I had just returned from a vacation that criss-crossed much of the same territory described by Lummis, which gave me perspective on how far it was from A to B, the terrain he was seeing, and the towns he visited.

This man was phenomenally strong and hardy to do some of the things he would do, like falling chest-deep into cold mountain water in the early springtime and still managing to clamber up the side of a mountain just for the view. His narrative is all about doing, not so much about recall
