Ariel is the abused daughter of a tenant farmer who dreams of better things. At 14, she approaches the aging Earl of Greville, and offers her services as his mistress if he'll pay for her to be educated and clothed as a lady.

Fast forward almost 5 years. Having finished school, Ariel is summoned to London to fulfill her part of the bargain. The thing is, the person collecting is not the earl she knew—he somehow managed to die without anyone telling her, and he's left his bastard (in more ways th

I am always amazed once I finish reading a historical novel. I expect to be bored but I am usually in awe. This book was no exception. I didn't read the book jacket before I started reading the book so I had no idea what to expect. After reading the first chapter I almost stopped reading the book because of the direction I thought it would take. I worried that issues involving rape, prostitution, and assault would abound in thus story. However, I gave it another chapter and I became captivated b ...more

Really enjoyed this book. Great characters and really pulls on your heart strings.
3 1/2 ***

Usually I really love Kat Martin's books but this one just seemed like she followed a basic formula and didn't change it up at all.

Ariel (h) was born a poor tenant farmer's daughter. After the death of her mother when she was young, her father took to drinking and beating his daughter making her life miserable. For years she had longed to escape her life and live the life of a Lady. One day when she was 14 she had a plan, one she was sure would work. She waited for the Earl who owned t

DNF at about 50%. Boring would be the main way I describe this book, even though it seems like a lot of crazy shit happens. I guess because the characters aspire to cardboard and the writing at times is just horrendous.

In addition, it has one of my most hated tropes: a character misinterprets a situation (in this case, Lord Dubious Consent sees Ariel--yes, Ariel--enter the stable with a man. And Lord Dubious Consent is stalking her. He sees her enter with this man and then emerge a few minutes l

I couldn't feel too terribly sorry for Ariel given what she knew she was offering to the older man. I think she rethought it though in the end. Was Justin a bit harsh to her, sometimes and of course, that little betrayal....yeah hurtfult but at the same time he was really hurt as well. He had been down that road w/ that guy before why would he think he could trust another woman? It looked bad, BUT he redeemed WELL. It was a great story w/ angst and I have to say I liked that all th ...more

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book, but there were some portions where it seemed to drag and some parts where the storyline seemed to be overly hastened. I really enjoyed the various twists and turns of the plot, I loved both Justin and Ariel and they made a very intriguing couple. The ending was a little abrupt and (view spoiler) ...more

Ariel started life as the daughter of a drunken and abusive tenant farmer, but finds a way to elevate herself at the age of 14 by offering to become the local earl's mistress. In return, she would be educated and taught to become a lady.

Lucky for her, the lecherous old creeper kicked the bucket, leaving his sullen bastard (and newly adopted) son the heir. What follows is predictable.

With the exception of a section in the middle of the book, and then the very end, I was very, very bored while re

Ariel Summers makes a promise to the old Earl of Greville that if he pays for her schooling, she will become his mistress. While she is at school, she writes weekly to the Earl only unbeknownst to her, the old Earl has died and her letters are going to his son, Justin Ross. He begins to look forward to her letters as he is very jaded. Ariel and Justin soon find they are attracted to each other, but old suspicions about Ariel are hard for Justin to get past.

I liked this book and would advise othe

I really liked the characters in this book. She was a very smart and independent female (in a time when it was hard to be that). He was more sensitive and thoughtful than we first suspected. When he had her strip at the beginning, I didn't know if I could like him after that. But he redeemed himself and saw the errror of his ways. The scene where he rescues her from the prison was my favorite of his scenes. I had my heart torn out by the description of the betrayal she felt after he kicked her o ...more

I never thought I would be reading any book as good as Sweet Vengeance. But I was wrong, this book completely blew me off. There was so much emotion, passion, anger and everything was just so overwhelming that it knocked me back. I don't know if I can ever get over from this book. I wish I have a hard copy of this book.
I wonder whether LOVE is just as beautiful emotion as depicted in novels or it is just a fantasy created by author to escape the real world.

This book keeps popping up as a suggestion, and in other lists that I encounter, the blurb intrigues me, but then I recall that I did read this a long while ago. So I'll just add it here... I can remember that the hero was pushy and adamant that the heroine becomes his lover since his uncle passed away and wasn't able to teach her to learn how to act like a lady. ....I hope I can remember that I've read this.

Recommends it for: people who like hilarious romance novels
This book taught me the value of using an unnecessarily long or obscure word to describe simple things, like drinking, making facial expressions, or reaching orgasm. A+ for unrealistic plot twists and overly emotionally conflicted characters!

(Don't judge; you know you giggle at the romance books, too!)

This book was on its way to a four star rating, but with about a quarter of the book left it started turning me off. was too much faulty hero and too much wish washy heroine. The villains were truly demented. The relationship between the hero and his grandmother seemed hastily thrown in to give him some likable qualities.

Another wonderful book by Kat Martin. A gutsy, take charge of her life young heroine and a hero who lost his heart, or did he? Truly enjoy the little bit of suspense, the determination of Ariel to reach her potential. It is fun, sexy and interesting story. The tension between Kit and Clay is definitely something to look forward to in the next book of this series.

This historical romance was better than I was expecting, but that's never been my favorite genre so I'm more than ready to take a break from it and read some other stuff. Too many earls, lords and ladies! Time for some Olympians, ruffians, and ne'er do wells!
I liked that characters and it was a little different feel than what I'm used to from Kat Martin. I loved Justin and I liked the back story he had going into the story. Ariel fell a little flat for me but their relationship worked well and their personalities balanced eachother nicely.

3-1/2 stars.

The beginning was a little boring, about a 3rd, then it finally started turning around and became heart breaking. Then romantic and sad and romantic. I don't think I've read this author before although I do own a few of her books. Pretty good.
It was fine. Typical of its genre with misunderstandings and people being stubborn. My favorite part was the grandmother eve though she was 98% plot device. I also liked that our heroine was good at math.
Quizás esperaba más de la historia. Me ha parecido un poco más de lo mismo pero resumiendo me ha gustado. Los protagonistas son buenos pero él demasiado típico a los protas masculinos de novela romántica histórica.
I liked the summary enough I accidentally bought it again and didn't realize I'd already read it until halfway through. Even now I can't remember if I liked it. Either time. Must mean it's on the forgettable side!

Absolutely loved this book. It had me from the beginning. I loved the characters and the storyline kept throwing in twist and turns. This author reminded me a little of Judith McNaught. I will look for more by Kat Martin. Over 240 pages on my nook.
Book #63 read in 2007

Another typical romance novel by Martin. Entertaining at times, but predictable.
