I got this book after having my oldest was born, a little over 8 years ago. I started reading it, often going ahead of her age, curious of when my daughter would be doing certain things (the book is divided in chapters, by month, and each month you have a list of activities that your baby is likely to be doing at that specific age). I also read the end section of the book, which talks about illnesses and injuries. At times I wondered why I was reading all that stuff, as my daughter was very heal...more

I never finished this book. Much like What To Expect When You're Expecting, there were times when I felt inadequate as a mother because I wasn't doing EXACTLY as the book recommended. I know that every child is different and has individual wants and needs, and there were many good ideas to keep in mind. However, I think there were a few times in the book that I felt the authors were a little preachy about specific lifestyle/child-rearing choices. Also, the book kept giving me more rea...more

I'm sure there are better baby books out there. Question/Answer format is annoying. Even more annoying? Chapters are titled by month, for example "the fifth month." But that does not mean the fifth month of life, it mean five months old. That can really mess with you when reading the developmental benchmarks at the front of each chapter.
I'm using it as a more for reference than read-through.

recommends it for: NEW MOMS!
I do not think a new mom should LIVE out of a book like this, but this is an incredible reference for all of those strange things that come up. It's amazing what you can look up in the index and actually find...like..."white stuff in mouth"...i am not lying! I stay one month ahead so i get an idea of where Sophie is headed!

I am finding this book only somewhat helpful. Just as in "What to Expect When You're Expecting" I wasn't a big fan of the Q&A format and find it fairly repetitive. I do pick it up as a reference book for checking symptoms or making sure my son is "on track" with growth and development.

recommends it for: New moms
Answered most every question I encountered about new, strange, confusing behaviours/situations. Plus a bunch of great Really healthy recipes to get young one started on a better foot than the Average North American kid. Alleviated tons of anxiety from ignorance and unsurety.

recommends it for: new parents - with caveats
Not a great book, but has easy to access and relatively detailed information about, well, what you child might be doing in the first year of his or her life. It can be reassuring. It can also be anxiety inducing. As with any parenting book, read critically.

Interesting and informative. If you're trying to educate yourself on the many perspectives on child rearing, this is one of many you should read. None of these books are informative enough to be your sole reference on the topic.

This book served me well as a nervous first-time mother. Once I got the hang of motherhood, I eschewed it in favor of personal experience and the wisdom of other mothers I met.

Fantastic. I absolutely suggest this book to first time moms. I referred to it almost every day. Babies don't come with instructions, but this is pretty close.

Trying to read a "manual" on raising my child but I think that it's more important to live the experience rather than try to study up on what's to come.

This book has been moderately helpful with my questions about Rock's first year. Obviously, his first year isn't over yet, so I can't give a full review!

Answers many of those first time parent questions, which allows me to be a psychotic parent in private and a reasonable one in front of the pediatrician.

This book was pretty helpful. I went to it a lot for many different questions. The What to Expect organization makes it a very user-friendly book.

It was very helpful for a developmental guide. I used the internet and books and holistic oriented people to guide me through her health care.

Not bad, but just as preachy as the first book. Glad I got these books for free - I wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on them.

A nice, helpful resource. Not necessarily comprehensive and almost an excess of answers to overly worried questions, but helpful.

This first edition seems pretty outdated but still a nice reference for a new mom. Covers milestones, concerns, tips etc.

Overall, a good resource for new parents who want some general idea of what's going on with their new baby.
