Robert Owen, born in the second half of the 18th century in the United Kingdom, encouraged the radical reform of society. He became leader of the movement known as Owenism, which is, sadly, largely forgotten today. The movement established utopian, cooperative communities, the most well known of which, in the United States, was in Indiana, and while the communities eventually faded away, many of his ideas were a couple of hundred years ahead of their time. John Fletcher Clews Harrison (born 1921) is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Sussex. A specialist on Victorian Britain, he served as an officer in the British Army during the Second World War afterwards teaching at the University of Leeds, then the University of Wisconsin before joining the faculty at the University of Sussex.
