This is the kind of book that is hard to put down and when you do, you can't stop thinking about it. The plot is simple. A group of Breton fishermen who get their living off the coasts of Iceland, and their families who are left behind for most of the year waiting, watching...and praying .

Most of the story centers around two characters, young Sylvester who is recruited for the French navy and his cousin of sorts, Yann, a strong, powerful able seaman who, in his late twenties is being pressured t

Proust once named Loti as one of his favorite writers, which is enough to pique my interest.

Iceland fisherman by Loti, Pierre
Tales of the fisherman from Iceland and the struggles they face when they go out to sea.
Also about those who wait for them on land.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Second I read in French - was of course hard for me to understand everything.
I did not follow all the heavy descriptive language - but just the story, which is such a sad one...

While it was lovely to step back into 1880s Brittany, this little love story made me truly wonder how Pierre Loti was accepted into the Academie Francaise while Gustav Flaubert never received this recognition. On the one hand, he created a setting which allowed the reader to travel into a different place. I'm sure this made a scintillating read for Victorian audiences. He also built his brand well, traveling the world, leading a rather bohemian lifestyle and accumulating interesting tidbits of h ...more

This was required reading for one of my French Lit Classes in college. At the time it was a bit dreadful, mainly because it was compulsory and of course the fact that Loti slips in a bit of Bretagnesque dialog. That aside I have spent too much time thinking about the way he has described the sky (look this was all in French, I have never read the English translation) and the sea and the longings of his characters, so I have recently retrieved my copy from the bookshelf and although my French is ...more

Louis Marie-Julien Viaud (January 14, 1850 - June 10, 1923) was a writer, who used the pseudonym Pierre Loti.

Viaud was born in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, France, to an old Protestant family.[1] His education began in Rochefort, but at the age of seventeen, being destined for the navy, he entered the naval school in Brest and studied on Le Borda. He gradually rose in his profession, attaining th
