in a pseudo-suspense, pseudo-romantic plot. I was confused. The pseudo-romance, although, IMO, not authentic, fit in better than the pseudo-suspense. That was an utter fail.

So there you have it. It was weird. I can't tell if it is because of my misconstrued expectations or not. I don't know if I would call it erotic romance. The "erotic" was there, but not the "romance", and I most certainly would not call this suspenseful in any way shape or form.

But the writing was not bad at all, and excellent for a freebie. I will definitely be checking out more of Ms. Force's work, but I will be sure to check for romantic suspense next time. Heh.(less)

Shelves: erotic-romance

Fast paced read with very likable hero and heroin. I started this book because I need to treat myself once in a while to a pure alpha male and the book delivered. Even better than expected. Despite the hero being pure alpha he was no jerk and treated the heroin like spun glas! The author exploits the very basics of a man/woman relationship which culminates in a very primeaval ending. Which is in it's way quite satisfying.

I really liked this book. It was a nice fast paced read packed full of romance, scorching sex, and tons of suspense. John is fresh out of the Navy and starting his new security buisness. Suzanne is loaning him out half of her building for his business. Within the first meeting the sexual vibes are on fire and within hours they are in bed or I should say up against a wall together. This one is free today for Kindle on Amazon...1/21/13. Don't know how long it will stay free. I went and got it, because all I have is the PB copy I've had for years and years...

I love this book, just love it. What a man, what a hot story! The things John would do for (and to) Suzanne. Midnight Man and Midnight Run actually run on concurrent timelines. The 3rd book, Midnight Angel is also a great read.
