I love list books. I have been picking and reading books based on existing list books. I started with 501 and 1001. Then I also tried some titles listed in Pulitzer, Man Booker, Oprah, Guardian, Time 100, Metalist and books by Nobel Prize for Literature laureates so I consult them from time to time too.

Then last month when some GR friends and I were on our way back from a 2-day vacation, I saw this book, 1001 Books for Every Mood by Hallie Ephron, PH. D. I have so many book lists alr More...

I started looking through the book again to see if I could get a rough count of how many of these books I'd read. In the process, I ran across a lot of titles I'd dismissed too hastily on my first trip through. So I made a full second pass through the book and found a lot more books I'd like to try. I think I can bump my rating up to 3 1/2 stars. I suggest you completely ignore the author's four-star rating system. On my second time through, I found that I had been infl More...

I was a little disappointed by this book. I didn't get nearly as many new books to read as I thought I'd get out of it. I had either already read them, they were already on my to-read list, or they just didn't sound like my cup of tea. I really liked the concept of this book though and I think it'd be a nice gift to add to a young-adult/teenage person's library. Ephron offers a nice mixture of fiction and non-fiction, well-known and unheard-of titles, and tries to limit one book per author. Ther More...

I didn't have high expectations for this book, mainly because these compilation/recommendation books never seem to deliver the goods. This book, however, delivers the goods.

The author (who is a librarian) recommends the books based on different categories (books to make you laugh, cry, grieve, scare, etc), but she also gives you other criteria to judge the book, such as is it provacative? Can it be read in one sitting? (She calls these 'bathroom books'. ;D) What is its literary meri More...

This would be an excellent addition to any Young Adult reader's shelves. Many of the selections are classics and most are geared towards a teen audience, but there are some adult titles mixed in. Not only are the "mood" designations helpful, but each book is marked by a multitude of symbols denoting different features, such as "literary," "quick read," or "influential." This system makes "1001 Books..." great for Reader's Advisory quick refere

I love the idea of matching books to mood -- but I guess I just wasn't overly impressed by the choices. For example, in the category "to be afraid, be very afraid" there is no Stephen King. What!? That's just ludicrous. King is a prolific author whose writing can be placed in many categories, but he's consistently been the world's bogeyman for the past 35 years, delighting in scaring the bejesus out of people. If you're in the mood to be badly frightened, King is your man. To omit him More...

This book would be great to have as a reference at the front door of every library. As a lifelong reader, I went through it and checked off all the books I have read. I was happy to discover that there are lots of books that I haven't read yet and would probably enjoy. My hometown library is tiny and sometimes I feel as if I've read most of the books in there that I would like - not so. Ephron (whom I was lucky enough to meet and have her sign my copy) has done her research. I've got lots t More...

This is an interesting spin on the book lists - recommending by mood rather than by genre or author. It seems a much more accurate reflection of the way I read, though it's not clear whether the book is intended to *evoke* the mood it's in, or whether it's intended to *support* the mood I'm in. Maybe it doesn't matter. But I did think there were too many moods and too few books listed in each mood category. Surely there should be more in "for a good laugh" and fewer in "to tru More...

What are you in the mood for? So asks Hallie Ephron...

Three stars because this guide is a bit uneven. The icons and literary merit system she used were a bit confounding. That said, some of her selections were good ones and I have added them to my "to read" list here on Goodreads.

AND, I enjoyed her factoids:

I don't purchase books too often, but I really liked how this book is arranged and the variety of books described. I am using this as a journal since I have already read so many from the list, and there are still many I would like to read. Like a lighter version of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, book-lovers should own a copy.

My only complaint is that I question Ephron's idea of "literary merit" - I think several of the books she awarded more stars to are no more More...

This book is basically 1001 Books You Should Read Before You Die's little brother. It's just as good, if not a little less descriptive and doesn't span the ages like the aforementioned "big brother" book.

It's still very much enjoyable though if you're looking for a different set of categories of books.

I'm almost finished with it and it only took me a day to go through most of it. Check it out.

One of my best friends gave this to me for Christmas last year, and it has helped me expand my horizons as far as the types of books I read.

Whenever you know you want to read something light, something funny, touching, or even scary, this book offers dozens of titles to scratch that literary itch.

This one is ALWAYS on the nightstand, alongside whatever book I'm reading at the time!

This could be a very good readers' advisory tool, and it's just fun to skim through. It arranges fiction and nonfiction selections under various categories (moods) and then provides a short summary and rating for literary merit for each book. It also uses symbols to designate other features such as whether the book is a page turner, provocative, inspirational, humorous, etc.

This was a really good list of books that the author recommends. I have also read Nancy Pearl's two books with book recommendations, and I think I liked this better. This was quick to read through and I found recommendations that seemed to fit me in every chapter. I probably won't know how good the synopses were until I read some of the books. There were a lot of books I had never heard of, plus some I've read.

A good mix of hi- and lo-brow literature. As an English major though, I would highly recommend Peter Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. It's a what's what of literature divided by century and showcased chronologically.

The criteria to be listed in this book must have been be an Oprah selection and can be found at any Wal-Mart. No interesting, lesser known authors or titles. I had read several of those listed and many were not anything I liked. I beleive almost all of my books I have listed as so bad I wanted to burn it were in here.

A very good resource when you can't find anything you want to read or don't know what you're in the mood for. Not a book that you'll just sit down & read, but it's a good source. It's organized so you can easily find a book you're in the mood for. I own this book and have given it as gifts for fellow booklovers!

I am still using this book as a reference guide ... Love how Hallie gave us her thoughts on so many books for whatever we are in the mood for ... Great book to flip through, tag the pages you like, and go back to again and again! Thanks, Hallie!

This book was fun to flip through and I plan to add quite a few of the books to my "to read" pile. There was a major problem with editing though-I spotted tons of typos and there were also a few errors to names of characters in books as well as the events that took place in a few books. Obviously I haven't read all 1001 books so who knows what other facts were wrong.

Fun to browse but many titles are very predictable and found mentioned in other RA sources. I think the Nancy Pearl's Book Lust series is better.

not at all what I expected. It really just listed five or six (up to 15) books for any given category. I glanced through this one and then returned it (once I realized it would be of no use to me). The groups here on goodreads are as helpful as this book!! one neat thing and reason for two stars was the key for each entry marking it as literary, easy read, movie, provocative. etc. interesting although I did not agree will some of the more objective categories.

I would suggest giving More...

I thought that listing books by mood, rather than genre or subject matter, was an interesting concept. I didn't always agree with the author's ratings on literary merit, but I got some great ideas on books to read.
