In her kindergarten, Miss Effi Barr had no sun-splashed play area, no freshly filled sand boxes, and no ink-blot tests for her children. Instead, she had an ancient brick kitchen, a yard barn and tool shed, and secretely the entire world. A child learned how to live politely in that world: how to shake hands and when to smile. He learned harsh truths and gracious ways and ...more

This is a story about an older woman who takes in children and teaches them how to act like gentlemen and basic skills like dusting, sweeping, and how to enter a room. She is very stern and never shows emotions, but she is respected by the kids and they enjoy her. This was an ok book/short story that I read for literature class in school. Led to an interesting discussion.

Every single person ought to spend a formative summer with Miss Effi Barr. Coffee should only be drunk black, you should be able to tell a stranger a false name as easily as you should your true one, and parents don't need to know everything.

I can't believe I gave this book away.

Classic story- a great read- started reading it to my 5-year-old without knowledge of the ending...I left out some of the details of the "putting to sleep" part but he could related with the concept given that we have relatively recently had to put our cat to sleep.

It's such an interesting and awesome book! I loved it because of the actual meaning and how it represented kids being treated as adults. Miss Effie is totally crazy but has very proper fancy manners. She represents a good model/idol!
