Swelling to nearly twice its usual size with more than a million refugees from the countryside, Rome became a city of spies, double agents, informers, torturers, escaped Allied war prisoners, ...more

Oddly, this book isn't listed on Wikipedia as one of Robert Katz' books. I suspect it's an alternate title of "The Battle for Rome", but haven't found confirmation of that yet. (On the other hand, haven't looked beyond the information within the book itself for confirmation.)

Has done nothing positive for my general view of the Roman Curia, nor the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church entire.

I have further thoughts, I may yet get to writing them up.

This might be the same book as Black Sabbath. I got an old copy printed in 1969. I tried looking for the book under that title. I guess they renamed it to the present title.
It is a great read. Mr Katz did an excellent job describing what transpired on Oct 16 and the weeks that followed. I came away sad and horrified for the Jews of Rome.
