Posted December 1, 2008, 1:48 PM EST: There's not much to say about this book. It is a very typical Alex Cross novel from the extremely prolific James Patterson. It follows the usual formula- Cross is trying to get out of the murder business only to get sucked in by a particularly twisted serial killer. In this case, the serial killer is the D.C. Audience Killer, who does just as his name implies: he kills dramatically before an audience. Added to the mix is the escape of Cross's nemesis, Kyle C...more

Why oh why do I continue to do this to myself? Lots and lots of white space. Super dad, super cop, super doc Alex solves the mystery but only when he isn't chasing his new girlfriend and trying to find time to have sex with her. OK - I am not a prude (I really enjoy good sex scenes in fiction) but this is getting ridiculous.....When Patterson first conceived the Alex Cross character he is what drew readers in - he was an excellant cop, doc, and a good single dad. Now I think Patterson just keeps...more

I think I've finally realized that I've outgrown the Alex Cross series. That, or JP is getting lazy and sloppy as he keeps cranking out the novels. Predictable plot - yet another over-the-top genius criminal mastermind is committing terrible and sensational murders. Once again, Cross gets sucked in to helping and questions his life's direction. Once again, his love life is disgustingly described. I'm not offended at all by it, just grossed out. I hate how Patterson writes the "romanti...more

Recommends it for: Alex Cross Fans
Washington DC detective Alex Cross is back in this 13th book of the series, and this time he is being targeted by two psychopathic killers. The Audience Killer and his demand for attention through his gruesome spectacles would be more than enough to bring Alex out of retirement. To complicate matters, The Mastermind, Kyle Craig, escaped from prison and has promised revenge. Although the mystery and suspense ended fairly early for me, “Double Cross” is still another fast paced page turner that we...more

The 13th instalment in the Alex Cross series of interwoven plots featuring two outrageous killers luring our familiar well-liked characters Alex Cross and his new love Brianna Stone into an interesting spin of events full of twists and turns. Like all of Patterson's writings, this novel is short, has punchy chapters, lots of action and a little sex to make things titillating.

The story begins when Kyle Craig (a villain resurrected from a previous novel) breaks out of a Super-max jail ...more

Alex Cross is back, and he has double the trouble. It's hard enough tracking one bad-ass serial killer, but two? It's enough to give one a migraine.

As usual, James Patterson creates a complex plot filled with twists and turns, hills and dales, hairpin curves, and sheer drops. There's a reason Patterson is a best-selling author, and honey, it ain't bad writing.

Alex Cross is building his private practice, but finds himself sucked back into police work when he visists a murd...more

Not as good as some of his others.

A killer sentenced to life in prison at the SuperMax facility in Florence, Colorado, is somehow linked to killers on an unusual crime spree in D.C. The killer is known as the Audience Killer, and it is not known that the killer has a partner.

The sentenced killer, Kyle Craig, former FBI agent and friend of Cross's, breaks out of prison, unstated but evidently with the help of the Audience Killer, by exchanging places in the prison with his att...more

Double Cross by James Patterson (pp. 389)

The 13th Alex Cross novel from James Patterson is what you’d expect. A new serial killer. Alex struggling to find a normal life but craving the puzzle of a new mystery. Crazy murder scenarios and high-spectacle cat-and-mouse games between the suspect and the police department.

Kyle Craig is back looking to taunt his long time nemesis. The D.C. Audience Killer is new and added to make a sort-of crime drama love triangle between C...more

This is the first James Patterson book I have read because I saw that he is twice on the Amazon best seller list and I wanted a piece of the action. I wasn't a quarter of the way into it when I wondered why he was there. As I kept reading, that feeling grew but I persisted because I felt I must be missing something that thousands of other readers were getting. I was utterly unconvinced by his characters and the story line, the latter doing a very poor job, or no job at all, of explaining how the...more

This is a book in the Alex Cross Series! I loved this book and I love the way James Patterson writes. He writes like people normally talk, not formal and his grammar isn’t always correct. He’s extremely descriptive which helps create a good picture in your head. Though the novel is filled with very gruesome murders and some adult content, so squeamish readers be aware! The book includes a murderer that is obsessed with public murders that get him the most attention. While there’s also a murderer...more

I am about 1/2 way thru... I will withhold my final judgment until it’s over. But…

I fell in love with this series a few years ago when I started listening to 'London Bridges.' I was immediately taken by the two readers of the story and loved the fact that Alex had his own voice and the bad guy had his own (Peter Fernandez has brought Alex to life for most of this series. Maybe most splendidly in ‘Cross Country’)

I know most diehard fans of the series insist that books c...more

This book is terrible. I feel very bad for getting caught up in the story at all, and I was only about 10% interested. I think I got a little stupider as I listened to this book. It is supposed to be TV that rots your brain and books that smarten you up a bit, but experiencing this book is basically the equivalent of watching a couple of mediocre episodes of Criminal Minds or some show like that.
This book also convinces me even more that the "young adult" designation means not m...more

THE GOOD
Alex Cross is a likable character. He's morally solid, a good father, and an amazing detective. James Patterson weaves an interesting story that keeps a snappy pace, and he's careful to always leave his options open for future books. The newly revamped "Cross" series of books seems to be Patterson's attempt at recapturing the "magic" of the era of the early Alex Cross books. He's somewhat successful at this; they are certainly a step up from what he was pump...more

Double Cross falls short of being top-notch work by Patterson's standards as far as I'm concerned. There are parts that are a bit slow, and the twist is given away far too early in the story, which seriously weakens the ending, and the ending is the most important part of a story. Patterson's material is usually memorable, something that you don't forget about, because he is just that kind of writer. He knows how to write terrifically haunting stories that completely shock you at the end, but Do...more

Ok Mr. Patterson...you've figured out that the lot of us are dumb cattle and you could shit in a bag and slap mysterious cover art and a promise of suspense and mystery and the mass will buy it. Damn you...you're right. I literally opened this book and KNEW it was a Patterson turd and I read it anyways.

I'm only slightly positive that at this point in his illustrious career (and don't get me wrong, I do enjoy me some Patterson for a quick, mindless read here & there) he might be taki...more

How would you like it if two of the most psycho, masterminded, killers in the world come together to target you as their next victim? That’s the theme by renowned writer James Patterson in his book Double Cross. Alex Cross is a retired man how comes out of retirement to catch two crazy convicts. It is about a former FBI agent who’s has a mutation in himself, which changes him into a maniac. As he is sentenced to death at ADX Florence, the most secure prison in the world. The daunting challenge h...more

I was caught between three and four stars. I decided to go with the higher for a couple of reasons, but the main being that I enjoyed this book and the second being it was a quick read. I enjoyed the twists and turns involved and I liked the way Patterson introduced his characters. I also enjoyed seeing the story from two perspectives - the protagonist, Alex Cross and the antagonist, The Audience Killer.

Needless to say, this book was about Alex Cross, who after trying to leave the...more

This book is the thirteenth installent in the Alex Cross series, but only the first that I have read.

Alex Cross has just started to adjyst to a normal life away from his old ways of solving mysteries and working on cases. He has three kids, work as a therapist, and a girlfriend, Bree. While on vacation with Alex, Bree is suddenly called to investigate a gruesome murder. The murder had been staged for a crowd to see and was done in horrific fashion. Alex gets caught into the investig...more

I haven't read an Alex Cross book in awhile so it was nice to get back to the DC Psychiatrist/Detective. Alex is called out of retirement when his girlfriend, Det. Brianna Stone is called in on a murder that is eerily reminiscent of the murders of The Mastermind, Kyle Craig, Cross's former FBI colleague now on death row in a maximum security prison in Colorado. The copy cat is soon nicknamed "DCAK" (DC Audience Killer for his need to have an audience for each of his murders). But th...more

A fan of the Alex Cross series, I liked the earlier Patterson books
which didn't take so much for granted, as of to say--I'm the best-seller writing machine, so if you're not with who all the characters are and what their realtionships are, you'll just have to catch up on your own. Sure the story is exciting, but sometimes authors set their craft aside to become this corporate entity to grind out books for cash. Yes, it's a business but even in your typical TV soap opera, you can still get ...more

A stronger book than some of the recent ones. I've loved some of the cross series but have felt ripped off with others as they just seem to lead on to another book, however the good ones are good enough to put up with the bad ones.

3 1/2 stars. An Alex Cross mystery in which the now-retired profiler is now working as a psychiatrist in private practice and is dealing with two serial killers. Kyle Craig, Cross's former colleague in the FBI (the Mastermind, in 2001's Violets Are Blue), has escaped from a maximum-security prison and is working his way through his list of those he holds responsible for his capture. Cross is at the top of the list. Cross's love interest, homicide detective Brianna Stone, gets him involved in a...more

I have a similar complaint with this book as I did with the last one, Cross, but overall it was an enjoyable read. I'm noticing more and more how awkward any action sequences are - anything that includes rapid movement, whether it's a fight scene or even a sex scene. Transition sentences and a feeling of a suspense are totally lost here.

Also, there continue to be out-of-place and kind of weird pop culture references. The real mind-blower in this book was when Detective Cross direc...more

I always look forward with anticipation to a new James Patterson book featuring Alex Cross and the author has not let me down yet.Short sharp chapters with gut wrenching excitementKyle Craig (the Mastermind) has escaped prison and hunting once again being Alex's nemesisbring Alex back from retirement and dealing with another killer known as The Audience killer at the same time. The book races along with no letup for the readerit's intense and the teaser at the end of the book makes sure that Jame...more

3 of 5 stars to the crime drama audio book Double Cross by James Patterson. I made two bad decisions on this book which lead to the low rating. First, I listened to the abridged audio book which was choppy with alot of unknown/unexplained characters. I spend time asking "Who is that?". Second, this appears to be about the 14th installment in this series, so clearly I have no idea what happened before in the earlier books. Sigh, me bad. I did enjoy the book. The story line about a seria...more

I've read all of the books in the Cross series and this one did not disappoint. The usual style of short chapters makes it impossible to put down, as you keep thinking the next chapter is only 2 pages, I'll just read one more...it's a bit like trying to have one drink :) In fact this book was so thrilling, it kept me late for work one morning as I came near the end and couldn't put it down! The references to previous books were very well done and a bit of a reward for regular Cross readers. I...more

Just like watching law and order. Fairly easy read with extremely large print. Alex Cross is an okay character. Still don't know how these guys get the right answer all the time. Will probably read one or two more. Hopefully the stories don't all follow the same plot line.

Ok I change my mind. The book got pretty good around page 200. More like a suspense book, ala Da Vinci Code. Not sure why the author revealed his twist so early in the book. It was a good twist...didn't see...more

Quick read. Short chapters (126 of them), mostly no more than three pages each. Each chapter has significant action which advances the story.

Standard story. A series of serial murders involving three murderers, two sets of serial crimes this time. Alex has a love interest. His fellow officers and family are threatened (a standard element in these stories). Eric Craig, his major nemesis, reappears.

This book reminded me of one of the more average Batman comics with t...more
