This book was kinda fun at first because it shows you pictures of the baby's development every week. But the text made me sick to my stomach! As if I wasn't enough already... every week this doctor-author (a man, by the way) goes into everything that could possibly go wrong during a pregnancy - from the most rare complications on. It is ridiculous! It was scary and depressing at a time when you should be relishing in the amazing changes and visulizing nothing but the best outcomes. Pregnanc...more

This was the least helpful of the pregnancy books I have used. It does have a chapter for each week, but the information is not entirely well dispersed, and the tone of the writing I found off-putting. The thing that bothered me the most was the author's attitude toward induction and other interventions. As if a 7 1/2 pound baby "may not fit" through a smaller mom's pelvis! I wouldn't recommend this one, especially for moms more interested in natural childbirth and encouragement.

I thought this book was more informative than what to expect when you're expecting. It gives you a lot of information about the growth and development of the baby instead of just answering questions. It also made me slightly neurotic though.

Horrible Horrible Book! AVOID! AVOID! This man is a terrible writer and gives terrible advice. Stay away from this book. It won't help you in any way.

I loved that each week is broken down into a few pages, which makes it easy to read for a few minutes before going to bed each night. I DIDN'T love that there were pages of rare illnesses and diseases that you or the baby had a one in a million chance of contracting each week. I think if they are going to include this in the book, they could put it all in one section rather than assault you with it each week. I still gave this 4 stars because I did otherwise enjoy the format and just learned to ...more

After reading this book, I've determined that I'm not the target market (jokes about me having testicles instead of ovaries aside). It's designed for people who don't have the attention span to sit down and read a book cover to cover in a few days. It's designed for people who want to read 15-20 pages per week (the week by week part) and who don't have a very good memory (it repeats itself all of the time). I found the organization of the information into 'weeks' to be a false division - the ...more

I actually didn't read this all the way through, I stopped around week 28 when I got to the part where they were listing some pretty crazy off-the-wall numbers in regards to how dangerous homebirth is, which I am planning to do with my midwife and, having done tons of research, I know the numbers presented in this book were totally false but could scare the bejeezus out of someone who wasn't ocd about analytically researching everything like I am. I already didn't like the fact that the whole p...more

In the category of pregnancy reads, I would say this is one of my favorites and most useful books. In the category of weekly updates of what is most likely happening in your pregnancy, this is by far the best book of it's kind. I had so many recommendations to read a different book that has been around, but I am so glad that I found this one, in comparison the "other" book has nothing on this one. When curious about this book in it's republication, I found several negative reviews that...more

This book was only like $2 at Rite Aide one day when I was picking up a prescription. I wanted something that had the week by week development because I just wanted to know what was going on in my body and with the baby each week.

I found a few websites that had some information, but a lot of it was hit-and-miss depending on the week you were looking for information about.

Anyway, my plan is to keep reading this book week by week until the delivery, but I already have an ...more

Generally good information, but focused too much on the negative. Each chapter would begin with approximate baby size, your size, and what kinds of things were happening in your body as well as how the baby was developing. This would be about one paragraph. The rest of the chapter would focus on everything (in great detail) that could possibly go wrong with you or your baby.
My advice: Skip this one and just go with the classic What to Expect When You're Expecting.

This book is great if you like to feel fat and irresponsible, but for the rest of us, this one has limited uses. The first trimester information is good -- it gives a nice overview of early formation and is fairly accurate regarding early symptoms. I found it difficult to read, however, much past that b/c it's guide on where your weight-gain should be and how you should be feeling past the first trimester just does not track right, in my case..

This was the most helpful of the pregnancy books that I tried out. I ended up returning What To Expect because I found the layout annoying, and I thought the book focused way too much on unreasonable pregnancy nutrition goals (this coming from a healthy/athletic woman) and scary/odd diseases that you could encounter during pregnancy. (I know some people have accused this book of being like that too, but I think all pregnancy guides cover some of that stuff, and this one was much more brief abo...more

I really liked the way this book was laid out. Each chapter corresponded to 1 week of pregnancy therefore I read one chapter every week until I hit 40 and a half weeks when I finished it off. Full of information this s a great guide to pregnancy and I particularly enjoyed the illustrations. Reading about what size my baby was each week and what she was doing was very exciting. However I do have one major complaint about this book. Each chapter also contains various paragraphs about everythi...more

I read this book with all 3 of my children. If you are expecting your first child, this book is not all inclusive. But if you've already had a child, it is great to read to refresh your memory about what's going on with you and baby. I love how it's laid out - it was so helpful to know certain things were normal and what I could possibly expect in the coming days. Definitely worth keeping on the night stand!

Good read (much better than "What to Expect When You're Expecting") which takes the pregnancy week by week. Would not give 5 stars because at times it skips over details of more common issues while delving into details on remote complications. But like that it told you approximate size and development of the baby week by week so you could follow along in the excitement.

I currently have the 3rd edition and I really like it. I like the format of the book because it is layed out in a manner where I can easily find what I am looking for and skip over what I consider to be all the scary issues involved in pregnancy...which I feel is all some books cover. However, I have looked at the latest edition and did not care for it as much.

Once we learned I was pregnant I decided I better read on what's head of us in the near future. I came across this book, skim the pages and picked it up. Read the entire thing. I always recommend this book when hear someone is pregnant. There is a follow up book but we didn't get that far, reading went out the door for awhile after she was born.....
Jenni
I like this one because its just a quick chapter once a week on what the baby's doing and what your body is doing. Some of it is useless but some of it is really fun. I like the baby size comparisons and enjoy the fact that each weekly chapter is concise (great for those preggo ladies like me that fall asleep after about 10 minutes of attempting to read).
Melanie
I love that each week I can read about 5 pages and get a good idea of what is going on with my body and the baby's. It gives good information along the way- informative but not scary. It also has a little section for tips for dad such as"Your wife is feeling more tired in the last months, you may want to offer to go to the grocery store so that she will have time to rest." or "You may want to do something special for your wife this week just to let her know you appreciate what s...more

I am actually reading this book week by week following my pregnancy. I find this book to be organized in a much better way than What to Expect as well less scary and condescending. My husband even seems to not mind reading the 15 pages or so a week so he understands more about what is going on. He refuses to read any other book as they are a little to "touchy feely" for him.

I really enjoy the pictures at the beginning of each week that shows you what your baby looks like at...more

This book was loaned to me by a friend. I liked the way it was set up in a week by week format, but some of this information was presented out of order I felt. I would be reading along, and I would think "why didn't they tell me this before?". Also the authors are a little pessimistic. They often tell you what can go wrong and I think pregnant women tend to worry enough without having more to worry about. Yes, they could tell you the "bad" stuff but the way it's presented cou...more

I loved this book when I read it during my second pregnancy! It compares the size of your baby to a piece of fruit so you can actually picture how big it is at the time. This book also details how your baby is developing each week. I absolutely loved being able to understand my unborn baby better:-)

I couldn't wait to read each new chapter, week by week! I loved how the doctor described the size of the baby, its development, the changes in the mom's body and things that you should expect from your doctor's visits. I thought the book was informative, easy to understand and gave a lot of helpful information.

Most of the other pregnancy books I read tracked the pregnancy by months. I needed something more frequent to get me through my bouts of "morning" sickness and miscar...more

There is some useful information in here, but it's the type of text that is likely to make you more paranoid that things will go wrong than reassure you. I don't need to hear about every obscure issue that could arise as if it's going to be a typical part of the pregnancy process.
Michelle
this book gave great specific information about the weekly development of a baby during pregnancy. I used this book together with the "What to expect" to get a full picture, because while this one is good to read about the baby, the other book is good to read about the actual pregnancy.
Heidi
I really liked reading about my pregnancy on a weekly basis and it had tons of good information. I liked this over What to expect when you're expecting. Which is funny because I liked reading about my baby on a monthly basis as opposed to a weekly basis!

As in all of the pregnancy books, I skipped some parts. This was my favorite that I read, less alarming and less extreme than "what to expect when you're expecting". I read it in spurts rather than in one sitting, so it wasn't information overload.

This book is great for first-time pregnant women. It's well-written, informative, interesting, and useful. I love the way it is organized. It goes through your pregnancy week-by-week with what you're going through (or will be going through), what the baby is doing, and what to expect with different pregnancy topics or issues. I read it with my first baby and loved it. Now that I'm on number 4, it's still nice to have a review, but I find I skim lots of the paragraphs. I'm glad they have bold hea...more

A good book if you're not a "reader". It was neat to see how my baby was growing, but there was a great deal of information I would have liked to have known about earlier in my pregnancy that was found in later weeks/chapters. Pretty basic IMO.
