A bushy collection of letters submitted by readers to the Time of London between 1900 and 1975 - humorous, outraged, passionate, and eccentric. Many of the writers are known literary and political figures - Wodehouse is here, so is Doyle, here is Shaw - and more than one Prime Minister, members of parliament too - in chapters dividing the letters more or less by decade, but without very much of an organizing principle. This is a fun compilation of the best letters written to the venerable London Times between the years 1900-1975. Some are thought provoking, some are humorous, and some are just plain dotty. They are so typically British and I say that in a complimentary manner. It is interesting to note the change in writing style and the subject matter as the century proceeds to more modern times. A priceless work, full of charm and understatement, such as Chamberlain's letter concerning the birds he had observed in St James' Park, just before he announced Britain was at war.
