This book is a fairly thin paperback, with patterns in both the front and back of the book that add a majority of the bulk, but it includes 14 designs for only around $12 so it's definitely a great deal.
While I am drawn to sewing books and even the occasional "altered clothing" book, I rarely purchase books on sewing clothing because, well, it just seems too dang complicated. But downtownDIY boasts that its projects are easy so I decided to give it a try.

Okay, now we're talking!! Here's a great book with both beginner and more advanced projects, patterns included, for a steal ($12 and you get really cute patterns for a 60s style tunic dress, pencil skirt, shirt, and an adorable ruffly circle skirt). It has some really easy projects for the rank beginner, but the dress and shirt are actually fairly advanced, and a beginner might benefit from a little bit of help from a more experienced friend to construct them.
