Criminal Mind: Killer Profile, by Max Allan Collins
Chicago is plagued by a series of seemingly unrelated murders. A couple shot to death in a car. Two women strangled in a park. A male body found in a barrel. Because the crimes are spread out over the city, the different police departments haven't seen any connection, and who would see a connection between such crimes, anyway?
The BAU, or the Behavioral Analysis Unit, does. When one of the members of the unit sees crime scene photos, he knows th...more

Criminal Minds is one of the best shows on TV in my opinion. The cast meshes well, it only got better when Mandy Patinkin left and Joe Montagna came into play.
That being said, I expected quite a bit from a book, and it would be tough to re-create that cast dynamic as well.
Max Allan Collins did a great job at this re-creating, I could easily hear each distinct voice, and nuance from the characters. The dialog was written as it would have been spoken in the show, and the descriptions were pretty s...more

In this Criminal Minds tie-in novel, a copycat serial killer is plaguing Chicago - only instead of doing the "normal" copycat thing and copying a single killer, this particular UNSUB is paying homage to all the textbook masters (Bundy, Dahmer etc) - and Rossi ought to know - he helped write the textbooks. And it is, of course, up to our favourite BAU team to help find and stop the guy.

An easy read. It gets me through til the next season of Criminal Minds comes on. This one was a bit easier to follow than the second novel, which I read first. The characters and setting were more clearly explained. I have to admit I got really tired of hearing how good looking everyone was--yes, we know the characters of the show are abnormally good-looking, especially statistically speaking, for that sort of job...but being reminded of it constantly was annoying. The author overly describes ev...more

This novel felt like it was very simply written. I felt like anyone who has read a few crime novels or even seen Criminal Minds could have written this, it had no style whatsoever and in places where there could have been scope for some great shocks and twists and turns the situation was simply explained.
The storyline was good, and the characters too but this is owing to them being developed in the TV series, not to any skill on the author's part. Also, probably 25-30 full pages in total would b...more

I preferred Killer Profile to Jump Cut.
Liked:
+Plot: The plot was better. There was more twists and depth to it, although, I had guessed who the Unsub was the minute he began talking.
+Characters: The characters were more in characters in this book, in my opinion and I really liked that because I am very protective of the Criminal Minds cast.
Disliked:
-Cliche: The cliche of the Law Enforcement not willing to work with the BAU is one that in this book comes to play and it wasn't done that well.

For fans of the show, this is a good book. However if you're a hardcore fan of the show and have watched it from the beginning, I don't know if I'd bother reading it because they did this case in one episode (can't remember which off the top of my head) so it's kind of anti-climatic. It was still a fun read and any crime book like that I'll take :) Plus Max Allan Collins knows how to write crime. He's written several CSI franchise (I know of at least both of CSI: Las Vegas, and CSI: Miami) as we...more
My favorite agent wasn't in this book as much. I almost put it down but then I decided to keep reading until he reappeared on the scene. Oh and I was (and I think the actress that plays her should be too) slightly offended by the description of Penelope Garcia. They call her pleasantly plump. I think I'd rather be called fat than pleasantly plump. ;) I like her character on the show and I especially like that she's actually a regular sized person instead of Hollywood thin.

Killer Profile by Max Allan Collins
I'm a big fan of Criminal Minds, and when I realised there were accompanying books I couldn't wait to purchase them. As I knew already, Collins does a good job at translating the characters to books, a task I wouldn't wish on anybody. It was great reading new stories about some of my favourite characters. Overall, they're a good, easy read that require practically no imagination because you already know the people and their history, but they're nothing special.

Picked up because it was part of this month's paperback subscription shipment, I'm a _Criminal Minds_ fan (due to Elizabeth Bear's commentaries on it) and because I wanted something non-demanding this week.
It's not a horrible book. And if it were a book about a random group of profilers solving cases, it would be very pleasant airplane reading.
But it lacks a lot of the charm of the series, in part because it's got to do a lot of info-dumping about characters. (It's a tie-in novel. I can't imag...more

This was a nice reading and it truly shows progress in terms of the writing.
Sometimes I felt the characters a bit OOC, but it generally gave the whole idea of the show and the interaction I'm used to as a fan of it.
The plot was well thought and I really liked what he did with it; although I'm not really a fan of stories who take 95% of the story and are later wrapped up in a couple of pages, the story was nicely finished.

If you're a fan of the show (I am!) then I think you will enjoy this book. The book is based on the television series Criminal Minds and has the same characters and same plot idea. I think that if I weren't such a fan of the show, then I might find the characters a little flat, but because I already know them it wasn't a problem for me. It's a quick, fun read that kept me entertained on my daily commute.
There's a serial killer in the Chicago area recreating the murders of famous serial killers from the past. I'm not sure what it says about me that I actually knew about 95% of them! I really enjoyed the book as it's just as good as the tv show. The author seems to have captured the essence of Criminal Minds although it would be more interesting to use the literary format to go somewhere or do something the show can't.
Wow. This is a pretty badly written book. Still, I'm so addicted to the show right now (watching on DVD) that I'm enjoying it anyway. Not quite sure why every person's outfit has to be described in detail in every scene (but every tie so far has been red & blue striped!).
Pretty standard for this sort of book, I guess. Ending was pretty rushed. OK for a brain candy read.

Fun retread of the TV series. Love Collins descriptions - you can see the scenes from the script as the members of the BAU jump out in front of you as you read. This one is about a copycat killer who mimics 20th century killers like Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, and more famous serial killers, all located in the Chicago area. Great read on a raining day.
Criminal Minds is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. That's the reason I picked this book from the store. I really wanted to know more about each characters in the team like what're they thinking at that time.
The story line is good and interested. It has a lot of information about the killings, the serial killers that killer in this book mimic, and the profile the team come out. For characters, I love the team even more. Max Allan Collins did a great job for bringing each characters in to...more
