A big fan of WWI aviation, I've been collecting the G-8 reprints for years but finally got around to reading some. They are much more about espionage than air combat, although there seems to be some aerial action in each. The bulk of these stories would fall into the pulp category of "weird menace" rather than historical adventure, featuring fast-paced over-the-top action, coincidences, and narrow escapes. Lugers on every page. If you're a stickler for accuracy these will drive you nuts, but ...more

The Bat Staffel
Oddly enough, the main story isn't what earns the four stars. This is a three star story at best, with a Mary Sue of a main character in G-8 taking the spotlight over the more interesting characters of Bull Martin and and Nippy Weston. As with most pulps, there is a great heart here, with intrigue and WWI flying and spy games, but ultimately we never really feel that G-8 is in any danger, so the drama is lessened to something like a 90s action film. There are great moments of in

The story originally came from a pulp magazine, G-8 and His Battle Aces: The Bat Staffel, and was published in October 1933. This was the first in over a 100 stories about G-8. Pulp magazines were not known for always having the best writing or plotting. I gave the book two stars for having a couple of very stupid situations. One example, G-8 the master spy is in makeup posing as a German officer and has just delivered a secret order. Another German officer recognizes he is missing a scar and is ...more

Pulps! I’m surprised that a series of pulp novels once so popular can be so bad, or so it seems from this one. I grant the improbable plot and the impossible impressiveness of the title character and his aides. My problems are the lumpy writing, that the title character is not interesting, and the impossibility that he is such a master of disguise, perfect impersonator of voice, and speaks German with such a flawless accent that the fools WW1 era German soldiers into thinking he is someone they ...more

The first book in the G-8 pulp series is a fun romp, with all the failings and strong points of 1930s pulp. Strong points: the imagery and action is spectacular, the story hurtles forward at a breakneck speed. Failings: the writing is sloppy and repetitive, the author tells us a few too many times, in the most superlative terms, how awesome our heroes are. To call the story unbelievable or unrealistic would be to miss the point of the whole exercise: this is steampunk before anyone had a name ...more

Need to add a special "pulp" or "nostalgia" shelf for this and probably others. My dad grew up reading these as a kid, and when they reprinted some of them in the late '60's, be bought the first couple and I know I read at least this one - and who could forget those classic Steranko covers?

Otherwise, don't remember a thing about it - but I do remember dad getting kind of goofy excited about seeing them again, and telling me who G-8 and Nippy Weston and manservant Battle were...miss you dad.

Not the greatest pulp novel ever, but still great. Lots of action, good introduction of the main characters for the series: G-8, Bull, Nippy, and Battle. The plot seems trite now, but it was probably much more original 80 years ago when the story was new. Looking forward to reading more G-8 stories now that they are coming out in e-book format.
