I read this when I was stuck in Cusco for an extra because of rain and fog. I was suffering from altitude sickness and an unshakable chill so I was not happy to be going back to my hotel. Luckily, I found this on the shelf at my hostel so I spent the evening in my warm bed and read the ENTIRE book that evening. I'm a fast reader but it's a pretty thick book. A really good series (although the later ones stretch the color pun a bit) about a black detective after WWII in LA-- a smart, honorable man whose eyes have been opened to the world around him through his experiences in life and during the war. Easy is a brilliant character-- a true literary icon... and Mouse... the ultimate angry side-kick. These are great airplain reads.

Another Easy Rawlins mystery from Mosley. In some ways theses books feel like guilty pleasures, but Mosley packs a lot into his "simple" stories. One of most significant themes addresses racism in the context of whatever time and place he is writing about. As a black man Rawlins finds himself unable to avail himself of institutions white people take for granted.

I love Easy Rawlins mysteries. Walter Mosley writes with alacrity. His stories really move. He peoples his books with colorful characters, complex plotting and a likeable, well-defined protagonist, Easy Rawlins.
