I love it when people share their favorite books with me. You receive one as a gift and it is like getting a little piece of that person together with the book. For my birthday this year my sister shared this little gem with me. She said it was a favorite book of her five year old triplets. Now it is a favorite here at my house, too.

I have to smile at the way FLUFFY made the rounds through my family. The day it arrived in the mail, I read it to my two little boys at lunch. Th More...

This is one of my older niece's favorite books. I can tell, because she takes it out from the school library every other week. She's going to be SO thrilled to get it for Christmas this year, I just know it!

So, here we have this porcupine. And when he was born, his doting parents went through a whole list of normal names - Spike, Quillian, Lance - before settling on, doncha know it, "Fluffy". No, I don't know what they were thinking either... and neither does their son. Wit More...

This is far from being my favorite Helen Lester/Lynn Munsinger collaboration, but it's cute.

A pair of porcupine parents get it into their head to name their new baby "Fluffy," and hilarity/despair ensues. Fluffy the porcupine is really upset by the fact that he's not actually fluffy. He tries to make himself fluffy by covering himself in marshmallows and shaving cream, but nothing works.

One day, he meets a rhino who is determined to give him a hard time...until More...

Illustrated by Lynn Munsinger

PK-3

From baby to childhood, Munsinger’s illustrations of Fluffy make ample use of his unruly quills. Fluffy’s facial expressions are a key to unlocking the text as he endeavors to live up to his name. He never looks truly happy until he learns to laugh at the irony and discovers a kindred spirit in a rhinoceros named Hippo. The gentle, amusing text takes a sensitive subject (fear of ridicule) and makes it accessible to very young children. More...

Helen Lester has a knack of taking difficult situations and making them funny and acceptable. Children can relate to her unique characters and the predicaments they get themselves into. In this story, there is a porcupine named Fluffy who just doesn't understand why he was given that name. He tries everything he can think of, including covering himself with marshmallows to make him look more "fluffy", but he just isn't. Then Fluffy meets a rhinoceros and these two, very different f More...

How many adults are there who once thought their parents had given them the wrong name as a child? Some children just don't like their names and go around announcing they are no longer Jaidyn or Parker but will now be called Michelle or George. A Porcupine Named Fluffy is a book about just such a character.

This may end up being my favorite Lester book. Funny all throughout. Fabulous illustrations to go with the story. A fun twist near the end. And a happy ending (with even a moral, if you choose to see it!). Great potential for a storytime read-aloud, probably for school-age. A fun lap-read, too. And the more I think on it, the more I think preschool might get it, too.

2/1/12 I had decided the day before storytime that this book might just be too long for my preschool groups. I left it More...

I read this book every night - EVERY NIGHT! Yes, every night. And every night it is still as funny as it was the night before. And I'm talking doubled-over, tears rolling down your cheeks, "oh, please stop!" funny. Should they name him Spike? I ask. "NO!" my four-year-old shouts, "that's too common!" What about Lance? I ask. "No!" he shouts, "That's too fierce!" How about Needleroozer? I inquire. "Needlerooster!" he repeats and dissolve More...

This book has some of the funniest illustrations I have ever in my whole life seen.

When Fluffy becomes soggy: Funny.

Fluffy eating marshmallows: Funny.

Fluffy dressed as a bunny: FUNNY!

Also, Fluffy's almost name of Needleroozer is AWESOME! I wish I were called Needleroozer. I may start telling people to call me Needleroozer.

This is a good way to start talking about names and what they mean. As we know, children learn to spell their names first and learning their name has personal meaning to them and in this story Fluffy wanted his name to mean something to him. Friendship can be a topic for discussion from this book as well.

This book is so cute! I used to read this over and over when I was little, and I still love it today. It is great for the younger grades; they would probably think it's hilarious! It could be used to teach differences and how opposites attract. I love the ending with the rhino being named "hippo".

I always liked this story every since I was a kid. I thought it was a funny story and I like how Fluffy tries so many different ways to make himself "fluffy." It would be a good book to read to younger chilfren and it is a good story of friendship between two unlikely animals/people.

A porcupine named Fluffy....how funny would that be? At some point, most of us feel that our names do not reflect our personality. Imagine being a porcupine and having to be called Fluffy. It was almost too much for this poor little guy to bear...until he meets a friend.

This book is about a porcupine named Fluffy who becomes friends with a rhinoceros named Hippo. This book is good for younger reads. The illustrations in this book are good. I would use in my class for the younger readers to help them learn to read and learn animals.

Fluffy is such a cute book that anyone would enjoy. It is about a porcupine named Fluffy and everyone makes fun of him because a porcupine should not be named fluffy. He is really sad but in the end he sees that his name is not so bad.

Oh my goodness. So silly, with a nugget of a lesson about loving yourself just as you are, no matter what ridiculous name your parents have saddled you with. Love the facial expressions and body language!

Best book we've read in a long time!! Perfect for a three year old - takes a little maturity to get the humor. Charlie had me read it to him four times in a row!

Hilarious. Only part that falls flat is the rhino's name. Hippo? That's not that funny. If a porcupine is fluffy, a rhino could be tiny or something like that. :)
