In The Battle of Jericho , Jericho is a average high school student. He has many friends in school, and has a great friendship with his friends. In his school, there is a club called the Warriors of Distinction that has ran for 50 years, and everyone that joins that club in school is respected highly. One day, Jericho and his cousin is invited to be in the club. Jericho was very excited and thought highly of this advantage. His uncle had also joined the club when he was in the same school as them. His uncle encourages them to join because they say that the activites they do there is very fun, will not experience them in other times. However, when Jericho and his cousin made their choice of joining, they experienced things they wouldn't think will happen. It is too late to quit, and they do not know what to do. Will Jericho and his cousin quit the club? Will they get out of the club? Will they tell what is happening in the club? How is their life affected because of the club?

While reading The Battle of Jericho , I felt all the feelings that Jericho had, whether he is nervous, happy or sad. This book is very good and it relates to teen issues, the books I really enjoy to read. In addition, I love to read Sharon M. Draper's books because she mainly write books on teen issues and I like to read about them. If I had a chance to recommend this book, I will definitely recommend this to teenagers because teenagers will understand what Jericho and his cousin is facing, and can connect to them.

In The Battle of Jericho is a book where there are many special moments and unexpected events. It is also full of surprises and have a nice and unique plt. It also teaches a lesson to make wise choices, and never let a choice to negatively affect you in life.

Jericho’s school has a great club that all boys long to be a part of: The Warriors of Distinction. It’s been around for years (Jericho’s uncle was even a part of it), and it’s known for it’s good deeds and the closeness of the members. Every year new members are inducted into the group, and this year Jericho has been invited to join. Before they can be called Warriors, though, they must go through an initiation process, which lasts a week. At first the tasks seem harmless and only a little demeaning, but as the week progresses, the things the initiates (called Pledge Slime) are asked to do border on hazing. Jericho struggles with staying in the group—if he drops out, then all the initiates suffer. He also would lose the girl he loves, and any confidence the group would provide for him. But he does wonder about lowering himself for this, and he also has a conflict with a musical contest—should he continue with the initiation or go to the contest, where he could win a full scholarship to Julliard?

This book is gripping, and the reader finds himself/herself caught up in all the action, wondering where the plot will go. Draper skillfully takes twists and turns, carefully developing the tension to keep interest high. Her characters are likeable, and readers will sympathize with Jericho. I also liked that though the main characters in the story are African American, you weren’t blinded by their race—it could have been anyone wanting to join the Warriors. And the topic of school clubs and hazing is a good angle for a novel—pair this with The Chocolate War.

Where this book fell flat for me was in dialogue and underdeveloped plot threads. Draper wasn’t consistent with her dialects and slang, and much of the language felt forced out of the characters. A major plot line that I felt got shoved under the carpet was Jericho’s trumpet playing—it was a very big deal at the beginning of the book, but I didn’t feel the tension by the end, when he needed to make the decision about continuing with the Warriors or going to the contest. Another plot line that felt stunted and stereotypical was Kofi’s (another Pledge Slime and one of Jericho’s close friends) home life. Here is the typical teen who’s parents don’t care, but Kofi felt a little forced on the issue, and the whole thing worked out a little too neatly by the end.

Overall it’s a fast read (because you really want to know what happens), and a good topic, but it’s not the best written book.(less)

Dealing with Fraternity-like high school hazing, Draper's novel is heavily moralistic. Some of the characters exist solely to push a moral point and have no other reason outside of having the main characters make a personal reflection. I am really not sure how this would appeal to teens. Also, I am pretty sure that the phrase "all that and a bag of chips" died in the earlier 90's, but maybe I am wrong.

On a positive note, the book does end unexpectedly, which makes the sequel more interesting.

The Warriors of Distinction is a well sought after club for many high school men (and recently women) with traditions dating back fifty years ago. The main character Jericho is soon invited to join the club along with his best friend Kofi, friend Dana and cousin Josh. As the four characters soon learn, this club has a dark side as the four characters along with eleven other pledges are subjected to acts of hazing and humiliation.
The book overall was well written and played towards the young adolescent audience well. The story covers many topics that many high school students could experience such as peer pressure, collegiate opportunities, hazing, bonding and family struggles. As the story continued, the main characters pressured to prove themselves to join the “distinct” Warriors of Distinction. I found myself wanting each character to succeed as they were subjected to different crude challenges. The language and dialogue were written well to feel as if you were right behind the characters. This aspect of dialogue is a key aspect for why this book can be so successful. Many young adolescents draw to books that use language that is similar to their own.
On top of having well written dialogue, this book showed well sought after traits in the main characters. Many of the main characters introduced in the story were heavily involved within their school and community. As the reader reads on, they soon learn that their involvements are rooted from emotional experiences in their childhood. This aspect makes each character likeable and admirable. I was also very pleased to see that the main characters were African American. The main characters were portrayed in a positive light with no stereotypes attached. This was very evident as the reader was taught empathy towards a character who was in a wheel chair.
While this story of challenge and acceptance proved to be interesting, the ending of the story was abrupt. For the length of the entire book (259 out of 290 pages) the story was building and building upon the main characters’ main goal. This has the reader on the edge of their seat until the last thirty pages. These thirty pages are when the story takes a turn for the worst as the reader’s emotions plummet. The climax of the book is met by interesting reversal of emotions, which leaves the reader shocked. This element of the book grabs the reader fully into the story as all of the character’s lives come to a halt. While their lives stop, a lot of unanswered questions surface and the story concludes with many of them unanswered. This aspect of the book left me unsatisfied with the ending. The ending was very abrupt for such a long climax in the book. However in the end, the author was right for choosing the ending because it leaves the reader wanting much more.

I thought that this book was pretty weird even when I picked it up and looked at the cover. I know, you’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover, but whatever. I got the idea from one of my friends, who was reading the third book in the series (without reading the first two, an action I try my best to avoid.) This book is different because most young reader’s books are usually about romance books where the guy and the girl fall in love with each other and they live happily ever after. The difference in this book is that there is a little romance, but it did have a happy ending. This book is about three characters named Josh, Jericho and Kofi. Jericho, Kofi and Josh wanted to join this club called "The Warriors of Distinction." In order to get in this group, you have to go through different task that include hazing to prove you are distinguished enough to be in the group. Dana being the first and only girl to try out for the group has it harder than the rest of the other participants. Eddie who still has feeling for Dana after she turned him down is out for revenge almost pushes her to her limit, but she is determined not to quit. This book does not have a happy ending because at the final task they had to jump off a two-story building after drinking several cups of whiskey. All the participants completed the final task except Josh. He jumps and instead of falling on the mat that has been placed there, he falls on a rock and dies. I feel that this was probably the changing moment in this book.

What I like about the authors writing style is that she really connects the book to how it is for a teenager now a days. For example when Jericho says, “ No Dad, I think she really likes me. But she’d be embarrassed just like I would if I didn’t make the Warriors. You don’t understand”. I think this quote really shows how a teenager feels because we try telling parents something, and it’s like they don’t understand how it is for us now-a-days. They always tell us how it was for them when they were our age and they try and give advice on that event though it’s not the same. Most teenagers like to impress the girl/boy they like by doing something that will make them seem cool, even if it involves them doing something dangerous or just stupid. In most of Sharon M. Draper’s books she always talks about the issues most teenagers are having in their life.

I feel that this book kind of connects to me because all of Sharon M. Draper books talk about African Americans, and this relates to me because I am an African American. This book also connects to me because at the end of the book when Josh had died, Sharon describes how Jericho felt “” this quote really connects to me because that is exactly how I felt when my great grandma died, and it brought back so many memories. When she described this I actually cried when I read this because I knew the feeling of loosing somebody that is so close to you.

At the end of The Battle Of Jericho the pledge group had to jump from a building, not just from the first but the second story of the house! To prove that they have what it takes to be a warrior. The group was almost done with the pledging and then all of the sudden the pledge caption had pulled the gun that the pledge had found in the disgusting dumpster they had to climb in. He had pointed the gun at the last three members, Jericho, Dana, and Josh. Dana had said she wanted to get it finished...more At the end of The Battle Of Jericho the pledge group had to jump from a building, not just from the first but the second story of the house! To prove that they have what it takes to be a warrior. The group was almost done with the pledging and then all of the sudden the pledge caption had pulled the gun that the pledge had found in the disgusting dumpster they had to climb in. He had pointed the gun at the last three members, Jericho, Dana, and Josh. Dana had said she wanted to get it finished with so she jumped. Jericho had made it down. Then josh had jumped and he thought he could fly and as he landed….everyone was flabbergasted….. The ending proved suspense and grief for the reader!!
I think that the fire fighter was a opinionate. He said that when they were in the pledge they only had to jump from a chair, now it’s from a 2 story building… how much it has changed! It’s so hard to get into groups these days. Glade I was in it at the time that I was and not now.
I found out that when they had to get dragged around by leaches like dogs, that was very interesting but very disturbing as well. Every time they had to do something and the pledge had switched it with something else it caught me off guard but very funny that they had tricked them. Like when they had to drink the supposing spit…but it was just a normal drink and they all had the think of that taste in their mouth, it just made laugh!
The four words that I choose for this book are, suspenseful- because when they found out that it would be awhile to see if josh would make it, when u read the book you get nervous, and anxious that he won’t make it. Meaningful- because when Dana took her shirt off it front of the pledge masters the other boys in the group all went to cover her up so she did not fell discussed in the pledge. Powerful- when you read about josh and hear what you will hear when you read it, it will be hard for you not to hold your emotions in. And finally heart breaking- when Arielle and Josh break up you would not like why! When you read it you think that they would stay together for the whole book!!

This is the first book to Sharon M. Draper's series. I wish I read them in order because I read the last book in the trilogy first. Because I did so, the book wasn't not quite as enjoyable. However,I did like it. It shares the story of Jericho, an average teenager in high school. In his high school there is a club. This book was all about a boy name Jericho who has a normal life and loved to play trumpet. Well, it wasn't a bad read. Like most other Sharon M. Draper books I've read, it featured high school kids dealing with real, tough issues. There as lots of drama and suspense. I also really liked how complex the main story line seemed--for most of the novel, it felt like whenever the main character was faced with a difficult decision, both choices were a little bit good and little bit bad.
