When the earnest Paul and Jenny marry - their wedding being the first do of the title - the worlds of their very different parents collide with consequences that are hilarious and tragic at the same time. I didn't like many of the characters, but managed to sympathise with them none the less. I've only jsut found out that this was turned into a television series with David Jason as Ted Simcock which to me seems a perfect piece of casting. I suspect that may tell you all you need to know.

I stumbled across this book after seeing the TV series from 1990, and it lived up to expectations. Nobbs takes us through half a dozen or more "dos" with fine attention to character dropping them into the most excrutiatingly embarrassing circumstances and leaving them to wriggle before half-extricating them. Great fun.
