Karlinsky, in the introduction to Zlobin's biography of Zinaida Hippius, claims that she is just as great a poet, though lesser known, than her famous contemporaries Anna Akhmatova and Marina Tsvetaeva.

A good roundup of this early 20th century Russian poet's poetry, philosophy, and literary criticism from her various periods. Pachmuss has been criticized for downplaying more transgressive aspects of Hippius' gender, sexuality, and religious beliefs but here she covers most of the main points as
