PENNY ARCADE VOLUME 5: THE CASE OF THE MUMMY’S GOLD BY JERRY HOLKINS AND MIKE KRAHULIK: The Penny Arcade team are back again with their next long-awaited volume of the online comic: The Case of the Mummy’s Gold. Volume 5 features a Hardy Boys classic looking cover as Gabe and Tycho stand wary by a door in geeky-looking outfits that bare a resemblance to classic Star Trek uniforms, as a pair of mummy’s arms stretch from the open doorway.

Unless you are a major geek like me, you have no idea what Penny Arcade is. If you do know what Penny Arcade is, you will have probably already read this book. Penny Arcade is one of the most-read online comics, especially for video game enthusiasts. If you play videogames or even create videogames or work in an industry related to videogames, you read Penny Arcade as a matter of course. Where ESPN is the daily stop for sports fans, Penny Arcade is the daily stop for video game enthusiasts and...more
I decided to read this since my husband is such a fan. Often enough their online strip often appeals to me. While most of this was a little out of my element I enjoyed more than a few of the strips in here. I will likely read future editions and plan on picking up the one before this (although, any earlier ones may be way out of my taste). I would recommend this for fans of the online comic, video game fans, and those who consider themselves to be tech-nerds.
I love this comic to death -- it seems kinda silly to own the books when the archives are available for free, but buying it pays their rent and Jerry Holkins's commentary is well-worth it (especially since I don't always get the more in-jokey gaming strips, and without the accompanying news posts on the website version the jokes go over my head). Also included are copies of the paper they keep on top of their convention-tables, covered with their own drawings and notes as well as readers'. Plus ...more
Jerry Holkins is one of my favorite writers. through the five volumes that they have printed (or for free online) you can read along as he develops one of the most interesting, on-point, and hilarious writing styles I've ever experienced.
I enjoyed this book, as I've enjoyed all the other books in the series. I particularity loved the strip about Shadow Hearts: Covenant & "Tycho"'s comment about Fable II was certainly prescient.
so, with every penny arcade strip still available for free online, why spend $13 to buy this print edition of the strips from 2004? well, because when humanity disappears in some sort of i am legend type scenario, and teh interwebs crashes, i'll still be able to read the comics while the rest of you are going to be arcade-less, which is a very sad "-less" to be. but for real? in addition to the great writing and visual gags in the strips themselves, there's also jerry holkins's (tyc...more
Book 5 of PA's amazing run of webcomics. A must read for any fan of funny things. Especially geeks.
And we've finally hit the modern age, where Penny Arcade has hit the form it remains in still today. Funny, brutal, cultish, and chock full of insider videogame jokes that not even the explanatory paragraphs fully fill us in on, this is still a joyous book. God bless Tycho's silver tongue.
Another great look at tech/videogame history through a collection of comics that you can read on the internet for free. A must have for serial Penny Arcade readers.
Continued, sheer brilliance.
Definitely my favorite so far.

Keith Gerald "Jerry" Holkins is the writer of the webcomic Penny Arcade. Holkins goes by the pseudonym "Tycho Brahe." This is also the name of one of the two main characters of Penny Arcade, who is a cartoonized self-insertion of Holkins. However, as the character of Tycho was not originally meant to represent Holkins, the two have few physical similarities; for example Holkins...more
