"When you grow up, you'll find out that to remember things that you've done as a little boy is part of your history."

On My Way, P. 13

I would give at least two and a half stars to this story, and very possibly the full three.

I have the feeling that this book is going to become for me, over time, one of those wonderful, rare books that is so dear to one's heart and soul that one only grows to love it even more deeply. I love the young Tomie and I love re-experiencing his life with him. It's...more

This is the third in Tomie dePaola's autobiographical series. In this one, young Tomie finishes kindergarten, worries about who his first grade teacher will be, worries about his baby sister who has pneumonia, and gets to spend a day at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Tomie also steals the show at a dance recital and again at a "tiny tot wedding" put on at his brother's birthday party. Of course my favorite part is right at the end when Tomie sneaks his school reading book home so he can learn t...more

This book begins with Tomie's infant sister having pneumonia! It's very sad. Thankfully, she recovers and stories of The World's Fair and summer fun follow. It concludes with Tomie entering First Grade...finally! He 'learns' to read and is able to get his library card! I work part-time at the Meriden Public Library, so this is very special to me!

My kids love this series (as do I)--very entertaining out loud read. My 7 year old says to me tonight, "Mom, I wish I was Tomie DePaola." It was a nice way to encourage him to write down things about his own life to remember in his own journal to be able to tell stories of his life someday. Looking forward to starting the next one in the series.

This is an interesting memoir of Tomie dePaola's childhood and the first few months in his new house. Overall, it's an interesting story and it's not too long. Our girls like the books in this series (26 Fairmount Avenue), but they certainly aren't their favorites. I think they much prefer Mr. dePaola's picture books. Still, I think this offers an interesting perspective of life in 1940 in the United States and his experiences growing up.

We enjoyed reading this book together and learned a lot a...more

3rd in the series - which we are loving. There is quite a dramatic chapter about his baby sister having pneumonia. It is done in a very child friendly way but it is still scary and I know Bea couldn't have handled it when she was younger.

The series continues as enjoyable as ever! Who knew that Tomie dePaola was as talented an actor/reader as an author/illustrator? Delightful!

I'm really enjoying this series. Tomie is such a precocious boy. This book had some serious stuff in with the humorous when his baby sister gets pneumonia. The trip to the World's Fair is interesting as well. My favorite part is him learning to read.
Connie
This is the third autobiography written by Tomie and he is only entering first grade. I look forward to more!

Third in the autobiographical account of Tomie dePaola's childhood. The kids really enjoy them and the quality has been consistent. Not overly exciting, but quiet, calm fun.

It's fascinating to learn about the early years of one of my favorite childhood authors.
