I WISH this were my favorite quote from the book:
Some ideas are not born of logic and good sense. They are made of clouds and cobwebs. They sprout from nowhere and feed on excitement, sprinkled with adventure-juice and the sweet flavour of the forbidden. The psyche moves from the realms of the ordinary and takes a delicate step towards the territories of the unknown. We know that we shouldn't and that is exactly what we do.
However. Unfortunately.

The odds seemed stacked against me liking this book - the 90s is my least favourite era, I don't think anyone other than Joyce and Faulkner should attempt stream-of-consciousness narrative and I dislike hippies (sorry no offence to anyone). So an experimental book written in 1997 about two teens with the gypsy blues? I would say no thanks! But I'm glad I gave this novel a go - this novel charmed me over and I had to agree at the end that yes this is a gorgeous book!

I inhaled this book, it's so gorgeously told, so vibrant, and sensory. I could see the waves on the beach, smell the salt air, taste the pasta and porridge, and feel Rosie's intense longing for something to happen. It made me want to pack everything up in a blue VW van and head for Australia, to road trip up and down the coast.
Guitar Highway Rose is a coming of age story and it really captures how it feels to be a teen. To have that longing for change and control over your life.

I absolutely love this book.
I think I first read it in 2007/08 (Around the time I first read Looking For Alaska and many other books that stuck with me), and I've just re-read it at least twice a year since.
I need to get a copy of my own, it amuses the librarian at my school everytime she sees I've picked it up again.
I don't know what to say. I love where it's set, I love Asher and Rose and Rose's best friend's relationship with her Mum, similar to my friend's.

Guitar Highway Rose written by Brigid Lowry, is part road story, part love story of two teenagers trying to find an adventure. One is Rosie Moon, who is bored with her life in Perth. Her parents don't seem to understand her and she hungers for something more. The other is Asher Fielding and he is new in town, and tired from his parents recent divorce and misses home more everyday. When the two cross paths, they find the feeling of wanting to get out is mutual and they decide to run away togeth...more
I'm sorry, but all the run-on sentence/paragraphs without any commas or anything even drove me nutty! This book totally brought me back to 1997 considering all the music and fashion mentioned (in which I was a teenager at that time as well). It was nice that they gave you so many perspectives in this book. Sadly though, I was bored out of my mind. I was glad this was such a fast and short read. I couldn't even attach myself to the characters. I was extremely surprised to find that this book did...more
I was really excited when I stumbled upon this book at the used book store. The name of the book stuck with me and when I saw it, I snatched it right up. I'd been wanting to try a book written from an Australian author for a while now.
The format was very different from anything I've ever read and I wasn't sure I'd be able to relate enough to the characters as the story is written in small snippets. But it ended up being pretty easy to follow and a quick read.

Really a nice story by Ms Lowry, not much about guitars and roses but about two teens who set of too discover the world on their own terms and run amok of reality. Rosie Moon is about as real as one can get, especially in her reactions to family traumas and even more so when they involve her. The ending set me off though; but upon looking back I can accept that it may have been the only way to make all right-- and so it will be. Here is a decent teen adventure novel that packs a respectable mora...more
guitar highway rose (allen&unwin), by brigid lowry, was published in 1997.

Rose is waiting for life to happen; to break free from her mum’s suffocating way of caring. She wanted her dad to do something about his suffering marriage to her mum.
Asher wanted nothing to do with Perth. He’d rather be back to his old hunting ground where everything was normal and familiar.
This is a story of two kids who found themselves on the run from a petty crime Asher was accused of. But mostly, they wanted freedom. Along their adventure, while their parents were going insane with worry...more

Brigid Lowry brings us Guitar Highway Rose a novel told in everything from prose to poetry to stream of consciousness writing and in multiple viewpoints. We primarily hear from Rosie and Asher, the two teens the story revolves around, but their parents and friends and even the people they meet also get their say.
The story flows surprisingly well for something that jumps around so often from character to character, from style to style. Once you are caught up in it, the story weaves a web around...more

This book is about two teenagers -- Rosie and Asher -- who decide to run away together, Asher because he's been falsely accused of theft at school, and Rosie because she's tired of being "good." Brigid tells the story in little snapshots that take you inside the minds of everyone in the book -- Rosie and Asher, the people they meet while they're hitchhiking, their teachers, their parents, their siblings, etc. While I could appreciate the experimental story-telling and the little details that mad...more

This is not a nice book, the story is superficial, but the most irritating thing about it, is that it loses connection between the story and the way it's written.

This was the book that, in my first year of high school, introduced me to a more "experimental" form of writing. It was so very different from the classics I was used to reading (Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, Silver Brumby and the ilk...), and 'spoke' to me in a way hadn't experienced before.
Of course many, many books have followed in its footsteps since then, but I'll always remember this book as the one which broadened my idea of what a book could be.

This was a great story. We had to read it for English and for English i wasn't expecting a book like this. This was a really good stroy. I loved how she changed from peoples POV and how there was even 3rd person and random bits in between. I Loved how we got intot he mind of the two main charactes Asher aan Rosie. Glad i read it for sure! :D

This book seemed to promise me everything I love in YA: road trips, music, and romance. I couldn't even get 10 pages in, the writing style irritated me (especially Asher's parts, written all in lowercase and with no punctuation.) I'm disappointed because I had high hopes for this book, but I'm sending it straight back to the library.

Beautiful writing which was unfortunately marred by the actual structure of the book. The voice of the male character's thoughts was, for me, very disjointed and while I get that this may have been a deliberate ploy to show the character's struggle and confusion to settle in, it ultimately bothered me to the point of distraction. That being said, I'd definitely still read more of Brigid Lowry's work.
I was a little disappointed of this book, the stream of consensus confused me while i was reading through the book. I wasn't very intrigued in this novel. It had a great story line, but the stream of conciseness used in the novel confused me as well as the book was not formated in chapters. Over than that is was a great story.
i loved the unique format with different sections in different POV's instead of chapters. I liked the characters, and identified with them in their rebellion from my teen years. I enjoyed the road trip and growing sweet and innocent relationship. I didn't care much for the ending, but the majority of the book was fun to read.
At the time in my youth i loved this book so I'll give it four stars as it really made my English lessons a lot more fun ( this was one we read and reviewed in class) I don't know how I'd feel about it now but then again it isn't really written for adults .. So teen ages do read because you will enjoy !

Brigid Lowry was born in New Zealand into a rather strange but very creative family. Here she learned a love of books, too many swear words and how to cook a decent omelette. Brigid's early, rather awful poetry was made into a small book by her father, a printer and typographer, and sold to kindly relatives for two and sixpence a copy. Thus her writing career was launched, but it took about twenty...more
