I like Kundra because he doesn’t imprison me in a fastened frame of a classic narration. Short stories from Milan Kundera, author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being. These stories are fiction, of course, with the subject matter typically dealing with romance, sex, and relationships. It's an easy, enjoyable read, but there's a genius to it, in that the stories contain so many lessons, that if they weren't fictionalized, the book could appropriately be labeled self-help, philosophy, or psychology. (Most of the stories contain some combination of the three.) In this sense, Kundera re...more Short stories from Milan Kundera, author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being. These stories are fiction, of course, with the subject matter typically dealing with romance, sex, and relationships. It's an easy, enjoyable read, but there's a genius to it, in that the stories contain so many lessons, that if they weren't fictionalized, the book could appropriately be labeled self-help, philosophy, or psychology. (Most of the stories contain some combination of the three.) In this sense, Kundera reminds me of Dostoevsky. But Kundera is more cerebral and observation based; whereas Dostoevsky seems to be more from the gut, with perhaps deeper, but less widely canvassed probing.

Despite all the sex, Kundera's world is not happy one -- nor is it a sad one. Like all of our lives, the lives of his characters go back and fourth between happiness, sadness, and desperation, with varying levels of confidence inbetween -- some due to situation and external circumstance, some due to personal psychology. They constantly go through changes in perception, and undergo new realizations. Some of these paradigm shifts are foolish, while some are accurate and profound: our misunderstandings of others, ourselves, and our relationships, yes: but the stories are also about our misunderstandings of situations, and our screwed up concepts of life in general.

I wonder if a great book can altogether avoid the subject of death. Death is a part of a pulsing existentialism that permeates my three favorite stories from this collection: Symposium (read this when you're drinking wine: it may be the funniest short story I've ever read: light, happenstance irony, but with a masterfully profound ending), Let the Old Dead Make Room for the Young Dead, and Eduard and God (the book's last story, which has an intelligent, life affirming intensity to it, making it the perfect closing to this impressive collection).

It's true that some of these stories are heartbreaking, and, some of the relationships within them, fucked up. But frankly, relationships are fucked up, and life is unfortunately, sometimes heartbreaking.

Brilliant work here: I can't wait to read my next Kundera.

I think the short story is the perfect vehicle for Milan Kundera. Writing a tight, focused narrative is definitely not one of his strengths as a writer, and these stories aren't long enough to get the reader perturbed by that. Also, he can't get overly preachy within the confines of a 40-page short story.

را در خود داشته باشد اما در عوض میلان کوندرا با نگاه موشکافانه و مثل همیشه تحلیل گرایانه اش سوء تفاهمها و فاصله های بسیار را در درک زوجهای داستان از هم به خاننده نشان می دهد.
به نظرم آنچه که در این 4 داستان مشترک می باشد،این است که
مردانِ (دروغگوی)این داستان ها با قربانی کردن عاطفی زنانِ مقابلشان به شناختی دیگر از رابطه(بر خلاف آنچه در ابتدا تصور می کردند)می رسند و برایم جالب است که میلان کوندرا این چنین توانمند و هنرمندانه یک حرف را در شکل های گوناگون ،روایت می کند!

Kundera writes with an elastic quality that moves the work like a snapping waistband. I appreciate quite heartily the oddity of structure in “Symposium” and how it becomes successful at capturing a reader in spite of/because of this. Plus, with sentences as sublime as “Through the air floated only important words, and Flajsman said to himself that love has but one measure, and that is death. At the end of true love is death, and only the love that ends in death is love.” Or this: “However much h...more Kundera writes with an elastic quality that moves the work like a snapping waistband. At the end of true love is death, and only the love that ends in death is love.” Or this: “However much he ran after girls, above all he was seeking a comforting, boundless, redeeming embrace, which would save him from the horrifying relativity of the freshly discovered world.” When Kundera writes these insights, they are framed in absurd circumstances and the work has a grim quality that also breaks sarcastic and is darkly humorous, but like the use of a double negative to indicate a positive, I believe Kundera communicates with a truthful sincerity made so much the richer by contrast and makes the sincerity tolerable or even welcome.
My favorite story in the collection is “Eduard and God” which is hilarious, ridiculous, and ultimately moving. There is a paragraph that is so well written and well placed I gasped: “As she uttered the words of prayer, she gazed up at him if he were God himself. He watched her with growing pleasure: in front of him was kneeling the directress, being humiliated by a subordinate; in front of him a naked revolutionary was being humiliated by prayer; in front of him a praying woman was being humiliated by her nakedness. “ The fact that the end result of this allows Kundera to gleefully play up the three-fold structure, the triune structure, and that Kundera more gleefully enables the protagonist’s errection by the witness of this three-fold humiliation shows mastery, in my opinion.
“. . .a man lives a sad life when he cannot take anything or anyone seriously!” is the thought stands out to me as the story resolves with Eduard’s deep sadness and the face of God emerging from that sadness and prompting the character to smile: “He is smiling and his smile is happy. Please keep him in your memory with this smile.” The humor in having God live in the deepest sadness and Eduard being happy at knowing God, thereby distancing himself from God is a great laugh on alienation, especially in light of taking things “seriously.” Given the times and the constraints of the era, this should be read both for the historical/social value as well as for the literary merit.

This book is amusing--in the very dark and twisted sense of the word. A black comedy when it comes to the relationship of lovers, the unhappily married, or those singles who are on that endless search. It is the irony, the insecurity, and the yearning of in love. Or of not in love. Laughable Loves pens the delusions that we hold dear in love and takes you on a bipolar ride through the heads of protagonists who don't know up from down.

So, I actually finished this book about two days ago. I never came to write a review. There's no good reason for my delay. I had time to sit and reflect; I had time to sit and write, but I sort of just shut down about the whole thing.

Kundera managed to leave me a little cold here. Maybe it's the weather, all the snow and wind and stuff, all of which I normally love. Our dog likes to roll around on her back in the snow. I like that too. This stuff is like catnip to me.

But for some reason December is a notoriously bad month for me to do any quality reading. Everything feels bitter and slightly detached and I wind up grumpier about anything I'm reading than I might be if I had read them during different parts of the year. I'm sure someone out there is all, "Dude, it's called S.A.D.!" To that I say, "Yo, eff you!" No, not really. But having known people to truly suffer from S.A.D. and knowing how I feel about other things going on besides what I'm reading, I know I'm actually doing a-okay. Thank you, couch-psychologists of the GR-world.

The stories that make up Laughable Loves are all very tragicomedy, which might have been my first mistake right now. I really suck at tragicomedy because I tend to think too much, or think in the wrong directions, or something. I haven't quite figured that out yet, but that's okay. The point is, that's what these stories are. They are about relationships and sex. Like, a lot of sex. All the different characters have some sort of obsession, fascination, desire for sexual relationships, but not in your typical "Wow, I'm horny!" sorts of way. Kundera offers a bit of a twist on these sexual interests; sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. But I probably shouldn't have read this book at this time because all it wound up doing was make me a little sleepy. Kundera has never struck me as being soporific before, but it happened this time. He'd probably kick my ass if he read that. Sorry, dude.(less)

When I read "The Unbeareable Lightness of the Being" when I was, like, sixteen, I knew that was one of the books I'd never forget in live. I haven't. And with this "Laughable Loves" I found at a thrift book market in the street, I'm even more convinced now that Kundera is a master of storytelling and one of my favourite authors ever.

Este libro es una recopilación de historias amorosas de lo más ridículas, como lo dice su título. Cada una de las historias está embellecida por la ironía y el sarcasmo tan esencial en cada novela de Kundera que he leído .

I read Unbearable Lightness a few years ago and absolutely loved it, might even call it my favorite book. So my first instinct when I finished was to read another Milan Kundera but when I was looking through reviews online the general consensus seemed to be that his writing style gets too repetitive and the second book you read will not seem nearly as good as the first book, regardless of which.

This book is definitely a quick read yet very thought-provoking. It sort of makes you confront things you might otherwise think about, as well. He very much takes something, a topic, and expands on it very eloquently. What he does with the topics in the book really makes it a real emotional experience. If you have read The Unbearable Lightness of Being, like me, or any other book by Milan Kundera you really have to read this one.

أشك ان أحدا فينا - هذا الجنس المتنطع بالنبالة- لم يجد ذكورته تفضح امام عينيه بهذه الفجاجة حتى ليحمدن حمدا كثيرا أنه يقرأ بصوت منخفض ثم لينقلب بعد ذلك مطلقا ضحكة مكتومة على ألاعيبه التي ظنها محكمة.. هل كنت بمثل هذه السذاجة يا إلهي!

Little white lies turn into existential crises, and hefty debates arise between knowledge and truth: It's Kundera. As one of his earlier works, Laughable Loves is more simple and honest than others that I've read, and therefore extremely subtle its nuances. It's not as beautiful as his later writing, but there's beauty in that.
