A well written and comprehensively researched book. I knew little about the man apart from the fact that he locked his wife up for committing adultery.

The author describes an astute man who played his cards pretty close to his chest. He had a reasonably successful career, fighting in the many battles in Europe. Ragnhild Marie Hatton was an historian who specialized in seventeenth and eighteenth century Europe. After moving to London from Norway she taught at the London School of Economics from 1949 until her retirement.
