Long enough to be a well-told story, yet short enough for readers not to fall asleep. I intentionally took the book from my roommate's bookshelf as a type of sleeping pill when the computer was not available, keeping in mind the idea that "this is gonna another stupid love story". I even kept calling it "Socrates in Hell" as my personal habit of sarcasm for love tends to grow years after years.

The book turned out to be great! In terms of small details, Katayama's story telling is unbelievable, c...more

Romance
Socrates in Love follows the story of Sakutaro Matsumoto as he falls in love with his classmate Aki Hirose. Full of innocent love, it’s a typical high school romance until Aki falls ill with leukemia. It is a tale of young love, devotion through difficult times, and loss. The tale is somewhat different from other romances, in that it is told from the male perspective. The characters are well developed, even some of the side characters such as Sakutaro’s grandfather and b...more

As a one-shot, this story leaves much to be desired. The plot develops slowly at first, introducing the reader to the two main characters. But soon after that, the story pounces into full-speed mode and shudders to a finish after an unsatisfying build.

If this had been a serial manga instead of a one-shot, the story might have had time to shape itself into something worthy of reading. As is, I'd check out the text-only version of this story (which swept Japan, yadda yadda) before touching the ma...more

I have a theory about the (many many) stories that involve a man losing his woman - it's basically wish-fulfilment, as the man needs to be free in order to have his adventures, a little like children losing their parents in fairy tales. This works quite well usually (especially any action movie in which a guy revenges his dead wife, see Steven Segal in anything), but here not so much. Katayama's novel is a genuinely touching story of young loss, with shades of Murakami's Norwegian Wood. For me i...more

El protagon...more

No sabia que me podia...more

I rarely- make that "never"- read Shojo. Manga, yes, but never the kind targeted at pre-teen/ teenage girls. I'm glad I picked up the manga version of "Socrates in Love".

It's drawn in one of the styles that I find really pleasing to read (sorry, don't know what the style is called), and the text comes from this novel (by Kyoichi Katayama; the manga is drawn by Kazumi Kazui. I don't know who adapted the text). And it's a heart-wrenching, bittersweet story about a young love ended when the girl, A...more

Socrates in Love is about an average guy named Sakutaro who begins a relationship with the prettiest girl in his class, Aki. They date for two years without a hitch. Then, Aki is diagnosed with leukemia, and Sakutaro shows, more than ever, how much he truly loves Aki.

Okay, that synopsis did not do this book any justice. This is an all-time bestseller in Japan. There have been many adaptations, including a movie and a manga. Really, I'm sure if I lived in Japan everyone would have heard of this b...more

I've read the text version not the manga but I guess it's better to read in text version because you can create your own image of the scenes narrated. It's a simple romantic tragedy story, cliché and not really new except that it's narrated in male's perspective. But I gave it a 4 star rating in spite of it being cliché because the author picked the right words to express the characters' feelings, you can feel the love and pain inside the book. The book to me at first was boring but as I turn th...more

"Io morivo e resuscitavo ogni giorno. Era...more

Delicato, tenero, doloroso e...more

So I’m sitting in a German-speaking country, and see a Japanese guy reading the new Haruki Murakami book, in Japanese, on the tram. I make a comment which sparks a conversation which reveals he hated _Norwegian Wood_ and said everyone should really be reading *this* book.
Well, as I’m not 16 years old (and neither was this guy), and I also feel that most 16 year olds would not handle themselves the way the characters in this book did, I was not at all impressed. Typical “love” and “loved one die...more

Now I know that One Liter of Tears the series was inspired by this book.

Aki and Saku have been friends since Junior high, but they've grown as a couple once they reached Senior High. Their love for each other is unlike the usual teenage love. Saku and Aki had a love so pure that I began to think that they were very mature persons. It's like they weren't teenagers in the first place. Aki was diagnosed to have Leukemia and now their time together is running short.

This is the kind of book that you...more

This is never the kind of book that I usually like. This had everything stereotypical to something in a Kdrama. I didn't think that I would like this book. but to my surprise i did. and i loved it. I loved it because this was a coming of age story as well as a love story. Emotions and bonds between every character felt real and had a lot of wit. The descriptions weren't anything fancy but did a beautiful job at creating vivid imagery. Don't go in thinking this book is just a love story. although...more

This is a beautifully written book about first love and the tragedy of losing it to illness. Anyone who has ever know somebody going through a life threatening illness can really sympathize with what Sakutaro is going through with Aki.

Sure, the two main characters in this book are young. That doesn't take away from how they feel. Love is love no matter what age and losing that loved one is hard.

Honestly, the only fault I could find with this book is that I wish it had been longer. I would have...more

I will always be re-reading this book over and over again because that's how AMAZING it is. I rarely get into the realistic drama stories but this one had me pulled in and really thinking about stuff. Katayama's words seemed to translate beautifully into English, to which I thank the translator for doing such a great job.

(view spoiler)[ Maybe it's the fact that you actually know from the very beginning that Aki isn't going to make it, that makes the story even more meaningful and heartbreaking...more

“In spite of all the progress we seem to have made, human emotions stay the same. Deep inside our hearts, we don’t change very much. This poem was written two thousand years ago or more. It’s from a time long before the quatrains and other formal styles you’ve learned in school were established. And yet, even today, we can understand the feelings of people from that time. You don’t need education or scholarship for that. These feelings can be understood by anybody, I think.” 4 people liked it
