Imagine being in an elevator with Woody Allen for three minutes, and he tells you a funny anecdote about buying a pair of pants. You’d find him witty and hysterical and you’d laugh out loud as you walk out of the elevator. OK, now imagine instead of three minutes it’s three days in an elevator with Woody Allen, who doesn’t stop talking for three whole days, and in those three days, he’s still talking about just buying pants. At some point, you’d probably turn to him and say “Enough with the pant ...more

Volim Vudijeve filmove i simpatičan mi je njegov intelektualni cinizam, zato sam sa radošću dohvatila zbirku kratkih priča Puko bezvlašće.

For a long time, Woody Allen has been one of my favorite movie directors. His movies, which many times show the absurdism of the life of normal people, have fascinated me and they are one reason why I have decided to seek an education in film.

Browsing the database of the local library I found this collection stories by Woody Allen and decided to give it a try. And I am so happy I did so, because these stories fascinated me so much with their absurdism. Allen truly is a creative genius who can m

Woody Allen has a tap in his head. When he turns the tap on, out pour gags. Complex sentences setting up simple jokes, by the thousand. You might have read Getting Even, Without Feathers or Side Effects. They are books where Woody takes a single, silly premise, gets all Noo Yoik on its ass, via a few pages of first person narration and a metronomic set-up/punchline rhythm so exacting it's like a Drill Sergeant in clown shoes is shouting at Woody as he types.

Well Woody hasn't marched this yard si

In the 1970s Woody Allen wrote short humorous pieces that often appeared in The New Yorker. These pieces were collected into three acclaimed volumes, Getting Even (1971), Without Feathers (1975), and Side Effects (1980). For many years after that, he didn’t publish any short pieces, only his screenplays. However, at some point in the 1990s, he began to once more write these short comic pieces. These have now been collected into a volume published this year, Mere Anarchy. Having just finished it, ...more

Though I typically remember how I come into the possession of a book, I cannot for the life of me remember how I came to own Woody Allen's "Mere Anarchy." It isn't surprising for me to have a Woody Allen book on my bookshelf (I actually have another I remember getting). I happen to like the man in a purely artistic way. I just don't remember buying or receiving "Mere Anarchy" as a gift.

Regardless of the unsolved mystery, I had Woody Allen on the brain recently because I had read Diane Keaton's

Leí Como Acabar De Una Vez Por Todas Con LA Cultura/Getting Even, y Without Feathers, que me descubrió a Emily Dickinson. Apelaban a mi necesidad adolescente de tener frases sarc

Recommends it for: die hard allen fans and word lovers
As I read this book I told myself, " I am as big a fan of synonyms as the next bibliophile but c'mon!"
Here is an example of that which I speak, "a quincunx* of loyal minions scurried forward" "a salivating lycanthrope*". This one I had to admit was funny, "my son from a previous connubial holocaust".

*quincunx=five objects

So, at times, it was funny but most of the time it was tenebrous, obtuse and pedantic.

I think to get all the jokes you need a street map of Manhattan and then a dictionary of obscure little used words to get the punch lines. This book is more for those considering becoming criminally insane.

The stories within "Mere Anarchy" showcase the author's gifts for witticisms and clever puns; eighteen five-to-ten-pagers, most of which originally appeared in The New Yorker.

I re-read many lines and jokes as I made my way through the brief 175-page collection. Very familiar with Woody Allen's films, I'm ashamed to say I'd never looked much into his prose. Some of the story setups--a man who has difficulty with his newly learned levitation skill; a movie star double kidnapped by extremists who b

2 stars. This was ok but not as funny as I expected.

I had a few chuckles but no laugh-out-louds. Sometimes my mind wandered. I like his weird mind. Woody Allen has a strange relationship with food. Several times he mentioned something odd with food. Many of the vignettes did not have endings. He just sort of stopped.

Woody Allen narrated this. It was better than his narration of some of his earlier works. In those he spoke too fast, not pausing enough for ideas to settle and for a laugh.

I'm starting to finally realize that compilations of a single writers columns are just not for me. Reading one column here or there might be alright, even entertaining and thus worth those few minutes I've spent on the thing. But compilations, oh god, compilations... It becomes painfully obvious the writer's created a persona for writing these things, and what makes it the worst is how that persona is exceedingly limited. Compilations really bring out the formulaic nature of an individual's colu ...more

This is a collection of stand-alone individual vignettes that have been compiled in a “pick me up and put me down anytime” book. In this volume Woody continues to be witty and clever, offering us twenty-eight absurd and quirky tales some of which have been inspired from real life news or events. Only a man like Woody Allen could create these original stories from his imagination. Who else would think about auctioning off prayers on eBay?? I wanna preface a nasty review with this: I love me some Woody Allen...films. I'll take Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, even new offerings like Match Point and Vicky Christina Barcelona any day! But we all know that sometimes dear ole Woody takes a misstep. Curse of the Jade Scorpion? Getting with the stepdaughter? Yes, indeed, this collection of short stories was a disaster on that level. Ok, ok, I did like one thing about the stories - they were very short. The characters, event ...more

A huge, huge disapointment for me! I love Woody Allens movies, I liked his short story collection Side Effects so I took this book from the library. Luckily for me, I didn't bought it because it would be waste of money, like reading this book is waste of time. I'm sure you wonder: 'Is this book really THAT bad?'. And yes, it is. Just as hilarious as 'The complete ...' though the average reader will need a dictionary to get through this one. With words like 'panatela' used to describe a cigar you've got some work to do before you can get to the humor , which works out well if you can't stop laughing at his jokes which run unabated line after line, consistently.
A master of satire, I think his talent lies in the way he turns his sentences subtly taking them one way, when they start out seemingly heading some place else. Li

Woody Allenin novellikokoelma on suomentanut Juhani Loponen (Pelkkää anarkiaa), ja kirja koostuu nimensä mukaisesti melko absurdeista tai yllätyksellisistä 19 kertomuksesta (169 sivua).

Suurin osa näistä anarkistisista novelleista sijoittuu New Yorkiin, ja aiheina on aika usein jokin lehtijuttu tai jollekin julkkikselle sattunut tapahtuma tai kommellus.

Kokoelmana kirja on aika epätasainen. Muutamien täytenovellien lisäksi siinä on poskettoman hauskoja ja tragikoomisia kertomuksia. Jos lukija jaks

The jacket calls this “a book that not only manages to answer the profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling.” After completing the book, I’d agree more with the second part of the statement. The book does not aspire to do more than entertain, and that is notoriously a matter of taste.

The best part is his word-smithing, which includes such gems as “connubial holocaust” for divorce (p. 7) and a translation of the Ameri

This collection of short stories by Woddy Allen started out great with a story about levitation that made me laugh out loud. It was so funny in its unexpected and clever way and I really enjoyed it. The writing was clever in the second and third stories, but I was getting tired of the style. After that, I realized that I wasn't having fun anymore! I didn't really like this collection of stories. Overall I felt they were very similar -- the pacing was mostly the same (frantic), and they all had the exact same aura of oddball ridiculousness. Lots of show-biz patter from the characters, and every single one had some preposterous name. The ridiculous was laid on too thick for my taste, and that meant that some truly funny lines just didn't shine because they were surrounded by so much nonsense.

But if you like stuff that's over the top, you'l

I am a huge fan of this man's thoughts, thought process, or musings, so my review is perhaps more than a little biased. In this review I am also including several of Mr. Allen's books because I feel the same about all of them: Without Feather's, Getting Even and Side Effects.
His style of humour is not for everyone, but it certainly works with me and many of my friends. His seemingly disjointed ideas have affected me positively for decades now. The way he offers an absurd, skewed perspective abou
