I didn't realize until looking for this 2007 Guardian longlist book on Goodreads that it is the beginning of a fantasy series. The ending could be open, but at least one set of conflicts is resolved. The cover of the edition I read is misleading, apparently showing Jacob from our world plunging through the hole leading to Nian's world--the book is much more about Nian traveling to our world so that he can return and make his own world better. This is an interesting and amusing children’s fantasy novel, which interweaves the voices of two boys – one is Nian who is sent against his will to the House of Truth in a mysterious fantasy land ; the other is Jacob, an ordinary English boy. Their two lives collide when Nian finds a way through from his world to Jacob’s. There are the inevitable culture clashes, difficulties with language and food, plus danger is the shape of a pursuing guard who wants to drag Nian back.

Not a lot happened, basic predictable plot, few very visible women (and the ones that were shown were pretty negatively portrayed).
