Spoiler alert! Read at your own hazard. I will take no responsibility for making you feel sadened by my review, nor possibly bored out of your mind. I do however take all due credit for being a sarcastic smartass even when I in fact like a piece of literature. Which in this case I do.

"Deep are the wounds that civil strife inflicts." The words of the Roman poet Marcus Annaeus Lucanus return to haunt me in Betrayal, just as they did in the Dark Nest trilogy. Once again charac...more

This is a good example of the expanded universe, and a good example of author Allston's contributions, but nothing to write home about.

Best thing about this book: a fast-moving plot that never stagnates. Nice balance, as Allston usually does, of balancing emphasis between action sequences and characterization. But unfortunately in this one, both those areas are somewhat lacking. There is no sparkle here.

Another positive note: Jacen Solo once again displays his tendency ...more

I realize that I am reading this book (the first in a series of 9) rather late in the game. I have only recently re-discovered my love for the Star Wars franchise, after all. However, I found the book to be interesting. My only problem, however, is that since I've joined the game so late, I am unfamiliar with many of the main characters. For example, the book does talk about main villains Thracken Sal-Solo and Lumiya as if I should know exactly who they are. Yes, there are some clues as to ...more

It has all the bravado a Star Wars novel should: dramatic relationships drastically affected by the hardships of galactic war, cinematic battles so vivid you can see the glow of the lightsaber cuts, and true respect for the charactes that populate this universe, from their witty banter to their amazing skills. Amid the author's novel personal sci-fi ideas that decorate the various new cultures and technologies we meet are some truly realistic family struggles as our cast is split by a newly spar...more

After I first read this book, my immediate reaction was, "I've read fan fiction better than this!" It took Traviss' and Denning's next installments to get me comfortable with the idea of the change in Jacen. Looking back, it makes sense after his capture by the Vong and 5 year journey studying different Force techniques. It took a while, but the book finally grew on me with the witty exchanges and character interactions. I particularly liked this little exchange:

I stopped reading new Star Wars books after the first few New Jedi Order, but when I saw this one for sale used I thought I'd try it, since it was a new series and I've always liked Aaron Allston. Solo Command and Starfighters of Adumar standing out among all others for their laugh-out-loud humour.

This book was slightly better then the last few Star Wars I've tried, including a number of amusing references to previous events, both in-universe and out (Tycho asked, "Is Han-"...more

I have come back to my Star Wars books after a long hiatus. I never even got to finish the New Jedi Order series because things always go in the way. So, with the release of newest Star Wars book, Outcast, I thought I should read the series just before that book. Now, I am a Star Wars geek. I can tell which version of the movies I'm watching when other can't. I have four lightsabers. But most importantly for this review, I always try to get the first editon first printing of every book that come...more

It's weird to read about Han and Leia and Luke in their 50s (still running around fighting evil like they're back on Hoth). The exploration of light/dark sides and Sith vs. Jedi is interesting, until the climax, when the whole thing really, really tanks. Just abysmal. Maybe the most stupid, illogical character decision of any Star Wars story ever (except George Lucas thinking Jar Jar Binks was a good idea).

This book was wordy if nothing else. I might even compare it's level of vocabulary to "Atlas Shrugged". This book gives one an excellent visualization of the events happening in the book, because of it's perfect detail and the authors formidable descriptive powers. It's a highly immersive and well-written book, but really, it's somewhee in the neghborhood of 600 pages, and it took me months to read, and unless you read very fast, then I wouldn't reccomend it as something to go out of y...more

Coming to this series several years late, and even knowing the big plot points later in the series, I have to say I really liked this book. I'll always have a genuine love of Aaron Allston because of the great Wraith Squadron books, but this one's solid. Really like Jacen a lot, even though he's the bad guy. I like the path he starts, and though I've heard it's not followed through well, maybe it'll read better as I get to it.

Also, two solid Vader stories from Karen Traviss are ...more

In this book you learn about how Jacen Solo, head of the Galatic Alliance Guard, travels on his way to the dark side. Also in it You meet others of Luke Skywalkers family and students. Some of his family are Mara Jade Skywalker and his son Ben Skywalker. His students are Saba Sabatine, Corran Horn and many others. Finally you hear about the Solo family conflict invoving Han's, Jacen's, Leia's, and Jaina's cousin Trackan Sal-Solo and his robotic son Anakin Sal-Solo. Also Jacen starts turning...more

Alliston does a good job delivering witty banter and gets all of the characterizations right. You really get the sense that the traditional star wars holdovers really know each other like the back of their own hands and their interactions are a joy to read.

I had a couple of problems, however. This transformation that is happening to Jacen just seems so abrupt. I realize that the writers of the EU have been planning this departure for some time, laying seeds of it along the way, ...more

Betrayal was one of those books I'd started into a while back, but never gotten back to. Well, this book is part of the Legacy of the Force series, and it ended recently. Based off several people's reviews of the series, I decided to pick the book up again.

First of all, I just have to say this - and it might sound a bit corny, but... there was way too much talking going on, and not enough action happening. I mean, this is Star Wars, right? Of course there has to be diplomacy somewher...more

Recommends it for: Star Wars Fans who have already read other Star Wars books.
This book is the first book in a nine book series. The series is written by three different authors, each taking turns writing. This makes for some interesting continuity, but I'll talk more about that in my review of the second book.

Aaron Allston is one of my favorite Star Wars authors. He is very witty, and is one of the only Star Wars authors that can make me laugh out loud. I've never read anything he's written other than Star Wars books, but I would recommend all of them. ...more

Recommends it for: only diehard fans of Star Wars tie-in novels
Reading Star Wars tie-in novels are one of my great guilty pleasures. I think it was 2002 when I slogged through a great stack of them, laughing at the hokey philosophy, the random apostrophes in names, etc. My favorites were always the X-wing books by Allston, due to my longstanding love of fighter pilots in fiction and the very small amounts of Jedi ridiculousness, and it's Allston behind this first novel of a new series within the extended universe.

As a whole it doesn't do much fo...more

Legacy of the Force is the most recent series in the Expanded Universe - its set 40 or so years after Return of the Jedi.

As with most 9 book series, there are ups and downs, and some books are more coherent than others. This first book is probably smack in the middle of the parabola. In the scheme of things, its almost totally exposition. Its fairly well written, but sometimes reverts to the hokey dialogue that weaker Star Wars books seem to suffer from.

I was really burned on Star Wars novels after the New Jedi Order. I even tried to redeem them in my eyes with Outbound Flight, but it was a stinker, too. So I approached Betrayal with hesitation. It turned out to be really good--maybe LucasArts really learned their lessons with the last few years of crap. It focused less on a formula plot and more on characters, and for the first time ever, I was able to draw contemporary parallels in the philosophy and politics. I hope the rest of this series k...more

I thought this was a nice start of the new series. It's going to continue Jacen's exploration of the Force. I'm excited to see where and how this goes. Plus I want to see how he handles Luke's reactions. I thought that was one of the best parts of the New World Order series with the Vongs was Jacen's maturity and growth through the Force. I really liked this book and how it flipped around to different worlds to keep up with the characters. It wasn't a whole chapter about just one thing but it wa...more

This series took the New Jedi Order cast to an all to familiar level. I felt that the story was engaging, the characters well developed and the story line quick, but it fell into the same Starwars trap. While a New Jedi Order challenged the status quo and soared to new heights, this story failed to live up to the gigantic bar that its predecessor set.

This could be an interesting series. There's some nice groundwork laid - it will be a matter of how it plays out. It sort of bothers me that Han Solo must be something like 70 years old and is still acting like a man in his mid-30s as far as abilities and reflexes, but maybe a long time ago in a galaxy far far away the elderly were a lot more spry.

Not immaculate, but a really good read if Star Wars is your thing. Also it's a very good jumping in point to the vast sea that is the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Though it has lots of ties to other EU plots, it is the first of the post-RojJ books to really have the full prequel trilogy to reference, and in my opinion it does a pretty damn fine job at doing this. Also wanna mention the plot is a nice balance between all walks of Star Wars Universe if star ship battles aren't your thing just wait...more

This book was awesome!!!!!!!! I really couldn't put it down because it had me hooked from start to finish. I bought this book and the next two Legacy of the Force books used at the library for 50 cents each. After reading them and the fourth book, which I had bought at the Stanwood book store a few years later, I decided to read the rest of the Legacy of the Force series. Now the Legacy of the Force series is one of my favorite Star Wars series.
Jazzie
I thought it was pretty slow moving, some parts were down right boring, although I suppose they might be of interest in the future. I especially liked the ending and the dark forces / conflict, etc... I have also realized that I prefer the drama and the dialogue more than the "action" descriptions in a novel.

I found the plot of this first novel in the Legacy of the Force series to be a bit forced (no pun intended!) in order to set up the main arc of the series: the conversion of a major character of the Expanded Universe from a Jedi to a Sith. Still, individual scenes were well written and felt like Star Wars.

What a great story arc this is! I like the new characters introduced in the last story arc, but now in a Star Wars setting. It's very interesting to see the problems when a small group of people, even just a family, are so powerful that their small issues can affect an entire galaxy.

really brilliant start to another promising series.

this is dark and clever and oh so frighteningly convincing.

one of the better books in the EU - and the start to probably the best storyline - certainly the mos epic
