Twelve Times Lost
by
Kevin Fanning (Goodreads Author)
"I woke up driving and screaming. There was a row of headlights in front of me, and engines and horns everywhere."
Partly dream, partly a rumination on the effects of memory, this haunting cycle of interconnected flashbacks links fantasy and "reality" in unsettling and unforgettable ways.

I read this last week in preparation for the release of the Location Scout and it was most excellent. I am really, REALLY not a short story person. I like being whacked over the head with a thick book which I will then bury my nose in for a very long time. However, Kevin Fanning writes stories I not only like, but keep close to me for a long time.
Okay, once again these stories are so slight they’re deceptive. You turn a page and it’s done; until, a minute later you think, “Wait, what was that sentence?” and you go back, and it’s a hell of a sentence, and you read it again, and then the whole story, and then the whole story again. And then you think you’ve shaken it, but you’re thinking about it while driving, and over dinner, and you read it again before you fall asleep, and when you wake up and remember your dreams, they sound a lot l...more
I think I originally must have read this around 2005 but I read it again in celebration of KF's new book, THE LOCATION SCOUT. The two deal with similar themes, which is to say, if you have ever been lost or have been in one place and not moving and still felt lost, these are the tonics for you.

I feel like I'm supposed to give this book 5 stars because I know Kevin will read it. But. Um. Saying "it was amazing" is a little too much for me. But it was great. 4.9 stars out of 5.
Beautiful imagery. The stories exist in my mind somewhere in-between the imaginary memories I collect from movies and books and comics and music and the memories that are probably mostly real.

I really like this author. However this book is a bit confusing.
Very cool and odd little stories. Like a series of films co-written by David Lynch and Atom Egoyan.
