This book is not as detailed as the Thru-Hiker's Handbook, but it is easier to read for a general idea of what to expect. It also gives tips on what to pack (and why and how), which the TH Handbook doesn't really do. I would say to start with this one for a general background of the route, mental preparation, and some good gear info, then use the TH Handbook for specific route planning.
