Dealing with Fraternity-like high school hazing, Draper's novel is heavily moralistic. Some of the characters exist solely to push a moral point and have no other reason outside of having the main characters make a personal reflection. I am really not sure how this would appeal to teens. Also, I am pretty sure that the phrase "all that and a bag of chips" died in the earlier 90's, but maybe I am wrong.
On a positive note, the book does end unexpectedly, which makes the sequel more interesting.

The "Battle of Jericho" by Sharon M. Draper was about a sixteen year old in high school named Jericho that is centered around his cousin and friend. This was not your typical teenage book. Usually, when pondering teenage books one would expect to be faced with a standard plot of romance and betrayal.
throughout the book there is exemplary demonstration and depiction of what a general high school experience could be like. The book was very interesting. It deals with how a club can un...more

This story takes place in the outskirts of Cincinnati as it follows the trials and tribulations of high school students attempting to join The Warriors of Distinction. This is a well-known club within the community. The warriors contribute greatly during the month of December to many needy families. The Warriors of Distinction is a well sought after club for many high school men (and recently women) with traditions dating back fifty years ago. The main c...more

Jericho has a good life. Has a good group of friends, does ok in school and loves playing the trumpet. When Jericho, his cousin Josh, and their friend Kofi, are all invited to join The Warriors of Distinction, everything changes. The Warriors of Distinction is a very powerful club ran by previous members and seniors. You cannot just join; you have to be asked. Being a member of this club, means you’re high and mighty in school. You get to wear fancy, silky black jackets and everyone knows who y...more
This book is very interesting. Three kids get named Josh, Jericho and Kofi were invited to be in a club in school called the Warriors Of Distinction. Everyone that has been asked to be in this club has to prove themselves to the Warriors Of Distinction that they are willing to do anything to be in this club. Dana is the first girl that has ever been in this club so a guy named Eddie gives her a hard time because he still likes her but she keeps ignoring him. They all made a pledge to the Warrior...more
I thought that this book was pretty weird even when I picked it up and looked at the cover. I know, you’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover, but whatever. I got the idea from one of my friends, who was reading the third book in the series (without reading the first two, an action I try my best to avoid.) Here are the problems I have with it: the language was terribly dry. Draper tries to make it seem like these people are from the hood or something, but it just comes out sounding like...more
This book is different because most young reader’s books are usually about romance books where the guy and the girl fall in love with each other and they live happily ever after. The difference in this book is that there is a little romance, but it did have a happy ending. This book is about three characters named Josh, Jericho and Kofi. Jericho, Kofi and Josh wanted to join this club called "The Warriors of Distinction." In order to get in this group, you have to go through different task that...more
Well, based on the title, I thought this was going to be about something else entirely, so I was a bit surprised. However, it ended up being quite good. It was nice to read about black kids who don't live in the projects and have to deal with all of that. This is about boys pledging a popular club at school and the trials and tribulations of going through the rather morally conflicting process. I kept waiting for the hazing activity that would lead the protagonist to quit on ethical grounds, but...more
i just finished reading the book called, "The Battle Of Jericho," by Sharon M. Draper. This book was about sixteeen year old Jericho Prescott. Him, his Cousin Josh Prescott and their best friend Kofi were invited to pledge for the Warriors of Distinction, the oldest and most exclusive club in school. as well as a few other boys around the school. Jericho had his eyes on one of the prettiest girls in school, Arielle. Just being a pledge wins him her attention. But nobody knows what the Warriors...more
What? Jim's reading a book with no romance, no SF, no fantasy, not a classic, not a comedy, and aimed at the YA market? Well, I asked the librarian for her favorite book she read this year. Since she is responsible for the YA, this is what she gave me.
Jericho was never the popular kid. He's a music geek with a decent group of friends. When he's asked to pledge for a very exclusive club, his life gets much better. Suddenly he's popular ,and more importantly, with a popular girl. He and his cousin...more

A hazing incident culminates in loss of life at a high school where select teens compete to become members of a prestigious and long-standing community service organization. Jericho is excited to be chosen and happy that his circle of friends are also being invited into the inner circle, but as the initiation events become more intense, his discomfort level increases. Not only must Jericho examine his priorities (belonging to a social club verses preparing for his future career) but he also call...more

Teachers: This book has the potential to hook students from page 1. What would you do to be popular? Would you kiss someone's toes? Carry their books to class? Give them money? I can see myself creating a pre-reading interest guide which would easily generate enough momentum to get student engaged and discussing, "what if."

Have you ever heard about fraternities and sororities pledging? This book is similar to this but not quite the same. In this book, the kids are pledging to join but they have to do a lot of outrageous stunts to get in.
In this book, we are greeted with the protagonist named Jericho. Jericho and Josh, his cousin were invited join. They decided to join because they thought there wasn’t any harm in joining. That same night in which they had to pledge (a way of showing that you’re up to the task) th...more

Jericho thought that the "Warriors of Distinction" is the coolest and most awesome group club ever but there are some scary things about them. It feels like they are hiding something. Everyone thinks that the "Warriors of Distinction" are good because the people in them get good grades and they have fresh clothes everyday. They also have a good reputation because they do donations for kids. They seem pretty good kids. Now look at pages 93-94. It shows one of the leaders of the "Warriors of Dist...more

At the end of The Battle Of Jericho the pledge group had to jump from a building, not just from the first but the second story of the house! To prove that they have what it takes to be a warrior. The group was almost done with the pledging and then all of the sudden the pledge caption had pulled the gun that the pledge had found in the disgusting dumpster they had to climb in. He had pointed the gun at the last three members, Jericho, Dana, and Josh. Dana had said she wanted to get it finished...more

It talks about a teenageer's life...

I am still reading this book, but as of what i've already read of this book it is pretty good. I could relate to this book alot. Some people might think that Jericho is a bad person cause of what he did at first, but if you kept reading and going at it,he was doing it for a reat reason.I would do the same, reason is,cause I love to help people and like people to think right of me.Jericho is a great person, threw the middle of the book i started to figure out how the book got its name.Jericho is ba...more
This is the first book to Sharon M. Draper's series. I wish I read them in order because I read the last book in the trilogy first. Because I did so, the book wasn't not quite as enjoyable. However,I did like it. It shares the story of Jericho, an average teenager in high school. In his high school there is a club. Not like mathletics or chess club but a group of boys, they are not gang members or jocks, honestly I can't truly describe it. They do good things, like put on a toy drive for familie...more

Well, it wasn't a bad read. Like most other Sharon M. Draper books I've read, it featured high school kids dealing with real, tough issues. There as lots of drama and suspense. I also really liked how complex the main story line seemed--for most of the novel, it felt like whenever the main character was faced with a difficult decision, both choices were a little bit good and little bit bad. I appreciate this because sometimes I feel like in life there isn't a complete right and wrong answer. I a...more

Anyone who loves realistic fiction or Sharon M. Draper books.
I finished reading this amazing book. The reason I chose this book is because I love Sharon M. Draper books. This book is just another one of her great books. I like how it was told in the perspective of the character. It helps because you know what the charcater is thinking. I also like that the hazing in this book relates to things that actually happen in some place in the U.S. This book takes you inside the lives of the people that have to go through hazing. I was shocked at the things they h...more
