Recommends it for: Gluttons for punishment.
It would be hard to imagine liking a children's book less. Rescue me from this form: overly hip interpretations of fairy tales and fables. My kids were especially displeased by the completely uninspired use of photo collage and the gruesomely rendered conclusion.

This book is a story of a hen who thinks the sky is falling, and decides it is her mission to inform the king. She picks up many friends along the way. Eventually, all the animals come to a fox, who leads them into a cave. There, he attacks them all one by one, until he gets to the hen. She had been so distracted by her mission that she had forgotten to lay her egg that day. Realizing this gave her the energy and motivation that she needed to get out of the fox's grasp fast enough. The story end ...more

This book was hilarious. The illustrations were so unique and had real life pictures and scenes behind the cartoons. In the end, the fox ends up eating a bunch of birds so that might be a little gruesome for young children. This book also played with words and phonemic awareness a lot. It turned everything into a rhyme even though they weren't real word. So I liked that part of it.

Fans of Kevin O'Malley will certainly enjoy this. This is a wild retelling of the story of Chicken Little with strong jazz lingo peppered throughout. Honestly, the whole book is a little strange but in the best way imaginable. I really liked this book, as did the children to whom I read. This is a nice addition to any fractured fairy tale unit.

This book tries WAY too hard to stand out. Instead of feeling like a fresh new twist on a classic fairy tale, it feels like a chicken dinner that has been sitting out in the sun all day -- even Foxy Loxy wouldn't touch it.

I thought with so many changes and additions, the ending might have been a bit more upbeat. It wasn't. And the collage illustrations were not especially interesting or engaging.

Okay, weird version, more modern version of the original tale HENNY-PENNY.
Not a fan that the fox still eats most, not all of the animals. Was going to use this for story time but decided not to.

What do you when the sky is falling and you are trapped by a fox? Henny-Penny shows the way!
Published: 2000, Scholastic Press
Age: 4-8

Realistic colorful pictures of fowl searching for the king to inform him the sky is falling. Henny-penny, cocky-locky, ducky-lucky, gander-lander, turky-lurky, and the others shake, rattle, and roll through stonehedge, the leaning tower of pisa, the pyramids, and other landmarks until the foxy-loxy leads them to the dank, dark cave and plays an evil skanky prank on them. The ending is gruesome for very young kids, but older ones may enjoy the hip, rock a

The illustrations are odd, and the hip-hop lyrics are quite a mouthful. I think if you loved the wild and crazy language, this would be fun to read. And read with the proper expression, it would be a hoot to listen to. For me, though, it just falls flat.

This is a great remake of the classic tale. Henny Penny and her friends believe the sky is falling and on their way to tell the king they run into cunning Foxy Loxy. This book is full of beautiful pictures and can be used in lesson about being nice.
This book was tough to read to a bunch of 1st graders due to all the rhyming names of the barnyard fowls. An old story with bright illustrations and new words - Chickabunga!

Stunning picture book version of the classic tale that uses cut-out picture collages to make tell the story. Bright and realistic. Fun for youger and older kids.
