I originally decided to read Dick Burton's The Lake Regions of Central Africa because I was taken by the adventure and romance that the discovery of the source of the Nile implies. Surely this thick book would be full of adventure, and beauty, and awe.

Instead I slogged month after month through hundreds of pages overflowing with constant complaining, the vilest of racist remarks, and an ever-present supreme bitterness burning like the rays of the hot African sun from the pen of the author.
