<big>A fiercely individualist Goth girl wakes up to discover that the whole world has gone Goth and she's actually -- gag -- popular.

Jade Leigh is a nonconformist who values individuality above all else. She has a small group of like-minded Goth friends who wear black, dabble in the dark arts, and thrive outside the norm. They're considered the "freaks"

I'm so surprised that I'm writing a negative review of this book. When I first got Oh My Goth, I thought it'd be one of those books that I'd recommend to all my friends. The premise was great! I mean--here's to showing everyone is human on the inside and labels/appearances should not be the defining factor of a person or their worth.

And then...

Well, first off, we get this huge contradiction right at the opening. Each chapter is prefaced with a blurb from Jade's private ...more

Jade is a Goth-girl who is a total nonconformist and is a "freak" at her school.

Mercedes is a "Barbie" -- blonde, super-popular, and a total conformist, who is also Jade's mortal enemy.

Clarik is a new mysterious boy that has come to their high school, who Jade quickly realizes she has a crush on.

The girls' principal is sick of these two girls causing problems so she decides to tea...more

thought it had a good plot and was great in making it relate to our world.I loved the poems the author put in on every chapter.
like most of my books I'm left wanting more not becuase the book wasn't good but becuase I couldn't let go of the book.
I read this book in a day.
it's basicly about a girl that is always getting in problems and always stands out even when she tries her hardest not to.
she sent to this world were things are so much different then she could ever think...more

Have you ever been really conflicted over a book? One that you really liked but can pick lots of flaws in? That is EXACTLY how I feel about Oh My Goth.

First of all, I have to point out my conflict over what genre this book is. Definitely young adult, but whether to place it as contemporary or supernaturally, it is more contemporary but with some fantasy elements in it. I would like to point out to readers that the blu...more

This book is an interesting twist from the normal mushy teen romance which is present in most YA books. Our protagonist, Jade Leigh is a nonconformist - she's a typical Goth girl with backbones and guts. When she is sent to the headmistress, Ms Hamilton's (dearly known as Hammy) office for talking back to a teacher, Hammy decides to punish her to a field trip along with Mercedes Turner, the leader of the Barbie clones who is caught kissing a guy in the library with their parents' consent.

Totally random, extremely random, impossibly random.

I picked this book out of random sense! And I loved it so much! In fact I finished it in two hours. First of all, GREAT title! Second, love love love the story plot. Third, freaking humorous! Fourth, a bad ass hot dude, a goth girl, and a Barbie, could things just get any better?

The story was fast-paced, there's not even a second that I hated it. From the hillarious comments to the quirky characters, and the whole new id...more

Gena Showalter is a pretty good writer, I liked the way I could somewhat feel what Jade was feeling. I like showing my individuality and, like Jade, I hate how most people dress, act, and talk the same. I could really relate to her because even though she was an outcast, she still had friends, family, and a crush.

I didn’t like how the high school life was shown. It seemed totally fake to me. I mean, in both the virtual world and the real world, someone was worshiped like a God. That...more

Always being the outcast in Haloway High School, goth girl Jade Leigh was not surprised she got into trouble again and was sent to the principles office. Surprised to see the popular girl, barbie like Mercedes Turner there and finding out that even though they were being punished for different crimes, they were going to be punished together. Being taken to see Dr. John Laroque, being sedated and then hooked up to computers didn’t prepare either of them for the virtual reality that they were ab...more

I really enjoyed this YA/(slightly paranormal) book.

Meet Jade Leigh, one of 4 of the goth kids at her school. After a squabble with her teacher, she ends up in the principals office and is told she will wait until tomorrow to get her punishment. She meets Clarik, the new kid at the office. Mercedes, (queen bee-barbie of the school) is rumored to have gotten into a fight with her friends over Clarik.

The next day both Mercedes and Jade are told they will endure their puni...more

Oh My Goth is a funny, entertaining teen story. Jade and Mercedes are mortal enemies in high school. One is the most popular girl, the other is the "freak", but together they discover they have much more in common than they'd imagined, all because their crazy principal decides to use a virtual reality game to swap their roles and teach them a lesson.

The whole story is told under Jade's perspective which with her personality makes reading Gena Showalter's story an amusing ex...more

Some of this book didn't make sense to me. Like the idea of goths being freaks...that was weird. Logically, I know that everywhere is NOT like my high school, where there's actually quite a few goths, and no one really cares if you like bondage pants and wearing black. Or talking about death (I mean, that's a little bit weird, but to each his own). No one cares? I don't know.

So in a way, the idea of there being ONE perfect popularity queen (common Hollywood theme, rare in real life,...more

I’ve always known Showalter’s works are always from unique plots, those that are very unusual, but a book that features virtual game combined with Goths and Barbie clones? Way unusual, and very intriguing.

It’s a story that presents the reader how some people would want to show heir individuality even to the extent that they would bend all rules to show that they are special and that they are not one of the crowds, they stand out. That was the case of Jade Leigh, and that’s why sh...more

the kind of novel all teenagers should read.
Why? Because being fashionable, being popular can change in a moment, being your self will not. You will be generous, funny, obnoxious, lovely, kind, hurtful all on your own, so why homologate yourself with a dress code that proclaims to the world nothing but "I'm trying to be perfect/strange/something, anything to distinguish myself from the mass". It's not what you wear that's important.
This book is all about that. It's about ho...more

Just Briefly. Okay, wtf! LOL. About a chick, Jade, who is labeled a "freak!" Then another girl, Mercedes, who is considered popular in the school. They are not family, friends, nor enemies. They just hate each other. Both Jade and Mercedes get in trouble at school constantly, so the principal decides to have their parents need to come in. Their parents and the principal decided they really need to do something about their daughters. The parent's signed a consent for a "little"...more

Oh My Goth was oh my god bad. I slammed the book—twice—on the countertop while reading. I ranted to my brother how much I disliked the book. I fumed for a good 10 minutes afterwards. My ‘dogma’ of how MTV books could never go wrong has proven to be blasphemous with this book.

When reading the summary I thought ‘hey this sounds pretty good’. When I finished I nearly—gagged—myself.

Jade needed a new sense of what it means to be an individual. She needs to understand that wear...more

I loved this book-it was good all the way through...but the ending. I mean it was an OK ending but it left me wanting more. I feel that it was more like a rushed ending, maybe the author had a deadline or something with the editor and wanted it over quickly? However, this is still a good book. A fast and easy read, maybe if you want to kill some time?

Showalter, who is better known for adult romances such as the Atlantis novels and the Lords of Underworld Series, tries her hand at young adult fiction. Jade is a goth in a school full of "Barbies". She and her friends are constantly ridiculed and mocked. When she and her worst enemy Mercedes run afoul of the school's evil principal, Ms. Hamilton decides to "teach them a lesson". The principal tricks their parents into signing a consent form for a "field trip". The ...more

Totally mindless teen fic. Loved it, but it could never be called "good." It was good reading for the plane, kept my mind off the fact that I was 40,000 feet off the ground. That alone earns it 2 stars rather than the 1 it probably rightly deserves. :)

This is an awsome book!! If you like Sci-Fi, and goth, this is the book for you. It tells alot about judging people and about cliques. Which are SO stupid might I add. It's about a girl who can't fit in, but NOBODY is going to get her down.

This is a fun book, for teens and adults alike. Gena Showalter always creates fabulous characters that are entertaining yet also accessible. In this case, it's Jade Leigh and Mercedes Turner -- two complete opposites with a mutual hatred for one another. Watching these two navigate the trials of an ultra clique-conscious high school is both amusing and poignant. And then, of course, there's Clarik Spanger. You can always count on Showalter to deliver a hunky, exciting man -- or boy -- to the par...more

Jade, a non-conformist punk Goth chick, gets into trouble for the last time. Taken on a "field trip" to a secret lab, where she's strapped down a sedated, Jade wakes up in an alternate reality in which roles are reversed and Jade has gone from the bottom to the tip-top of the social ladder. To get back to reality, Jade is going to have to work with her arch-enemy, "Barbie" girl Mercedes.

I thought that this story, while a bit predictable, was cute and entertaining....more

Ok I really liked this book why cant I give it a full 5 stars? certain thing could of been more developed like clarik --his character wasnt really developed. the good thing is the book was easy and soo unexpected twisted story. Its not normal Gena's writing and it was a great change and wonderful plot. I think because I didnt really understand how the change was that I kept thinking there was an easy way out of the false reality.I think if it was said in the beginning it was like "fax machi...more

I especially loved Clarik *drools*.
Bad boys are my thing ;)
And he was soooo fierce.
I guy said something mean to Jade and BOOM Clarik was on him beating the sh!t out of him.
So sexyyyy....

Anyways, and I loved how he was on the other side.
I thought that was a possibility but was like, "not sweet Clarik! D:"

And Hamilton is a BITCH. What a stuck up hoe.

I rather enjoyed reading Oh My Goth.

However, I just can't write a too positive review, because the book is filled with flaws. Some character's motivations are virtually non-existant, the main character is very hypocritical, and the writer has no idea what the term "virtual reality game" actually means or how it would work, which causes a lot of confusion. The phenomenon portrayed in the book seems to be an alternate reality, not a virtual reality game.

Now, the writ...more

If you couldn't tell that it was going to be bad by the title or the sh*tty tagline ("Kiss my hall pass"), don't worry. It's bad from the very first word written.

Jade is a self-proclaimed "nonconformist" goth girl who is picked on by everyone else (except for the three only other goth kids in the school - yeah right) because she's different. Mercedes is the most popular girl at school who's main goal is to make every loser's life a living hell. One day, both girls...more

Oh My Goth wasn’t quite what I expected. I mainly thought it would just be a quick and funny book, but it was much more than that. Gena Showalter managed to tie-in subtle but important messages about prejudice, cliques, and maintaining a self appreciation for who you are, an individual. She also shows how your opinions on people and ideas can change when you are placed in a totally different scenario. Som...more
