Charlie and Lola- But excuse me that is my book
By Lauren Child
The Charlie and Lola books have taken the world by storm in recent times extending from its Disney channel fame and also previous children’s books written by Lauren Child. The story commences when Lola and Charlie want to go to the library so Lola can take out her favourite book "Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies". However the book Lola always gets is not there and here is where the plot goes a little wr...more
Lauren Child’s ‘But excuse me that is my book’ is part of the popular children’s TV series ‘Charlie and Lola.’ It follows the life of big brother Charlie and his little sister Lola. In this particular book, Charlie and Lola go to the library to take out Lola’s favourite story ‘Bugs, Beetles and Butterflies’, but she is disappointed when another child has already taken it out.

This is a great book to read to kindergartners at the beginning of a school year. This book is all about sharing library books and understanding that there are many options for choosing a book!
Many of my kindergarteners are still crying when they do not get the book they want because someone else got it first. This book helps them understand the library as a place where share and take turns.

This book would be a fun read aloud in the library because it talks about how a library works, and the rules of the library, as well as the joy of finding books on all sorts of topics. The author also does a good job of capturing a young child's obsession with a specific book and reluctance to try something new. But, her older brother Charlie is patient and helps her find a new topic to read.

The book is great for Kindergarten orientations. Like most books in this series it has redundant parts that I tend to skip, and I sometimes have to translate words from Australian (cheeky = silly). But the kids are amused and it covers some very important concepts about libraries and finding books. It is also very easy to ask meaningful follow-up questions: Do you also have a favorite book? (text to self). Are Charlie and Lola real children, or make-believe characters? (fact/fiction). Whe...more
This is a lovely book for young children. It is filled with colourful, vibrant illustrations with very few words. I enjoyed the way Lauren Child explores the topic of going to the library. She explains in a fun way what the library is and the concept of the library, for example, taking out books and bringing them back. Lola’s big brother Charlie explains to her about the hundreds of books available in the library, by listing them out. Lola however wants a particular book and she explains why she...more
This book is almost as funny as the episode of the television series on which it's based, and in my vernacular that translates to "very funny"! I really like the fact that Lauren Child is directly making the final decisions and edits on what makes it into the show and what makes it into these storybook adaptations of the show, and the influence of her light touch can definitely be seen in the pages of this book. Reading this was a wholly enjoyable experience, and I would give it at le...more
Charlie and Lola are new to me with Little Cherub. She latched on to the book at the library because she has seen bits of the TV series and recognised the characters. I'm not keen on spin-off books from TV shows, but - like Thomas the Tank Engine - this is one of those book series that later spawned the TV version.

Not my favorite Charlie and Lola book for a little one but I got a chuckle from the story parallel twisty turn at the end. My kid didn't think it was all that clever on the page but we have since found the video online which makes her laugh lots more. It's hard to read a book solely about a little girl temper tantrum, no matter the setting of the book (could learn lots about the library system) or how familiar the characters (oh, Lola is not always like that, right?)
These pictures and the format of the book always seem like they'll be a turn-off tome. But I can't help liking both. And liking Charlie and Lola. Lola is very much like many children I come across, and it's funny to see her come around. And nice to see how patient and helpful Charlie is trying to be. I especially love that he's conducting a Reference Interview with a very certain (aka stubborn) person. Been there and done that--lots!!

How cute is Lola? She wants her most favorite book from the library, but when she can't find it a happy day turns to disaster! But, how long does it take for a little one to find a new favorite book? Not too long!
Similar to real life experience, I loved Lola's absolute disaster cringe as she realizes that her favorite book is going home with some other little girl. Thankfully, she has big brother Charlie there to save the day!

Big brother Charlie helps his sister Lola try something new and check out unfamiliar books rather than her one "favorite". I liked the mixed media illustrations but I didn't warm up to the kid characters. Maybe I need to watch the Disney channel version! I liked the theme but found the characters too crudely drawn (as in quickly sketched).
This is a story about a little girl loves one particular book. She doesn’t think anything can top it. Her older brother Charlie helps his little sister discover another book in the library. This story is great for children who don’t want to try something new. This book has great illustrations and wonderful ways that the author played with the words to show expression.

Oh this was so sweet and cute. I was reminded of my own days of loving certain library books (the horse ones) and was also reminded of my boyfriend's story of trying to keep the Little House on the Prairie books for as long as possible. So glad my co-worker recommended this one.
The great thing about this story is that it deals with a subject all library users at some point have felt -- the sense that the library is theirs. As a librarian this is something hoped for but for the user it can be a shock to realize they are sharing with A LOT of people.

I believe this is my favorite Charlie and Lola book. I am certain we have checked it out from the library at least twice, and read it while visiting the library at least one other time. My four-year-old adores Charlie and Lola.
This book is cataloged incorrectly. I am reviewing: Quien Teme al Libro Feroz?(Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Book?, NOT But Excuse me That is my book).
It's always great to have spanish versions of good children's books.

these books are great! the writing is wonderful and is just how kids think and act! ...the little cartoon made from these books is great too (I just love the english accents!)...
The kids thought this was a 4 star; I'd give it more like 3.5 since I got tired of saying the Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies title. I did like the message of trying new books.

Another hit with my two year old. The writing is fun to read aloud, and the illustrations are nice.

ok, so lola goes to the library to get her book about bugs and another girl is checking it out. do you remember that feeling when you favorite book was out? (hey, who took my courduroy book, mommie!??) lola has to learn that the library is not just for her and there are other cool books to read. this is a great book for a very verbose 3 yo, or anyone between the ages of 4-7.

I'm a fan of Charlie and Lola, and this one makes a great read aloud for kids when you are tournig the library or talking to them about what the library has to offer. Lola has her heart set on one bug book, but Charlie the ever patient and clever brother, introduces her to other possiblities.

These kids are hilarious and adorable. You've never met a big brother better than Charlie or a little sister more spunky than Lola. Read them in a British accent for the best possible time.
This is OK, although I got slightly fed up with the unvarying "I said, she said" narrative.[return][return]Now I notice it's based on a TV series, which doesn't surprise me.

Lauren Child grew up in Wiltshire as the middle child of three sisters and the daughter of two teachers. She has always been interested in the many aspects of childhood, from gazing into toy shop windows to watching American children's shows from the 1960s. After attending two Art Schools, where Lauren admits that she did not learn much, she travelled for six months, still unsure about which caree...more
